The big painting on the wall is High Land Bliss. I enjoy the colours and I could feel the air and space that are generated by the visual effects of the painting.

My cat

,

It was a raining day. My wife, my nephew and I were walking toward the traffic light crossing. We heard cat meowing loudly when we were about to cross the road so we looked for the sound to find out where it came from.

We saw a small kitten moving toward and meowing its way to take shelter under a vehicle. The cat was just few inches infont of the rear wheel of the second vehicle waiting at the traffic light junction. It was real dangerous for the kitten! It could be fatal! If the vehicle would move forward, the kitten would die! I quickly signaled the vehicle driver not to move his vehicle and told him that a kitten was underneath his vehicle and I wanted to take it out. I warmed him not to move his vehicle otherwise my hand and the kitten would be in trouble.

It was a small kitten, may be about 3 weeks old only. I carried the kitten across the road and placed it under a bush near the pedestrian’s path. The kitten still meowing and it followed pedestrian’s footsteps. A child was so frightened that he ran away with his umbrella when he saw the kitten. A young lady felt disgusting and she avoided the kitten by walking very fast. The kitten then followed an old woman who carried a basket, obviously she came back from the morning market. What surprised me was that she used her umbrella to push the kitten away from her. She felt most unhappy that the kitten followed her.

At that time, my nephew was with me. He came from Malaysia to stay with us for 2 weeks in Singapore during his school holiday. He was about 14 years old. He said to me: “Uncle Jimmy, how about we bring it home and take care of it for some time, until it grows older then you let it goes his way.” I was very appreciative to my nephew’s suggestion and I felt ashamed for not having that kind thought in the first place. I went to take up the kitten again so to bring it home this time. The old woman looked at me and she still felt unhappy about the kitten.

The kitten was wet and shivering in my hands. I was sure it felt cold, hungry and restless. I looked at it from head to tail carefully. I found it had a funny design of black spots on his white hairy face and body. I found the black spots were not positioned in a very balance manner visually. However I accepted it totally because I felt it needed care and protection in this very beginning of his life.

At home, I cleaned and dried the kitten and placed it on a new towel. My nephew and my wife found a box to serve as its temporary home. The kitten did not like the box much but it liked to hide behind my paintings that were leaned again the wall. It preferred the small space in between the canvas and the wall. My wife made some milk for the kitten. It meowed while it was taking the milk. It did not allow anyone to go near the little bowl of milk. Later, we fed it with fish and it also made noise when it was eating. It was very offensive and alert when eating.

Next morning, I bought the kitten to a Vet. This is the first time I visited animal clinic. The Vet came out from her office to greet me at the reception area when she heard that I came to see her. She was once taking art lessons at the Federation of Art Societies Singapore where I conducted drawings and paintings lessons for two years. She directed me to her office and after we had chatted a while, she began to check the kitten.

She checked the cat's eyes, ears, mouth, legs, paws and the body. She told me she found no abnormality with the cat. She assured me that the kitten is fine. She shared with me knowledge of taking care of kitten, including giving a name to it so it could understand that when we called him. She showed me how to have contact with the cat so it would be friendly to us. She showed me how to train the kitten for his toiletry needs. She gave me a bottle of milk powder for the kitten and some nutrition pills. She asked me to bring it back for an injection about one month’s time.

We called it “Bear Bear”. Bear Bear became a member of our family since then.

Sky Lanterns

, , , ...

Sky lanterns also known as Kongming Lantern. Made of rice paper with a bamboo frame and has a small candle which when lighted it created heats that cause the lantern to rise into the air. In Thailand, people use Sky Lantern for celebrations and other special occassions. I love the simple form of the sky lanterns and its beautiful light effects that rise and float in the sky at night. There is Yi Peng Lantern Festival every year in Thailand.

Oil Painting - Self Portrait

, , , ...

This is an oil painting of Self Portrait painted by me when I was about 18 years old. At that time I studied at Ngee Ann Technical College. I could see from the painting that I used palette knife for the painting and I also used brush to draw lines on the canvas. I took up some art lessons of oil painting from my secondary school art teacher in year 1972. I also learned from other art teachers at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1973. This is one of the early oil paintings that I practiced privately at home in 1974. I am glad that the painting still survived today. It was painted on a self-primed stretched canvas. The overall condition of the painting is still good. I could see that my passion for art was strong when I was young. My love for art has grown with me since then until today.

Resolved the not resolved

, ,

Many times, when I look at paintings that I did not know how to resolve it years ago, I could very quickly have a solution now. So I know it is because that my experiences have grown and my skills have improved. Then, either I would act on it, to resolve it and to start working on it, or I would do nothing and let the painting be what it was.

For this piece, I decided to work on it again, as I was not fully happy with it last time. I have kept it for years, and I have nearly forgotten it. I worked on it for a while, and sooner than what I expected, I am happy to declare it completed now. Happy to share it with you!

Recent Paintings - Waves

, , , ...

I completed these three paintings recently. I have not painted waves for a long time. I painted my first painting of wave in 1987. It was quite a big painting, it's size is 127 x 122 cm. I exhibited it in my First one-man exhibition. It was acquired by an art lover during the exhibition. I remembered I have taken a photo of him and his family members. Presently, these three paintings are of smaller sizes. one of 8 x 12 inches and two of 8 x 10 inches.

Hope you like them.
