Every year, near the Fourth of July, the Smithsonian Institute
in Washington, DC puts on a Folklife Festival on the National Mall. The festivities include
music, dance, crafts, food, and interactive displays. Each year, one region or subculture in
the US and one country abroad are featured. In 2003, they were Mali and Appalachia.
