Barack in the USSA

, , , , , ,

I've been repeatedly questioned about why I think Barack Obama's policies are socialistic. This is the most straight-forward response I can think of, so if you can't at least partially agree with me after reading this, there's something wrong with either your eyesight, or your reading comprehension. Below, I will compare the platforms of the Socialist Party of the United States and Barack Obama. Each position will be numbered to make the comparison easier to follow.

Socialist Party USA:

1. We support the right of any number of interested workers in a workplace to form a union with no limits on the subjects upon which employees and unions may bargain with employers.

2. We support the right of public sector workers to strike.

3. We call for a minimum wage of $15 per hour, indexed to the cost of living.

4. We demand the immediate withdrawal of the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), and oppose the creation of a widened Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).

5. We support a program of massive federal investment in both urban and rural areas for infrastructure reconstruction and economic development.

6. We call for an international treaty outlawing all weapons of mass destruction, including the use of depleted uranium in conventional weapons.

7. We are committed to confronting the heterosexism that provides the fertile ground for homophobic violence, and support all efforts toward fostering understanding and cooperation among persons and groups of differing sexual orientations.

8. We strongly support affirmative action, civil rights, and anti-discrimination laws and programs to end institutional racism

9. We oppose the privatization of the Social Security system and the use of Social Security trust funds for any other purpose, such as offsetting the federal deficit.

10. We demand full support for every woman's right to choose when, if, and how to have children, including the right to free abortion on demand at any stage of pregnancy, without interference or coercion. Clinics providing abortion services must have the full protection of the law.

11. We call for organizational structure based on mutual consideration and respect, rotating leadership, gender balance, and processes that welcome and enable open and equitable participation in discussion and decision-making.

12. We support a national health program with full standard and alternative medical, dental, vision, and mental health coverage for all, publicly funded through progressive taxation and controlled by democratically elected assemblies of health care workers and patients. The National Health Program should extend, and replace, Medicare and Medicaid.

13. We call for an end to home foreclosures

14. We call for the "unconditional disarmament" by the United States.

15. We call for a "steeply graduated" tax policy to redistribute wealth.

Barack Obama:

1. Ensure Freedom to Unionize: Obama and Biden believe that workers should have the freedom to choose whether to join a union without harassment or intimidation from their employers.

2. Protect Striking Workers: Obama and Biden support the right of workers to bargain collectively and strike if necessary. They will work to ban the permanent replacement of striking workers, so workers can stand up for themselves without worrying about losing their livelihoods.

3. Raise the Minimum Wage: Barack Obama and Joe Biden will raise the minimum wage, index it to inflation and increase the Earned Income Tax Credit to make sure that full-time workers earn a living wage that allows them to raise their families and pay for basic needs.

4. Amend the North American Free Trade Agreement: Obama and Biden believe that NAFTA and its potential were oversold to the American people. They will work with the leaders of Canada and Mexico to fix NAFTA so that it works for American workers.

5. Create a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank: Barack Obama and Joe Biden will address the infrastructure challenge by creating a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank to expand and enhance, not supplant, existing federal transportation investments. This independent entity will be directed to invest in our nation’s most challenging transportation infrastructure needs. The Bank will receive an infusion of federal money, $60 billion over 10 years, to provide financing to transportation infrastructure projects across the nation. These projects will create up to two million new direct and indirect jobs and stimulate approximately $35 billion per year in new economic activity.

6. Toward a Nuclear Free World: Obama and Biden will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons, and pursue it. Obama and Biden will always maintain a strong deterrent as long as nuclear weapons exist. Butthey will take several steps down the long road toward eliminating nuclear weapons. They will stop the development of new nuclear weapons; work with Russia to take U.S. and Russian ballistic missiles off hair trigger alert; seek dramatic reductions in U.S. and Russian stockpiles of nuclear weapons and material; and set a goal to expand the U.S.-Russian ban on intermediate- range missiles so that the agreement is global.

7. Obama and Biden will strengthen federal hate crimes legislation, expand hate crimes protection by passing the Matthew Shepard Act, and reinvigorate enforcement at the Department of Justice's Criminal Section.

8. # Keep the promise of equal pay for an equal day's work. (Aug 2008)
# Apply affirmative action to poor white college applicants. (Apr 2008)
# Legalized discrimination meant blacks could not amass wealth. (Mar 2008)
# Fight job discrimination to give women equal footing at jobs. (Feb 2008)
# Remove discriminatory barriers to the right to vote. (Feb 2008)
# Benefited from affirmative action but overcame via merit. (Dec 2007)
# Include class-based affirmative action with race-based. (Oct 2007)
# Better enforce women's pay equity via Equal Pay Act. (Aug 2007)
# Blacks should infiltrate mainstream to affect change. (Aug 2007)
# Commitment to diversity by CEOs is advisable. (Mar 2007)
# African-Americans vote Democratic because of issue stances. (Jul 2004)
# Supports affirmative action in colleges and government. (Jul 1998)

9. Obama and Biden are strongly opposed to privatizing Social Security.

10. Supports a Woman's Right to Choose:
Barack Obama understands that abortion is a divisive issue, and respects those who disagree with him. However, he has been a consistent champion of reproductive choice and will make preserving women's rights under Roe v. Wade a priority as President. He opposes any constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's decision in that case.

11. As president, Obama will continue to promote paycheck equity and close the wage gap between men and women.

12. Provide Universal Health Care and Lower Health Costs: Barack Obama and Joe Biden are committed to signing universal health legislation by the end of their first term in office that ensures all Americans have high-quality, affordable health care coverage.

13. Combat Mortgage Fraud and Subprime Loans: Barack Obama and Joe Biden believe we must establish stiff penalties to deter fraud and protect consumers against abusive lending practices. Obama introduced the STOP FRAUD Act, which would increase funding for federal law enforcement programs, create new criminal penalties for mortgage professionals found guilty of fraud, and require industry insiders to report suspicious activity. In March 2007, Obama urged Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to bring together lenders, consumer advocates, federal regulators and housing agencies for a summit meeting on preserving home ownership. The bill also provides counseling to homeowners and tenants to avoid foreclosures. As president, Obama will continue to fight to ensure more Americans can achieve and protect the dream of home ownership.

14. Obama has promised to dramatically reduce defense spending.

15. Obama has promised to increase the tax burden on the rich to redistribute wealth to the poor.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Need I go on? While not all of the policies are EXACTLY the same (which would make sense, seeing that Obama ran as a Democrat and not a Socialist), there are a LOT of similarities. In a Capitalistic society, individual prosperity and achievement are rewarded. In a Socialistic society, equity is the goal, and average is good enough, because government will take care of the rest. While America will not become Socialistic overnight, these policies set the tone for a gradual shift from Capitalism to a nation of government controlled mediocrity.

I am not a "right-wing nut," but I will call a spade a spade. Nor am I some "psycho chick" that would "yell out 'FIRE' in a crowded theater." I also am not "one of those lucky Americans making more than 250K/yr." However, you should still be "honored to be graced by my presence." For those of you who are totally confused by now, everything in quotes was pm'd to me simply because I called Obama's policies socialistic. I won't name names--you know who ya are

“One of the consequences of such notions as "entitlements" is that people who have contributed nothing to society feel that society owes them something, apparently just for being nice enough to grace us with their presence.” ~Thomas Sowell

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.” ~Winston Churchill

I think you did a great job presenting that.

Phantom2 12. November 2008, 21:24

This should be on an Op-Ed Page in a major Newspaper!

Well stated!

53north 12. November 2008, 22:28

I can see alot of strange manouvering in there that only USA minds are capable of.
I guess Obummer's going to go with alot of "'BLACK'" popularist policies. (there, I said the B word). Like getting FEMA into a wrecked city within 6hrs of a catastrophe. Upping min wage slightly so folks can breathe out...etc.
Nostradamus saw the B's & W's uniting.

ripp2002 13. November 2008, 05:28

Great job Biff!!!

jga1000 13. November 2008, 17:54

as always ....well put.send it out to DC..kiss

maddysman2003 13. November 2008, 20:31

That was the most convincing documentation of this that I have seen. Too bad his blind followers would censor you before they tried to comprehend it. They do not have a clue what they just put in the White House.

I too am tired of being politically correct and will continue to speak my mind. While I may offend some of my regular viewers, I am not going to paint the next 4 years peachy as the liberal media will.

Great job!!!

FoxM 14. November 2008, 19:42

I personally do not find anything wrong with socialism, although I do not consider myself a socialist.

I despise capitalism, though, and therefor... I think there is no option for me but being anarchosocialist. I like taking turns to act as a sort of executive-officer-for-the-week-- But all the decisions *of* that officer 'ave to be ratified at a special bi-weekly meeting-- By a simple majority, in the case of purely internal affairs-- But by a two-thirds majority, in the case of more major affair...

Besides... What's wrong with mixing an extremely capitalist economy with more balanced social politics? It is like a Martini (shaken, not stirred)

As Saramago said once: "It is economic power that determines political power, and governments become the political functionaries of economic power."

maddysman2003 14. November 2008, 22:51

I am a beer person myself. But if you look back in American history, the times of prosperity were when government was smaller. Less regulation and the free market was allowed to work.

The idea of shared management is great, but there are people I would not trust managing a bathroom stall.

FoxM 15. November 2008, 02:17

I cannot look back to NORTHAmerican history because I have always been living in their backyard. My own history has taught me that there has ever been a government, or proper regulations. But I agree... shared management is a difficult thing to do... that's why it is the proper way. Nothing in life comes easy.

Hahahaha... no.. sorry... That popped out of my head without thinking. I have to review that and see if I am right or wrong...

However, I got so fed up with what northamericans would call the 'right-wing' that there are not many more options but to become anarchist.

LorenzoCelsi 16. November 2008, 20:00

The point is Obama can't be worse than Bush.
And McCain did not have any chance of another republican president after such a disaster.

FoxM 16. November 2008, 20:24

 completely agree with lorenzo.

In fact, there was no other choice than Obama

pauliticalmind 16. November 2008, 20:37

There were lots of other choices (see HERE). And I disagree...I don't think America has seen its worst. Just an everyday cynic, hoping for the best, but inserting reality into my daydreams

ripp2002 16. November 2008, 20:57

:eyes: sadly, I agree with Biff, we are far from seeing the worse Homer: Doh! the good part is the rest of the world will be feeling it also.

You all know us Americans love to share...

LorenzoCelsi 16. November 2008, 21:05

From here it can't be worse than 5 years of useless war and a major economical breakdown, plus a wide array of nonsense like the missiles in Poland to provoke Russia and escalate another cold war.
Of course an asteroid can wipe out any life form from earth but I would not blame Obama for it.

ripp2002 16. November 2008, 21:08

:eyes: Why not??? the assssteroid would most likely be from the shit flying out of his mouth...

I am just :irked: by the whole thing. I have to walk past 10000 cops almost daily now because that jackass wanted his office 2 blocks from my school. The nerve.... Closed sidewalks, people selling crappy OBlama cheap garbage, and I actually think the price at the donut shop went UP. :irked: I cannot afford my blueberry cake donuts anymore awww

LorenzoCelsi 16. November 2008, 21:25

Well considering american history there are chances somebody will shoot him down. Wikipedia says that over 42-43 people, there have been 20 attempts to assassinate presidents and presidents-elect so far. 4 resulted in deaths and 2 in wounded. Plus there are 2 suspect deaths.

@Phantom2, believe me nobody outside US finds the situation "hilarious". You don't feel like laughing much with you have a clown with his finger on the doomsday button.

Phantom2 16. November 2008, 21:27

I think it a bit hilarious how people from foreign countries so easily criticise America and it's leaders.

Maybe Americans should re-think our foreign aid, defense pacts that keep you safe and trade agreements, all of which are American tax payer funded!
You get yourselves into jams (wars, famines, disasters etc.) it's Americans that always bails you out.

Europe is standing in a pool of gasoline with people dancing around you with matches, who ya going to call when this blows up in your face and totalitarianism returns?

Phantom2 16. November 2008, 21:40

Our "many clowns" we have had with their finger on the button have managed to keep your butt free though. Right?

LorenzoCelsi 16. November 2008, 21:48

Well if with "free" you mean my country is still under military occupation by american armed forces since the end of WWII then yes, they have managed to keep us free.

But yet I don't laugh at the idea the american president can produce FAKE evidences (the famous iraqi WMD) to start a never ending war in which all the "allies" are involved, willing or not, because he says God told him to do so. And I don't like the idea of having Russia pointing his weapons at us while we are desperately trying to make them a partner for the EU.

Phantom2 16. November 2008, 22:06

Russia in the EU.... Great move. Let the fox in the hen house!

And the fake evidence you speak of was complied by International Intelligence sources and we went in with the blessings of the U.N. This is old stuff. You just believe what you want to believe, damn the facts.

We really don't want to be there, but we didn't want to take algebra in school either! I guess it's the whole dictator and opression thing that we have a problem with. Silly Us!

But I think the women in Iraq who can know vote and the little girls who can go to school for the first time, and the little boys who don't get thrown in prison for the sins of their father and.....nuff said.

LorenzoCelsi 16. November 2008, 22:18

It is old stuff because once Iraq and Afghanistan had been occupied by US army in 10 minutes, despite the FAKE propaganda about the mighty enemy forces, then the US military and politics did not have any plan about what to do next. I would call it "incompetence". And they haven't figured it out yet actually, the Americans are just hanging there waiting for a sign from above. Meanwhile years have passed.

I also remember that US made fun of ONU inspectors who said there weren't any WMD in Iraq, basically saying the same they say about europeans, the communist pussies who don't want to fight the "war on terror".

You don't know anything about Iraq. Otherwise you would be aware that Americans can't pull out because if they do the place becomes another middle east nightmare, way worse than what it was under the Saddam's regime. About Afghanistan, things over there are going more or less the same as when it was occupied by the soviets back in the '80s, NATO forces entrenched in fortified bases and 99% of the place is indian country. An huge success after all these years.

About Russia, besides the fact that russian girls are pretty, my house is currently heated with russian gas. The EU needs russia as commercial partner but one day we wake up with US missiles installed in Poland with the excuse to defend Europe from the WMD Iran is piling up. This sounds a little mickey mouse but I would be upset if I could not buy gas from Russia to stay warm in winter...

FoxM 16. November 2008, 22:26

When will northamericans understand that they are NOT the messiah of the world? We can manage pretty well without them, thank you. The price we are paying for their 'aids' and their trade 'agreements' is not really fair, but... there is no point in argue how many countries have troops in northamerican soil, and how many countries do not have northamerican troops in their soil.

Phantom2 16. November 2008, 22:42

Iraq...remains to be scene. Maybe a civil war is on the horizon. My friends sons and daughters who have spent time over their believe different. I tend to believe someone who's been there over someone who's info is just repeated from television networks and reporters who refuses to report anything positive that happens in the world.

As far as Afghanistan....we are much more technically advance than the Soviets were in the 80's. We can hit truck from 1700 miles away if we have a spotter on the ground. We don't need to "occupy" a territory to accomplish a task.

We aren't a country who conquers and occupies, we free them and remain to defend if they ask. We have bases in your country with your many governments blessings (61 different ones I think since WWII ) .....are you under our thumb. I think not!

FoxM 16. November 2008, 22:45

You think awfully wrong.

Phantom2 16. November 2008, 22:51

Good. That's good!

ripp2002 16. November 2008, 23:10

:eyes: I walk outside to drink a beer, finish a paper and wow the whole world is at war once again...

Sadly, 70% of the shit that is read and reported in media sources around the world is 90% incorrect.

I am amazed about how easily people say they do not need the aid America provides. I think it would be great it we just stopped giving it. I am sure after a few disasters people would cry for help.

With that being said. Yes, the aid comes with strings attached... Nothing in the world is free. NOTHING!!!

Well except the opinions of everyone here.

FoxM 17. November 2008, 01:09

Yes... unfortunately 90% of the media is wrong, that's why we do not need their help. Unless you could use some of that help to help people in I don't know... New Orleans, maybe? pleople who after 1 year of the hurricane, should still live in churches and infrahuman conditions. Like Jeremy Clarkson said once: "How could people in America sleep at night knowing how bad it is down there?"

If they treat their own people like that, I cannot immagine how do they treat other people... ohh.. wait. I do know, I happen to live in the 48th US territory. I am a worthly human being!!!

Phantom2 17. November 2008, 01:59

Why don't you come to New Orleans and look for yourself! That's were I am.
You are sadly mistaken. And don't believe the media did anything to help anybody down hear, but caused more confusion and chaos!

BTW...Jeremy Clarkson has never set foot in New Orleans! How would he know?

ripp2002 17. November 2008, 02:47

Sadly, the media wants to call attention to anything that will make a profit for it... that is all. The exploit information for profit. There is no if ands or butts about it FoxM, if you do not see that then you are in a sad state of mind.

As for New Orleans. The amazing thing is that there were some cases of some really fucked up stuff. On the other hand it is a city with what one of the top 3-4 highest rates of poverty and unemployment in the entire country (this is prior to the hurricane)... I knew quite a few people who moved from New Orleans to NC to work for my contractor company. They were without work for maybe 2-3 weeks before they got their shit together.... How the fuck is it taking others 2-3 years?

Wake up!!!

The only excuse they have anymore is lack of heart within themselves...

Phantom is there; he seems like he is doing quite fine...

ripp2002 17. November 2008, 02:47

Hey Phantom, speaking of that how are the titties on Bourban street? I was thinking of taking a trip in February...

Phantom2 17. November 2008, 02:57

 Big and bouncy...and the beer is cheap...come on down

ripp2002 17. November 2008, 03:07

:eyes: sweet!!!

I shall see about planning the trip next week.

LorenzoCelsi 17. November 2008, 10:07

I don't expect things to be different, each nation gets the leaders it deserves, so I suppose Bush and his administration are what lots of Americans want and like.

Maybe you could read some milblog, those written by american soldiers on the ground, like this one:
http://funwithhandgrenades.blogspot.com/2008/10/state-of-iraq.html
or this one:
http://kbrsecurity.blogspot.com/2008/11/happy-veterans-day.html

About Afghanistan, the problem is the same as Vietnam, having a goal that makes sense and that can be achieved. Back then the Americans thought to be fighting the communists while they were actually fighting people who wanted their independence. About the "technology" it makes no difference because NATO is not in control of 90% of the territory and this happens despite the taliban and other groups are not currenly armed by some big brother like US did when it was the turn of the soviets. Because, you know, Rambo fought alongside the afghan "freedom fighters". I wonder what would happpen if Russia or China or whoatever else start sending modern weapons and money to the talibans like did lovely CIA in the '80s.

53north 20. November 2008, 00:05

What happened to Paula's blog!?
Everybody scram back to their slabs.

maddysman2003 20. November 2008, 21:24

I noticed that too 53north, seems like complete entries on here, not just comments. I do find it amusing that foreign countries are supporting the new administration. That should tell us something.

ekehog 30. November 2008, 20:35

Nice job! Even if I have no illusions on USA getting socialist. A little more decent hopefully. And maybe a little more openminded.

TheLoneRead 9. December 2008, 02:29

You did do a very good job of presenting your ideas. I guess I just have a hard time seeing whats so bad about it all.

kozack 25. December 2008, 22:48

You just perfectly worded what I was thinking for a long time!

pauliticalmind 29. December 2008, 15:19

@kozack: glad you liked it  thanks for stopping by!
