Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay. Acrylic painting by Prabhakara Jimmy Quek. 2012.
I found this study in a drawer this morning while looking for some other things. This is one of the study works I did in the 80's. At that time, I had an opportunity to stay at Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Temple Monastery for a few days attending a retreat. It was a very beautiful and peaceful experience to stay there.
I had painted an oil painting during that time. Below is the painting. It was sold to some one during my first one-man art exhibition in 1987. I had not seen the painting since then. I hope the painting still survive.
Below another study of the painting. I have yet to figure our where I kept it.
However, sometime people still ask me: Do I need to learn how to sketch and draw before I learn to do painting? My answer is yes and no. It depends on what you wish to paint and how you wish to paint it. Hope my following paintings could explain my answer.
Found out this work but I can't remember exactly which year I painted this painting. A silhouetted figure of me watching the formation of clouds in the sky that represent mind. Do feel free to tell me how do you feel about this painting. What comes to your mind and how about suggesting a title for this painting as well. Meanwhile, I simply titled it "Formation" temporary.

The idea of below painting come from seeing two small flowers that my student used it for her painting. The intention of making this painting is to show how I could use common subjects to start a painting and then depart from there using art elements and abstract principles for the painting with personal approaches and feelings for that. Here is the painting: Abstract 1. Acrylic on canvas. By Prabhakara Jimmy Quek.
Please let me know how you like them. Have a nice day!

Painting. 2011 Acrylic on canvas. 102 x 76 cm. By Prabhakara Jimmy Quek. Paintings installed on the walls. The month of August 2011 is quite a special month for Singapore as that there are two national events fall August: 1. National Day on 9 August; and 2. I shall go to vote on the polling day morning and to have painting session with the participants in the afternoon.
I painted this painting as I was inspired by a photo by Adele. I worked out the design with reference to it and then departed form there, for showing my students how to create painting from photos and visual references. Trees, clouds and mountains. Acrylic on canvas panel. By Prabhakara Jimmy Quek.
I started aerial view paintings series since my first participation in "The discovery Art Exhibition" sponsored by Shell Companies in Singapore in 1987. I explained and demonstrated how I do this aerial view painting to a student yesterday, I continued to complete the unfinished painting this morning. Aerial View Painting by Prabhakara Jimmy Quek. I have added words on paintings since 90's. Below two painting are of recent works. Words on the painting are: Asevana ca balanam panditanan ca sevana puja ca pujaneyyanam etam mangala muttamam. Translation: Not to associate with fools, to associate with the wise and to honor those who are worthy of honor. This is the highest blessing. The words are from Mangala Sutta. With Chinese word "Fa" that means Dhamma at the center of the surface of the work.
Words on below painting are: Phutthassa lokadhammehi cittam yassa na kampati asokam virajam khemam etam mangala muttamam. Translation: The mind of a person (an Arahant) who is confronted with worldly conditions does not flutter, is sorrowless, stainless and secure. This is the highest blessing. With Chinese word "Ann" that means secure and safe.
Here are two closed up of a portion of the last image of painting. I painted that painting in 2004. Words are: If you take care of each moment, you will take care of all time. Also, to straighten the crooked, you must do a harder thing, straighten yourself. These words are Buddha's saying.

Sometime I use a different route for working out my painting. When working with this painting, my state of mind is different. Like all state of mind, this state of mind is also of transient nature. It needs to be identified and developed and then transformed it into action.
I have to be fully alert and keep this alertness and creativity spirit with me alive. Start with randomly and haphazardly placement of colour and shape and see the overall visual effects of the work. The painting effect is changing from moment to moment when each stroke or placement of colour is made on the surface. Each attempt changes the visual effect of the painting into a different one.
I work fast so to make marks and strokes on the surface and to mix the colour that I wanted for the surface. From randomly strokes to purposeful strokes. I need concentration, inner mental image, artistic skills, knowledge and experience for that and clear awareness of mind and thoughts.
I have to make many decisions quickly and to make revision again and again. I use various painting techniques and ways of expression that I feel that is correctly expressed what I have in mind. Any marks and strokes of colours on the canvas will change the existing visual effect that I have built earlier.
Transient Phenomena. 2011. Acrylic on canvas. 92 x 92 cm. Prabhakara Jimmy Quek.
Mr Claude was Director of Alliance Francaise de Singapour in 1998. He wrote the above introduction for Jimmy's art catalogue when he had one-man exhibition at Alliance Francaise de Singapour.
I started this painting yesterday. I did a quick demonstration on how I would mix the colours for painting a pear, just to show a participant who took the improver painting session with me. She brought in 3 pears for her still life painting session yesterday. After the quick demonstration, she started to work on her painting. Later, I added another pear on the canvas so to complete the composition. I finally decided to complete the painting. Here is this unexpected arrival of a new painting - 2 pears.

At that time my son was studying at that school and there were many Golden Showers trees planted at a park beside the school. Inspired by the structure of the school building and the Golden Showers trees I painted this painting.

I have many paintings that were recorded in art publications. The latest publication that has two of my paintings printed in it is the Singapore Art Society Artists' Directory 1949-2009. Singapore Art Society was inaugurated in 1949 and it has 60 years of living and history in Singapore.
The President of Singapore Art Society Mr Khor Ean Ghee mentioned in his message that the works in the directory represent the spectrum of artwork in Singapore Art Society (SAS) including Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Ink Painting, Oil, Acrylic, Watercolour, Mix Media, Sculptures and Ceramic. He is hoping that these featured works will encourage the younger generation of artists to exhibit and publish their works, and also help to promote the culture and appreciation of art in the country.
In the photo, the open page of the Singapore Art Society Artists' Directory 1949-2009, two of my paintings are printed on page 123. I am happy that the printing quality of the directory is quite well done. There are 234 selected works in full colour by 117 of the SAS members are featured in this directory. Other art publications shown in the above photo are: Singapore Artists Speak, Change - 20 Singapore artists - A decade of their works, Singapore Art Society Artists' Directory and Nanyang 70 Years After - A Reunion of Artists in the Academy. I believe that one could find these books at reference section of Singapore National Library.
I started this painting sometimes ago but I felt that I was not able to resolve the lower portion of painting, so I put it one side. I took it out to solve the visual problems that I had earlier and I had resolved it this morning. I am pleased to share it with the world. You are welcome to tell me how you feel about this painting, I hope to hear from you.

Door Handle. 2010. Acrylic on canvas. 6 x 6 inches. By Jimmy Quek Prabhakara. All Rights Reserved. I told my mother that I have painted a painting that has a door handle on it. She came over to my place just to see this painting.
She looked at it and she started talking and showing funning face to the painting. I was surprised to see that. I thought it was because there is a design of lion head on the door handle in the painting. She told me she purposely come to see my painting of door handle.
My mother told me she had a door handle something like that on her house's door in China when she was a child. It was already there when she was born. She played with the door handle at home and liked to talk to it when coming home or leaving home. That door handle greeted her at her door day in day out. She said hello and bye bye to the door handle when she was a child. The door handle had a feature of an animal face that had eyes, nose and month, so she talked to it and touched it and play with it when she was a little girl. She said she had not seen her door handle since she was 12 years old as she left her home for Hong Kong. My mother told me all that in front of my painting this afternoon.
Painting has a power to make people recall their memory and share experiences.
You know what, my mother said bye bye to the Lion Head (the door handle on my painting) like saying to an old friend before she left my place.
I started this painting on 14 February, it was the first day of the Chinese New Year in Singapore. We have many tangerines (Mandarin Oranges) at home, so I painted this painting.

I came to know about Snakes and Ladders board game when I was in primary school. One can easily buy this game set from a bookshop or toyshop. I enjoyed playing this game when I was a child. but latter, when I grown older, I felt that this game lacks challenging and needs no playing skill, but still I liked the design of the game board, because it was colourful and it had pictures of snakes and ladders printed on the game board. Still it was nice and fun to play with younger children.
I painted these paintings with the idea of Snakes and Ladders game board in mind. I created my own game board in the painting. I enjoyed the concept of Snakes and Ladders of moving upward and falling downward. I felt it symbolizes good and bad situations or favorable and unfavorable conditions in life.
Recently, I came to know that Snakes and Ladders was originated in India as a game based on morality and that it has some degrees of similarity with what I have in mind when I painted the paintings.
