Here is another painting painted by me. The sea is a little busy. Hope you enjoy this one too. Coastal Romance. Acrylic on canvas panel. 7 x 9 inches. By Prabhakara Jimmy Quek. All Rights Reserved.
Garima has started working on her new paintings. She wanted to paint Buddha Face. I told her I had never painted painting of Buddha Face before. She suggested me to paint one in near future. She hopes her paintings would inspire me to paint one.
This photo I took when Pauline was having painting session with me at my studio. She had painted with me for several months. She loved my paintings and she was happy to learn from me and came to understand the way to approach the layering of painting. She became our friends. We enjoyed the time together discussing ways of approaches to painting. She has to go to other country where her husband works. My wife and I miss her. Wherever she is, we wish her well and happy always. We wish her making progress in her art. Our best wishes to her and her family.
I painted a series of paintings inspired by Dhamma talks given by Sayadaw U Pandita. He talk about constructing Dhamma Pagoda in our heart. In ancient times, the Myanmar people had a great penchant for constructing pagodas. There were many pagodas in Myanmar, something like more than four million pagodas in Myanmar. Sayadaw urged yogis to build Dhamma pagodas, to establish the Buddha-Dhamma in their hearts. He said that the Dhamma pagodas that they are helping to construct are needed everywhere. They need to be built in every human heart. More could be found here.

Celebration with Change. Acrylic on canvas. 120 x 100 cm. By Prabhakara Jimmy Quek.
This morning while I was looking for a few paintings in my painting store, I found a portfolio folder. I have forgotten this folder and out of curiosity I took it out so to see what's in it.
I found some Chinese paintings in the folder. These Chinese paintings were painted by me more than 30 years ago when I was a student. These paintings brought me many memories. I painted this cat painting. The cat was one of the two cats that I had at that time. I used to play with them.
I still love this simple artwork. I like the simplicity of the composition of this painting and the minimum use of the ink and brusch strokes.
When learning traditional Chinese painting at that time, I began with copying paintings that my teacher had demostrated to me. I practiced it many times so to learn the controlling of brush strokes and inks.
This birds painting was an example, it was just purely an exercise of copying practise. Whenever I think of Chinese painting, I feel thankful to my teacher Tan Seng Yong for his kindness to teach me painting. May my teacher be blessed and be well and happy.
Below, a painting that I painted in year 1973. I used Chinese ink on rice paper to experiment with the abstract composition of my classmate's dog. This painting was not painted in traditional Chinese painting style, of course.
I am delighted to show you one exciting painting that I have recently completed. I displayed it on my wall. I am happy that the painting has been reserved by an art lover. It will go to the art lover's home soon.

I am happy to meet Sayadaw Pannathami at my home this afternoon. He came with an attendant. I edited a short video of an One Day Meditation Retreat for him upon his request. Below short video is the edited version to share it with you.
The Panditarama Sydney Meditation Centre (PSMC) was established in February 2000. Currently Sayadaw U Pannathami is the abbot of the meditation centre. He has been a Buddhist monk and teaching mediation globally for over 20 years. This meditation centre in Sydney was formed for the elderly people to meditate anytime nearby and also for working people to meditate on the weekends. The centre also accepts meditators worldwide and provide them with food and lodging free of charge in addition to lectures on Vipassana meditation. PSMC warmly welcome any Dhamma friends, Buddhist or non-Buddhist who want to experience the Dhamma. The centre’s aim is to promote the teaching of Theravada Buddhism particularly the practice of Satipatthana Vipassana meditation in the tradition of Mahasi Sayadaw (Satipatthana Vipassana) of Burma. It is a non-profit organisation.
I donated this acrylic painting as a form of support to PSMC. I feel that it is a lovely painting and I hope it will go to a loving home of an art lover in Sydney soon. Kindly contact Panditarama Sydney Meditation Centre (PSMC) for acquisition of this painting.

A friend retuned some books to me last week. One of the books was an art book: Change 20 Singapore Artists, A Decade Of Their Work. This book had been with my friends for the last 5 years.
This is a 240 page coffee-table edition featured 220 full colour plates and 21 colour portraits of the Singapore Artists. They are Teo Eng Seng, Ng Eng Teng, Thomas Yeo, Yeo Siak Goon, One Kim Seng, Ng Yak Whee, Wan Soon Kam, Prabhakara Jimmy Quek (myself), Teng Nee Cheong, Siew Hock Meng, Low Puay Hua, Leo Hee-Tong, Ghoo Keng Kwang, Lee Boon Wang, Kuan Soong, Lee Hock Moh, Tay Bak Koi, Tan Choh Tee, Foo Chee San and Ang Ah Tee. (A photo of the art book printed with my paintings.)
This book was at that time an exciting volume documented the above mentioned 20 selected artists in Singapore, the book traced their development and it offered rare insight into their creative output of remarkable diversity of styles and media which was best represented the Singapore art scene in 1991.
I had a few good browses of the book since the day it was returned to me. The aerial view painting featured there reminded me of my aerial view paintings that I had painted late 80's and early 90's. Aerial View was one of the subject I loved to create at that time. (One of my Aerial View paintings titled Golden Land 1995 was collected by the Singapore Art Museum.)
I felt that I still love painting Aerial View in my heart. So without delay I worked on two small 8" x 8" empty canvases that I had. I enjoyed the play of colours that creating space and depth on the surface of the paintings. Below a photo of the paintings that I have painted this week. Aerial View 1 & 2. 2009. Acrylic on canvas. 8 x 8 inches. By Jimmy Quek Prabhakara.
Three of my paintings had been acquired and installed at Singapore Embassidor Residence in Manila early this year. This is one of the ways promoting Singapore artist and his art works in other country by Singapore Government. Here, a photo of one of the 3 paintings, I took this photo when the painting was still with me.
Morning Meditation. Acrylic on canvas. 102 x 76 cm. Coll: Ministry collection.
I painted this painting in year 2003 when I thought of working out a painting with Bodhi Tree, with a mood of calm, serenity and peaceful effects. I visited Bodhigaya in India, where there was a big Bodhi Tree. It was a serene and peaceful morning. People meditated arround the Bodhi Tree. People believe that the Buddha attained his enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree at this place. I though it would be a good idea to paint a painting that comes from this memory. I did a small sketch study before I started working on this painting. I hope to achieve a calm and peaceful effects with pictorial elements of tree, a silhouette of pagoda behind the tree, silhouettes of people meditating in this painting.

Yesterday, I was very happy to see an original painting that it has left me for more than 11 years. This painting was painted in 1995 and very soon after then, it was acquired by a gallery and it was later sold to the present art lover and collector. I am happy to meet the collector too. I was told that the painting has been with them for more 11 years. They enjoy and love the painting very much. When I look at the the painting I found that it was very clean and as it was newly painted. They did not change my original frame too. They have taken good care of the painting that I appreciated that very much. I have an opportunity to take a photo of this painting and posted it in my website for record. I am happy to see Sayadaw U Pannathami again and to meet his brother on 12 December 2008 afternoon. I told Sayadaw Pannathami that I had been looking high and low for a painting that my customer inquired but I could not find it. I had no impression that it was sold before. Sayadaw Pannathami told me "Phutthassa lokadhammehi, cittam yassa na kampati, asokam, virajam, khemam, etam mangalam uttamam." The translation of it would be "Touched by worldly conditions, mind yet not shaken, sorrowless, stainless, safe, this is the highest blessing."
I have been looking high and low for three paintings that my customer inquired. The paintings were painted in 1996 to 1999, about 10 years ago. I thought I could easily find them, but it was not the case. At first I could not find two of them. Later I found out one more, because the actual size of the second painting was smaller than the size specification, it was my mistake. I still could not find the third painting. I knew that painting very well. I had a strong impression because of its strong colours and composition. I asked my self many times, Where? Where? Where? Where has it gone?
In the process of looking for the paintings, I found out few paintings that I had forgotten them if I did not see them. Jere is one of them. Most likely I painted it in 2005 or 2006. I hope you enjoy this painting.
