Anybody that watches women's tennis can not fail to notice the advances in game over the last 30 years or so.
Women seem to be a lot stronger and faster in the sport lately. Here is my opinion of who I think are the top 7 players since 1980 in women's tennis, in reverse order.
7. Venus Williams, one half of the famous Williams sisters, Venus has got a remarkable record of Grand slams under her belt, including her wins at Wimbledon, but it is mainly her rivalry with sister Selena that always has people on the edge of their seats.
6. Justine Henin; before retiring at her peak Justine had the match of anybody on the courts, her battles with the both of the Williams sisters were awesome. Luckily for us Justine has just started her comeback. If she can get back to the standard that she once attained then we are in for a treat.
5. Monica Seles, Monica was an awesome prospect, and after winning 9 Grand slams at an early age she was tipped to become one of the all time great women players; but after she was stabbed in an incident, Monica failed to reproduce her best Tennis, and subsequently seems to have faded from the spotlight.
4. Chris Evert, Chris enjoyed much of her success in the early Eighties as well as the late Seventies, but after winning 18 Grand slams she is definitely one of my top four candidates.
3. Serena Williams. Serena is the battling younger sister of Venus and has won quite a few Grand slams of her own, she is awesome on the court at the moment and it certainly takes a lot to beat her.
2. Martina Navratilova: a long and distinguished career gives Martina the proud record of 18 grand slams to her name, as well as many other major triumphs, Martina just seemed to be around forever.
1. Steffi Graf. Steffi just has to be recognized as the number 1 player in the women's game. With an awesome display of tennis, Steffi has managed an amazing 22 grand slams in her glorious career.
