As we look at the rate of growth of a religion through the variety of new adherents in a given time-frame, than we also have to know the actual data, and the formulae to discover the rate of growth. Growth may be measured by a number of factors; high birth rate, conversion, immigration plus the sized the existing followers on which the expansion calculation is situated. Therefore a small group could have large converts, thereby showing a top 'growth percentage' however, not necessarily the numbers of converts.

Overall surveys conducted by official and semi-official, also private organizations all over the world, offer the contention that one religion has witnessed the greatest increase in its followers over the past decade, by a few measures, and that is Islam.
Around 2000, the largest religions of the world were; Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. While Christians constructed the greatest percentage of the planet population or about 32% of world population, the pace was declining. Second largest was Islam at 22%, or around 1.4 Billion of the people of the world and growing. While other religions, as well as atheists, showed no noticeable alteration of the numbers of their adherents. Although a reasonable estimate can be found, however, no accurate details are available for the actual number of followers of either religions in the world, or even the total world population for that matter.
The quickest development of Islam in the last few years has occurred in the largest predominantly Muslim countries around the globe, such as: Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran and Egypt as a result of high birth rates there. In Europe and North America, the massive influx of immigrants of Muslims has led to the top percentage rate increase in the amount of those who claim Islam as his or her religion. Since the Christian along with other religions see a decline in their growth rate in america for example, immigrant Muslims, along with new converts to Islam from Christian and other faiths has led to Islam showing the fastest rate of growth and a number of people who call themselves Muslims.

According to author Samuel Huffington, the overall population of Christians on the planet has been declining considering that the 1980s, because of the low birth rate amongst Christian populated regions of the world, and can stabilize around 25% by year 2025. On the other hand, because of high birth rate, and increasing number of new converts, Islam will surpass Christianity because the dominant religion through the same year, making up 30% with the total population on the planet.
From the data provided by U.S. Center for World Mission the expansion of Islam at 2.9%, is higher than the growth of the world population at 2.6% per year, greater than any other religion, thereby Islam as a religion is likely to grow and spread faster than every other religion. With all the migration of Muslims to Europe, U.S, Canada, Australia, as well as China, the Muslim population could eventually take almost all in these places, which is already evident by growing amounts of mosque, Islamic centers, schools, and businesses which exclusively appeal to Muslim customers - for food, clothing, books and Islamic literature.
