drawing lessons, learn drawing

People like to express themselves artistically and yet many fail to understand that this kind of artistic skill require learning and practicing. And many do not spend time developing and cultivating it. Very few people are born with the gift to draw well. Therefore, through learning how to draw simple and complicated subjects and to explore with pencil on paper, we would come to know what is lines, shapes, forms, proportion, perspective, shading, compositions and other art elements in a more satisfactory manner. We would be able to enjoy the joy of visual self-expression.
Drawing lessons could be one of the wonderful gifts that we could give to ourselves. It is especially more valuable for those who wish to draw and to develop their artistic interest but never know how and never had the opportunity.
One participant of my drawing session told me that her power of concentration improves after taking drawing lessons. Another told me that she has found a good way to creatively relax her mind. Another said her worries and problems temporarily go away when she start doing sketching and explore the still life. One said he experienced many rewarding moments during the practise and enjoyed satisfaction seeing his skill progressed. One said she never thought she could did it and now enjoy the surprise and admiration of friends. Yet another said it is a form of creative active meditation that is great for his mind. Another said he is happy that he had learned many things from me...
It is for sure that with proper guidance and personal dedication and diligent practice, learning and doing sketching and drawing (as well as painting) enrich and enhance our life.
Drawings on the left, from top to bottom are made by Andrea, Jen, Vina and Joanna. They are participants of the drawing sessions with me.

This painting is painted by Patrina Wong. She titled this painting "Swan Lake". Patrina started this painting at last week's painting session with reference to one of my painting and she departed from there, she completed the painting at this week's session. I love this designed landscape painting and the memories that brings. I enjoy looking at the painting because I feel that the painting is full of life and movement and I love the colours, space, weather and mood. I am happy to see that the visual elements and suggestion of trees, far away mountains, water reflections and the interesting hints of swans enjoying on the surface of the water, all that have been translated into artistic visual plane that gives a feeling of freedom bliss, joy and happiness.

I have started this painting many years ago and now I realized that my memory failed me to remember which year exactly it was, likely it was before 2000. I found this uncompleted painting recently and I decided to work on it rather than to leave it there untouched. I re-touched on almost every part of the surface except keeping the position of the small house. Finally this painting is done.

painting, Chinese Temple. Phor Kark See Temple, Buddhist Temple, Singapore art
I found this study in a drawer this morning while looking for some other things. This is one of the study works I did in the 80's. At that time, I had an opportunity to stay at Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Temple Monastery for a few days attending a retreat. It was a very beautiful and peaceful experience to stay there.
I had painted an oil painting during that time. Below is the painting. It was sold to some one during my first one-man art exhibition in 1987. I had not seen the painting since then. I hope the painting still survive.
Below another study of the painting. I have yet to figure our where I kept it.

It could be quite a task to sketch an open box and a pear for those who does not know how to "see" and "record" in making sketches. Not only that, if one also has to take care of the proportion, perspective and its relation to any other object besides it, that could make the job even more challenging. It would be more challenging if one has to add tones to it or to show light and shadow of the objects. Even more challenging it would be if one has to make a painting in respond to what one sees and to use art elements and to include one's emotions and feeling and personal experience for that.
Sometime, when working on a task like that one may look fine outwardly but deep inside one's cool surface there is some burning emotions, sense of difficulties and curiosity. Usually timely encouragement and support is needed. With this thoughts in mind I made this memorial artwork in which the sense of uncertain happening and uneasy experience are presented by exaggerating the obscure definition of the lines, colours, simply written words and the unpolished finish on the surface.
