Pam In China

Adopting Parent/English Teacher/1st blog finding Xiao Qing

Short Nesting, Quick Flight

In the midst of all the hustle and bustle of Miao Miao's arrival, we've had another fly the nest. Her stay with us was short and she immediately found her way into our hearts. She was with us a little over a month. Her name is Zheng Nu, now Emma Nu.

We'll be meeting with her new parents in the next few days and I'm sure I'll get some more pictures. Here she is in her new ear muffs. Her special need is deaf/mute. Her special talent...she's the winner of the most Dora Memory Games played at Swallow's Nest!!!

Best Jiaozi in Town!

As you turn the corner walking from You Ai Lu to Tong Bai Lu, you'll pass the Jiaozi Shoppe. They make noodles and other dishes, but the best is the jiaozi (Chinese dumplings). You get 10 jiaozi for 3 yuan. It's a family run business.

Jiaozi comes boiled, fried, but the best is steamed. They do it in these bamboo straw baskets. Interesting, when I first came to China, I hated jiaozi. Not anymore!!!

More White Stuff and a Girlfriend for Frosty!!

This is the view from our 19th story office apartment in Zhengzhou. It snowed all day yesterday and into the night. We have two families traveling from the USA this weekend to China to adopt children. Our airport closes for hardly anything, so I hope they don't get stranded in Beijing or Hong Kong.

I stayed in all day, but Clay and Xiao Qing ventured out and discovered a girlfriend for Frosty.

The White Stuff!!!

It's been snowing every morning here for several days, but today, already at 1:00 pm it's still snowing. Yea!! Xiao Qing and I are pretending we're snowed in, even though we could get out if we wanted.
Thursday, we made the trek across town to visit some fostering parents. One of our joys is to visit and evaluate the growth and development of the children. First, we walked quite a ways, then caught a taxi, then took the bus, then took a motor cabie, then walked some more and finally arrived. I took pictures all along the way.
The street cleaners impressed me more than anything. Don't think you'd see this is the USA!!!!

While Clay watched for the bus, Xiao Qing and I played in the snow.

Clay's the hooded shorter man. Dressed for winter, he's difficult to spot as a foreigner.

After an hour, going through town, we arrive and caught this motorbike cabie. The driver was wonderful and had to stop about six times and ask directions in order to find the correct house.

Meanwhile, Xiao Qing enjoyed the inside decor and the bumpy ride.

We had a great visit with the foster family of Fu Zi Yue and Du Fu Yuan. Interesting thing happen, in the hustle and bustle of leaving, getting boots, coats and gloves on everyone, I left my purse and cell phone there. Didn't miss them till the morning, so I went back and made the trek all over again. At least now I can find their home without the motor cabie ride.

Sleeping Beauty!!

I don't usually post twice in one day, but the babies are still sleeping and My Opera is working, both at the same time, WOW! I'm going to take advantage of it!

Fu Jun Jia (jun jun for short)loves to sleep with his hat pulled down over his eyes. He usually does it himself, which scares me. But, so far, he has never pulled it down over his nose, I check him constantly. If you pull it back up, he wakes up and moves it right back down again.

He reminds me of one of those old 50's or 60's movie stars with blind folds over their eyes. He wears a cap to help his ears not stick out too much:)

Jun Jia has a heart problem. We're not exactly sure the exact diagnosis. When he was hospitalized for three weeks, because of the RSV virus, the doctors told us we needed to get him surgery immediately. They mentioned Tetrology of Fallot.

We made some contacts with other foreigners who do the same thing as us, and sent his EKG and chest xray to Dr. Li in Hangzhou. He suggested we have him evaluated by a heart doctor and bring him to Hangzhou when he is eight months old.

His surgery is already funded by the St. Joseph's School in Penn. (thanks MaryAnn) and by a donor in Texas. This donor in Texas, we have no idea who he or she is....but from their name they appear to be Chinese.....Sir or Madame.....if you read this blog, please know we are very grateful and very amazed.

(I felt the office had made a mistake....you know, added too many zeros or something:) I stand (or sit in this case) amazed in the PRESENCE....!!!!!

Martha White, Ms. Butterworth, and Me!!!

This was the best Christmas ever, if you gauge Christmas by how many packages you get. One contained some Martha White Blueberry Muffin Mix. It was sent by Debbie Miller, an email friend, I have never met, but Clay did when he was stateside. Thanks, Deb!

I don't have an oven, so I thought, I'd try making blueberry pancakes. It worked great. I still had some Ms. Butterworth's syrup left over from a year ago, when Darlene Bowling visited. Thanks Darlene (don't think she knows I have a blog though).

The other packages are Martha White's chocolate chip muffin mix and some lemon poppy seed. I just can't imagine pancakes with the other packages, but we'll try it anyway!!

Who?

I was sitting at M's drinking some coffee, letting the kids enjoy the play area, when a lady comes up to me and tells me I taught her daughter. The daughter is standing next to her, but I can't remember either one of them.

Clay is great when confronted with this type of thing. He just keeps talking and doesn't mention any names....just keeps talking....which is his best attribute to mankind......

Me,on the other hand, must KNOW, who it is......it drives me crazy....so I usually make a fool out of myself and ask.....Hey, at least I get answers!

After many questions, I recognized the mother. She worked in Gong Yi for the Family Planning Department. I taught her daughter when she was four and a half years old. I gave her the English name of "Willa" because of a lady on the APC Yahoo group with that name, and I liked it.

I didn't do a very good job of teaching this child, or she's forgotten everything. When I ask her in English, how old she was now........she said "Fine"!!!!

Another Flies the Nest

Ai Guo came to Swallow's Nest in the Spring and she's leaving in the dead of winter. She's eight years old and deserves all the happiness that awaits her in the USA with her new family.

She lived with us until October and then moved in with Ruth, my translator. Ruth is really feeling the loss, so please remember her. Fostering is a very rewarding work, but can break your heart at the same time. Ai Guo was Ruth's first foster child.

Ai Guo and her new father visited us last night. All the children went to M's to play. Then returned to play some more at the house. Here Ai Guo is playing around with a scarf used in a traditional western Chinese dance.

The first photo is Ai Guo when she first saw Zheng Lin again. She loves babies and was such a good helper when she stayed with us.

I believe in short good byes, so I hugged her and kissed her on the cheek, in the middle of play time. I really feel, in my heart, that I will see her again, since her new family nears where my son teaches in KY.

Ai Guo (Sarah Joy) we wish you the best in your new life.

Last photo is Kent, new dad (who has already adopted three other children from China and has one bio daughter), Clay and the older girls now living at Swallow's Nest...Zheng Nu, Wu Mei, Xiao Qing, and Ai Guo.....

Flowered Throne Part 2

Here's the full picture. The best thing about this toilet is that it actually flushes. Anyone familiar with Chinese plumbing will understand that statement.

I also love the water pressure in the shower, and lots of hot water, yea!!!

Uhmmm!!! Maybe that's why the toilet flushes so well, good water pressure.

Here's a few more pics, not a mansion, but its warm.

Flowered Throne Part 1

Tonight, I said 'good bye' to our Riverhouse Medical School Home. There were many good memories at that house, but, on to a new job, new experiences, and new challenges.

Our new school is called "Henan Institute of Engineering". The apt. is on the 5th floor and is just a wee bit larger than our old one. The best thing is the toilet. Here is a glimpse!
