Raise Your Hand...

...if you agree with this woman:

And then answer me this: Who is going to pay for it?

True story: I went down to the local YMCA to apply for membership. Along with the membership application, they handed me a "scholarship" application. This allows for lower income families to join at a discounted price. I figured "what the hell?" and filled out both. After all, we are a one income family, and as stated before, I am a cheapskate  Along with the applications, I had to give them copies of my bills (to prove I didn't lie about my income and expenditures). I handed over the stack of bills, and the woman at the desk made copies. This is where it gets interesting. She looks them over while she's making copies, and says "I don't miss these! I had a stack bigger than this right before I declared bankruptcy--I had to do it...I just couldn't keep up anymore." I humored her attempt at small talk, and agreed that bills suck, especially in the winter. She replied, "Help is on the way, though...help is on the way!" All the while she was looking up like her savior Obama is gonna save the day, and somehow reverse her fucked up credit from filing bankruptcy. Nice lady, I mean, I feel kinda bad making fun of her, but seriously? C'mon now.

I came to two conclusions about this (and many other conversations exactly like this that I have heard since the election):

1. People are going to just stop working. The are excited about the "spreading of the wealth" and figure they no longer need to work, since Bill Gates, celebrities, and CEOs will be forking over their share for the "common good."

2. People HONESTLY believe that Barack Obama will be paying for their gas, mortgages, etc.

Both scenarios scare the shit outta me. Anyways, I think by now you all know I did NOT vote for Obama. I am hoping for the best, but don't have high expectations. Only time will tell, I guess.

Heh. Sounds like you have to tough it out amongst the Zombies.
Cofoffyplop was calling him Barcode O'bummer! Heh. Not been in office 5 mins.
Nice to see you around, sorry my blog hasn't any laughs - unless you can laugh at the Human condition..
:O)

pauliticalmind 11. November 2008, 00:31

Oh, don't get me wrong, I DO hope he is as great as people say he will be. I think some are going a little overboard though in their expectations. I'm not anticipating puppies and rainbows for the masses. I am by no means upper class, but I hope that if I am someday, I will be able to keep all that I have earned. I will always refuse to be a host to lazy parasites, unless we are in some sort of symbiotic relationship. Right now, the ghettos across the tracks that are living on welfare are offering NOTHING to society except more mouths to feed, and more violence on the streets. Meanwhile, McDonalds, Old Navy, Borders, YMCA, ALDI, Meijer, Kroger, etc. all have "Help Wanted" signs in their windows.

53north 11. November 2008, 00:51

Wow. You kinda feel for them when there's no work -
people doing it here because there's no incentive with low wage and high taxes.
I got 20 unsociable hrs with 30hrs pay - looking for more if I see it's half worth it.

Angeliki 11. November 2008, 01:25

at this point not even Barack knows what to fix first...
the only time that we can see progress it is when we are optimistic and work all together,
not using videos with African Americans will take the stereotype away too,
I am white with green eyes does that make me eligible for more job opportunities ??? hmmmmmmmmmm it did in the past ......
I am sure the last picture is not eight years old or more ...

still a great post Paula,
a great one for conversation ,thinking and respecting each others opinions...
I am raising my hand just to say "hello" and because I just shaved my arm pits

Ripp 11. November 2008, 06:00

:eyes: about time you shaved that thing!!!

This is a very good post and one of the most interesting points but the one that 99% of the people do not want to answer. Where is the money going to come from??????????

Easy answer. Tax big business and give it to the lower class. OK, big business is taxed. Good job, now what?

Yep, big business raises it prices to make a profit again... Damn, lets pass that on to the middle size business because they are making good money also. Now what?

Yep, middle size is going to raise its prices also. DO we notice a trend??

Bottom line, lower class has less money because the prices for everything are higher... You may pay less tax but you will still pay...

Thanks frankie, for posting this.

Angeliki 11. November 2008, 06:15

"about time you shaved that thing!!!"

what thing ??? p:

you never told me it bothered you!

pauliticalmind 11. November 2008, 13:47

Frankie

and Angeliki, thanks for shaving. Although, I guess no matter what I'd have to introduce you as my "European" friend :D

Anna 11. November 2008, 13:49

If people truly believe that just because there will be taxes and some attempt to change the welfare system - which won't happen over night, for sure - or whatever, then they're truly mad! No system is perfect, it's still people in general who have to make it work P: One man sure can't change the economy for the entire US, president or not

Angeliki 11. November 2008, 16:55

I very often go "Brazilian" too Paula!!!
I sure do
ouch!

Eric 11. November 2008, 18:01

Good to know you're not a 70's kind of gal

Angeliki 11. November 2008, 18:09

I was very young in the 70's
no chance for a "70's" experience because of young age
now the 80s it is another story! big hair and clothing to be killed for!

Charlie 11. November 2008, 19:28

OK, there's two parts to this statement. (1) It's a proud moment & (2) I won't have to worry about putting gas in my car. I agree with the proud moment for the obvious reasons & the historical ones. Now the part about not having to worry about "putting gas in my car". That's what you call SAFETY AND SECURITY. Obama is a security blanket for this country. Whatever trouble people have gotten into, Obama can shine a light for them to get out. THEMSELVES.

Obama isn't going to send her or anyone else a $50 gas card or whatever. He's going to make sure that whatever help is needed along the way, that's the kind of help he's gonna provide. That doesn't mean we're all gonna quit our jobs on Jan 20th and have Obama pay for everything. THAT'S LUDICROUS! And, if you're not careful, you're gonna start sounding like these right-wing nuts yelling out "SOCIALIST!", "COMMUNIST!"... like those nuts that were at the McCain rallies. We will not become a welfare nation. But you can't pull yourself up by the bootstraps if you don't know where the straps are. Step lightly, Paula. You're too intelligent and rational to be the cute psycho chick that no one wants to be around. Just because we haven't really heard from Ann Coulter in a while doesn't mean we're itchin' to either.

pauliticalmind 11. November 2008, 19:47

To me, this is the same as talking about 'change,' but not offering any tangible solutions. Tell me HOW he is a security blanket. Tell me HOW he is going to help. I'm not trying to step on any toes, or come off as a "right-wing nut," I'm just trying to understand what the actions behind the words will be. As for the socialism comment, don't get me started. Here is an excerpt from the definition of socialism as seen on wiki:

"Socialists mainly share the belief that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital and creates an unequal society. All socialists advocate the creation of an egalitarian society, in which wealth and power are distributed more evenly, although there is considerable disagreement among socialists over how, and to what extent this could be achieved."

Tell me how Obama's plans are NOT socialistic.

Bev 12. November 2008, 01:36

Excellent Post.

Ripp 13. November 2008, 05:33

Hondo, the US is already a welfare nation...

Charlie 13. November 2008, 14:21

Ok. If we're a welfare nation, who's fault is that? The ones asking for the "handout" or the ones GIVING the handouts?

Ripp 13. November 2008, 15:40

Actually, I could go on and on and on with blame etc... But in short I strongly believe it is the parents of the ones asking for the handout and it is our general "woe is me, pitty my existance" attitude. That just reinforces the point that we are in for a rude awakening in the next 10-30 years. If anyone thinks that one person will change it they are simply blind. We are in the downward spiral of ""Our" American society". This election was not the first step but it is a contributing factor to it. Just watch and see.

A society will cease to function properly when the masses are in control. Welfare masses is where we are headed... How in the world are the welfare masses going to make our government function correctly if they cannot even get a fucking job for themselves. How in the world are we going to prosper when everything is done for the ones who are lazy, worthless, etc...

Pretty much sums up our next president and the future of the US. I am moving to some third world country where people still understand the meaning of hard work. will I be able to get a wireless connection for my laptop at starbucks? Homer: Doh!

Charlie 13. November 2008, 16:21

Awwww, it's a damn shame that you're not gonna stick around America to help make it a better country by fighting the corporate criminals that have fleeced this nation almost of its very soul. Your pessimism & your defeatist attitude will be missed.

OK. We know about the lazy and the worthless ones, to HELL with them. What about the ones that got just plain, ol' fashioned SCREWED?! How about we focus on the ones that need help getting back WHAT THEY ALREADY HAD and let the other fools fend for themselves.

This election was about someone...ANYONE... with an idea. George W. Bush is already in Crawford, TX in his head. There's nothing he'd rather do more than get back there as fast as he could... SHIT! Right NOW if he could. Dubya, as it turns out, is a bigger defeatist than you are  The entire administration has taken "lame-duck session" to an entirely different level. The bailout, the auto crisis, President-Elect Obama and the members of Congress are the only ones talking about solutions, which is pretty f'n sad since, the last I heard of, George W. Bush is still PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

You're a man. Be a REAL man, come up with REAL solutions.

Angeliki 13. November 2008, 18:45

"

I voted for Obama and I can tell you as a single mother I sure know what hard work is!
when I see members with multiple cars in their garages and four bedroom houses post on poverty day that they live in poverty, members that wanted McCain and not Barack,
I just step back and I say,
"it is not who you voted for,"
it is what your attitude is and how you were raised....
maybe it is the immigrant in me,
I find Americans not having a bank account but eating out, not having money to pay their kids' school trip but buying fake plastic nails to wear,
they blame the people on welfare as Democrats,
but suprice !!
they are on line to get their food coupons too!
(I think you get them in person, I never got public assistance I might be wrong on this).
As for being negative about the next President before he starts his Presidency,
is it a Republican positive thinking???
hmmmmmmmm that will take us far!

Ripp 13. November 2008, 20:51

I am simply being honest. The problem is NOT the "few" that have just become "needy"... It is the growing mentality that is affecting far too many of the hard working citizens of this country. "oh, they are just overworked and exploited" blah blah blah... Nope not buying it and neither should you or anyone else.

If you think that this growing mentality isnt happening you are simply not seeing the whole picture. It has a little to do with the president but more to do with what our society has or are becoming. Those underlying issues need to be resolved before one man or 1,000,000 men or women can make a difference. The bullshit sense of entitlement that a seriously growing percentage of the low income families have, an even larger growing percentage of the middle class families have etc... That is the growing factor that is starting to cripple this society and will continue to do so in the near future. Do you think this has evolved over the last 8 years? If so, then again you are simply not seeing the entire picture and that is just a cop out and a way to point fingers.

Far too many parents rely on a broken system to educate their children, they reply on a broken system to pass work ethic, values and character onto their children, and as the years pass the next generation becomes worse and worse. The generations are simply following the example their parents set before them. A majority of the people have a mentality that is just to exist and to be "normal"... Lord knows we should not expect anything special from our children because we wouldnt want to upset them. The ones who strive to be the very best at anything are within the lower .0001% of the population. They are ostrasized for wanting to be great at something. Now with 90+% thinking it is ok just to walk through life half assing it. THIS IS THE PROBLEM... as this contributes to the overall mentality of our society. This mentality is actually being handed to children and they are learning it is ok... It is NOT!

The bailout etc... are all after effects of these larger issues in our society's mentality. A false sense of entitlement with decreasing levels of work ethic, values and integrity.

Until parents, school, and our government start really stressing how importance the work ethics, expectations, etc...then nothing will change and WE will continue to be in this downward spiral.

Sure there are the rare examples of greatness; but, do you really think we can continue to live off 1 - 10 peoples shoe strings? That is just not going to happen anymore. Especially when the "very few" are being crippled by the same lazy mentality of the many. Its a downward spiral that might be impossible to change at this point.

The hard working Ellins or our society are becoming fewer and fewer as the years go by. This is not on a small scale but a massive scale and within years we will be past the turn around point. The democraps, the repubics, religion, government cannot solve these problem as a majority of them are the problem. It will only be solved after the worse has come and people understand what is worth fighting for.

As for my "pessimism & your defeatist attitude" being missed; LOL, I am sure it will be. At the same time, I am sure that no one will notice because they only care about themselves, getting theirs, and what is best for them "right now"... However, trust me when I say I do HOPE that I am wrong on this one... I would be the first to stand in line to say I am wrong... Nothing would make me more proud...

Ok, well I have to go mouch some food from a bum accross the street before my class... That is paid for off government funding.... Thanks guys.

Angeliki 13. November 2008, 21:54

Thank you Ripp,
I do see the whole picture and I am glad you see it too.
It frustrates me when people have rent assistance/food assistance but they also have Netflex/cable/Internet.
At the same time the claim to be Republicans or Democrats, or they post about "teir own" poverty...
They are a lazy group that their political believes are totally twisted and unimportant to me! If I see them up at 5:30am every morning going to work ,supporting their family, having no debt ,be proud of what they accomplish then, I will listen to their ideas "for their kind of change ".
I will copy and paste your comment in my note pad, it is so much you, the real you and the man that I got to respect and be proud of,
enjoy you lunch !

pauliticalmind 13. November 2008, 22:21
