Agua - Water (Esp-Eng)

, , , ...

Water

Today I've been reading about the great problem of the water. According to the information, most of the important lakes in size of the world, are disappearing. People have to walk enormous distances to get some few liters, and many times, of bad quality.

I thought that in Uruguay we enjoy drinkable water in the whole territory. It is simply to turn on a faucet and to drink (a little complicated in summer, for the temperature). But, to have that available abundance sometimes makes us forget the graveness of the status. Every time that we leave open the faucet while we rinse or we wash the dish, or we wash ourselves the face or the teeth, we are wasting heaps of water that many don't have the luxury of possessing. I don't like to be extremist, neither sensationalist, neither carried to an extreme in the things that I do and I say, but I simply realize every day that passes the reality of this situation. And myself is conscient that I waste a lot of water per day.

However, for a time, even our country that has a very important fluvial network whose rivers cross great part of the territory, so we use mainly the currents of the rivers to generate electricity, it has felt the effects of the lack of water. This weekend the lack of rains plus to the intense heat, provoked the first great fire in the coast, relatively near from my city. For about three days the firemen and the army had to combat the fire.
The earth is very dry, the plantations, I have a friend that has fields near Colonia, and he told me that their pantations are ruining. All this in a country like ours that the water is one of our natural main "goods." To complicate the things, it is predicted that there won't be important rains but until January.

When one is faced directly to an extreme, or simply direct status, it is when we realize the graveness of a situation. In this case it is global and makes me feel pain when I see we are putting at risk all our resources.

Some facts:
- The lake Chad, in Africa was a reference for the astronauts, from the space. At the present time, due to practical insistent of watering, their surface has decreased 95%.
- Of all the water of the planet (more than 70%), just 2.5% is capable for usage. Of this2.5%, 99% is in glaciers and underground waters, what leaves us 1% available for world usage, both for human beings as all the alive other beings.

Will Earth sustain future generations?

, ,

After some studies of some ecosystems, a group of scholars and some environmental leaders made a report. Their conclusion is, in part, the following: "During the past half century, the growing demand for food, freshwater, timber, fiber and fuel, has caused unprecedented changes in earth's ecosystems, straining earth's ability to sustain future generations. Earth's natural ability to pollinate crops, provide air conditioning by wild plants, and recycle nutrients by the oceans is being overtaxed. The planett is also at the edge of a massive wave of species extintions.
"Humans are damaging the planet at such an unprecedented rate that they are raising the risk of abrupt collapses in nature that could spur disease, deforestation or dead zones in the seas", added a paper from Canada.
The conclution of the report, is that it will require radical changes in the way nature is treated at every level of dicision-making.
The question that most of us may consider is "Will Earth sustain future generations?" How long will survive this beautiful planet?

Time zones

Recently, I made the mistake to think in local time, being connected to Opera. The travel around the world (using Opera in my case), is full of crazy things, and great moments, but I can learn too, and the last thing to learn was that fact: the time is not the same in the world in the same moment smile
Well, thats not a big discovering, but I used to forget it in a chat or sending messages to my friends from USA, United Kingdom, Vietnam, India, and all other places... I could say "good morning" and there is late in the night! So, I want to say sorry if I do it again, but now I'm taking care. There's a program I take all the time with me: Country codes. It gives lots of information from countries in the world, and it helps me to know the real time in different places. The program can be downloaded at http://www.izoxzone.com/
One thing to remember about Uruguay: in summer (and right now) the timezone is changed, from
GMT -3:00 to GMT -2:00. It let us not to waste energy and (the more I like) to be in the beach until 10pm lol
So, to all my friends:
Good morning/afternoon/night!!!!
