My family and I were at the Sri Lankaramaya Buddhist Temple on Sunday for the Kathina Ceremony. This ceremony is held annually by Sri Lankaramaya at the end of the Vas (Rainy Retreat). During the Vas period, the bhikkhus remain at one place and devote themselves to spiritual and mental development. They also use this opportunity to teach the Dhamma to lay devotees. The monks who spent the Vas in a particular place are entitled to participate in a Kathina Ceremony in which they receive a gift of cloth from the lay devotees. This cloth is then bestowed on one of the members of the Sangha and as a group, they will make the cloth into a robe within the day itself.
