حدود 70 درصد کسانی که اقدام به دانلود غیرقانونی می کنند بالای 35 سال سن دارند
نتایج یک نمونه گیری نشان می دهد کسانی که اقدام به دانلود غیرقانونی موسیقی می کنند بطور متوسط در سال بیش از 126 دلار برای خرید قانونی موسیقی هزینه می کنند.
این ارزیابی توسط موسسه مشاور بریتانیایی Demos انجام شده و نشان می دهد رقم صدف شده توسط این افراد حدود 54 دلار بیش از افرادی است که ادعا کرده اند هرگز بصور غیرقانونی موسیقی دانلود نکرده اند.
نتایج این ارزیابی چند روز پس از آن منتشر شده که پیتر مندلسون وزیر بازرگانی بریتانیا اعلام کرد قصد دارد سیاست اخطار و اخراجی سه مرحله ای را برای مقابله با کسانی که بطور غیرقانونی اقدام به دانلود موسیقی می کنند به اجرا درآورد، اما برخی کارشناسان با استناد به نتایج ارزیابی موسسه Demos استدلال می کنند که سیاست مورد نظر پیتر مندلسون عملا مشتریان اصلی صنعت موسیقی را مجازات می کند.
روزنامه ایندیپندنت اخیرا شمار کاربرانی که هر ساله در بریتانیا به طور غیرقانونی به دانلود موسیقی می پردازند را هفت میلیون نفر اعلام کرد که اتحادیه صنعت ضبط و پخش موسقی در بریتانیا (BPI) معتقد است ضرر ناشی از اقدامات این هفت میلیون نفر به بیش از 328 میلیون دلار در سال بالغ می شود.
بر اساس ارزیابی موسسه Demos حدود 10 درصد افراد 16 تا 50 ساله ای که مورد پرسش قرار گرفتند عنوان کردند که در مواردی بطور غیرقانونی موسیقی دانلود کرده اند.
با این حال حدود 80 درصد این افراد گفتند که از جمله سیدی، MP3 یا صفحه (vynil) موسیقی خریده اند.
در این نظر سنجی که به صورت آنلاین انجام شد 1008 فرد بریتانیایی شرکت کردند.
نیمی از شرکت کنندگان در نظرسنجی گفتند که بطور قانونی و از طریق سایت یوتیوب به موسیقی دست یافته اند و حدود 22 درصد هم گفتند که از رادیو های اینترنتی برای شنیدن موسیقی استفاده کرده اند.
البته تنها چهار درصد افراد شرکت کننده در نظر سنجی گفتند که از سایت Napster استفاده می کنن (که در امر به اشتراک گذاشتن موسیقی پیشرو محسوب می شود) و 21 درصد افراد گفتند که حتی نام آنرا نشنیده اند.
حدود 75 درصد از افراد 16 تا 24 ساله برای خرید MP3 ابراز آمادگی کردند که اکثر افراد شرک کننده در نظرسنجی قیمت تقریبی 73 سنت را به عنوان قیمت ناسب برای هر قطعه دانستند و تنها دو درصد افراد گفتند که حاضرند بیش از 1.6 دلار (یک پوند) برای هر قطعه موسیقی خرج کنند.
این در حالی است که آهنگ Fight for this Love از چریل کول، خواننده بریتانیایی که اخیرا در صدر جدول آهنگ های پرفروش قرار گرفته بود با قیمتی تقریبا برابر با یک پوند در آی تیونز و 1.3 دلار (79 پنس) در آمازون به فروش رسید.
پیتر بردول، یک پژوهشگر در موسسه Demos گفت: "سیاستمداران و شرکت های تولید موسیقی باید درک کنند که ذات نحوه مصرف موسیقی (به عنوان یک کالا) تغییر کرده و مصرف کنندگان به دنبال قیمت پایینتر و دسترسی راحت تر به موسیقی هستند."

گوگل در مراسمی در لس آنجلس نحوه کار سرویس جدید را به نمایش گذاشت
شركت گوگل که به خاطر موتو جستجوى پرطرفدار آن شناخته مى شود با ارائه سرويسى براى يافتن و خريد موسيقى بصورت آن لاين، وارد بازار موسيقى شد.
براى رسيدن به اين هدف، اين شركت سرويسى به نام وان باكس (OneBox) را با شراكت سايت هاى موسيقى Lala و سايت iLike كه تحت مالكيت سايت ماى اسپيس قرار دارد، ايجاد کرد و توسعه داد.
اين سرويس كه تنها در آمريكا ارائه خواهد شد به كاربران امكان خواهد داد كه با استفاده از نام آهنگ، هنرمند يا بخش هايى از شعر، به دنبال قطعه مورد نظر خود بگردند و حتى کاربر می تواند برای مطمئن شدن از انطباق حاصل جستجو با موسیقی مورد نظر خود کل قطعه را نیز بشنود.
این در حالی است که اکثر سایت های فروش موسیقی تنها امکان پخش ۳۰ ثانیه از هر قطعه را برای کاربر فراهم می کنند.
مارك موليگان، يك تحليلگر در موسسه پژوهشى Forrester گفت اين سرويس جديد احتمالا جايگزينى جذاب براى اشتراك غيرقانونى فايل هاى موسيقى ايجاد خواهد كرد.
اين تحليلگر در وبلاگى نوشت: "اپل كار چندانى درباره استفاده كاربران دستگاه هاى آى پاد از سايت هايى مانند بيت تورنت (سايت دانلود غيرقانونى) نمى تواند انجام دهد، اما گوگل مى تواند."
او افزود: "فقط تصور كنيد كه وقتى يك كاربر به دنبال يك آهنگ جستجو مى كند، در كنار تمام لينك هاى تورنت كه موتور جستجو به آن باز مى گرداند، يك سرويس ادغام شده قوى از سوى گوگل هم به ارائه همان قطعه مورد جستجو بپردازد."
سرویس جدید گوگل تنها در آمریکا ارائه می شود
با استفاده از اين سرويس، وقتى كاربران به دنبال آهنگى مى گردند ابزارى كه توسط Lala يا iLike توليد شده پدیدار می شود و به كاربر پيشنهاد مى كند كه كل قطعه را براى او بنوازد.
پنجره اى نيز كه توسط سايت MySpace فراهم مى شود به كاربر امكان مى دهد كه نسخه MP3 از آهنگ را را بخرد و همچنين ويدئو كليپ يا اطلاعات ديگر همچون تاريخ و محل برگزارى كنسرت آن هنرمند را نيز در اختيار كاربر قرار مى دهد.
گوگل اعلام كرده است كه عبارات "music" و "lyrics" در ميان ۱۰ عبارتى قرار دارند كه كاربران بيش از ديگر عبارات به دنبال آنها گشته اند.
ماريسا ماير، معاون مديرعامل بخش جستجو در گوگل در مراسم معرفى سرويس جديد كه در لس آنجلس برگزار شد گفت: "در گوگل ما هر روز ميليون ها جستجوى مربوط به موسيقى را مشاهده مى كنيم."
"براى ما واضح است كه موسيقى براى كاربران ما جايى ويژه دارد."
در حال حاضر شركت اپل دربازار موسيقى غالب است و %۷۰ فروش اينترنتى موسيقى در جهان از طريق اين شركت انجام مى شود.
در اروپا شركت هايى همچون Spotify در حال افزايش سهم خود از بازار فروش اينترنتى موسيقى هستند.
اين سرويس پخش مجانى موسيقى كه در سال ۲۰۰۸ آغاز به كار كرد، اكنون در بريتانيا به بيش از دو ميليون نفر خدمات ارائه مى كند و شمار كاربران آن در سراسر اروپا به بيش از شش ميليون نفر مى رسد.
گوگل اميدوار است به موفقيتى مشابه اپل و Spotify دست يابد.
در حال حاضر گوگل در چين به كاربران اجازه مى دهد موسيقى هاى مجاز را دانلود كنند و اعلام كرده است كه در كشورهاى ديگر هم به دنبال شركايى است تا مدل خود را جهانى كند.

محققان از نوجوانان درباره میزان ارتباطات جنسی آنها و نوع موسیقی که گوش می کنند، سوال کرده اند
بنا به تحقیقی در آمریکا، گوش کردن به ترانه های موهن در باره رابطه جنسی ممکن است نوجوانان کم سن و سال را ترغیب کند زودتر سکس داشته باشند.
محققان دانشگاه پیتزبورگ از 711 نوجوان در آمریکا، در باره رفتار جنسی آنها و همچنین نوع موسیقی که گوش می کنند، سوال کردند. آنها متوجه شدند گروهی که دائما به ترانه های موهن جنسی گوش می دهند، دو برابر بقیه احتمال دارد رابطه جنسی برقرار کنند.
اما کارشناسان رفتار جنسی در بریتانیا گفته اند اعلام این که سبک موسیقی با رفتار جنسی فردی که آن را گوش می کند، ارتباط مستقیم دارد، نگاهی ساده اندیشانه است.
گروه تحقیق دانشگاه پیتزبورگ، در این مطالعه، ترانه هایی را موهن دانسته که حاوی توصیف های بی پرده، خشونت آمیز و سلطه جویانه از رابطه جنسی است؛ ترانه هایی که مضمونش، سکس را رفتاری جسمانی و نه ناشی از عشق ترسیم می کند.
محققان حاضر نشده اند که مشخص کنند کدام آهنگ ها در این طبقه بندی قرار می گیرد اما به عباراتی اشاره کرده اند که از خشونت علیه جنس مخالف و همچنین عضو تناسلی او نام می برد (I'm gonna beat that pussy up).
محققان، دواطلبان این مطالعه را که از سیزده تا هجده سال سن داشته اند، به سه گروه تقسیم کردند. آنهایی که به این نوع ترانه ها دائما گوش می کنند (بیش از هفده و نیم ساعت در هفته)، آنهایی که گاهی اوقات گوش می کنند و آنهایی که کمتر به سراغ این دست از ترانه ها می روند (کمتر از دو ساعت و نیم در هفته.)
این مطالعه نشان داد که چهل و پنج درصد از نوجوانانی که دائما به این نوع ترانه ها گوش می دهند سکس داشته اند در حالی که فقط 21 درصد از آنهایی که گاهی به این نوع ترانه ها گوش می دهند، ارتباط جنسی برقرار کرده اند.
دکتر برایان که هدایت این تحقیقات را بر عهده داشته است، گفت: "یقینا میان رفتار نوجوانان و نوع موسیقی که گوش می کنند، ارتباط وجود دارد، اما این که بگوییم که گوش کردن به نوع خاصی از ترانه مستقیما با سکس در سنین کم ارتباط دارد، دشوار است."
او افزود: "با این حال والدین باید این یافته را مد نظر قرار بدهند. والدین نباید با گفتن این که 'خوب بچه اند و این نوع موسیقی ها را دوست دارند' از احتمال تاثیر آن بر رفتار نوجوان چشم پوشی کنند. من نمی گویم که والدین باید جلوی فرزندان نوجوانشان را بگیرند تا به این نوع موسیقی ها گوش نکنند اما باید به آنها در باره ارتباط جنسی توضیح دهند تا نوجوان این نوع ترانه ها را بهتر حلاجی کند."
سخنگوی موسسه خیریه بروک که در زمینه سلامت روابط جنسی جوانان و نوجوانان فعالیت می کند، می گوید: "روشن است که محیط فرهنگی در رفتار جنسی جوانان نقش ایفا می کند اما ساده انگاری است که بگوییم چون یک فرد به این نوع موسیقی گوش می کند، تصمیم خواهد گرفت که زودتر سکس داشته باشد. عوامل مختلفی در این تصمیم گیری دخیل است."
کارشناسان معتقدند که آموزش درست نوجوانان و جوانان در باره ارتباط جنسی بهترین روش برای جلوگیری از رفتارهای پرخطر و نامطلوب جنسی و همچنین پیش از موعد آن، در میان این گروه سنی است.

کوررنگ ها قادر به تمایز رنگ سبز با قرمز نیستند
دانشمندان می گویند به کمک ژن درمانی، یک گام به درمان کوررنگی نزدیک تر شده اند.
تیمی از دانشمندان آمریکایی توانسته اند توانایی تشخیص کامل رنگ را به میمون های بالغی بازگردانند که بدون توانایی تمایز رنگ های قرمز و سبز، متولد شده بودند.
در نشریه Nature تکنیکی که برای این درمان در دانشگاه واشنگتن مورد استفاده قرار گرفته، تشریح شده است.
پژوهشگران می گویند اگر چه هنوز باید مطالعات بیشتری صورت گیرد ولی از همین روش ممکن است برای معالجه افرادی که دچار کوررنگی هستند، استفاده کرد.
متخصصین تا کنون به این فکر نیافتاده بودند که ممکن است مغز افراد را با استفاده از این تکنیک به بازی گرفت.
تا کنون این طور تصور می شد که اضافه کردن اطلاعات حسی تازه ای مانند گیرنده های لازم بصری، برای دیدن کامل رنگ ها را تنها می توان در دوران طفولیت یعنی هنگامیکه مغز شخص بیشترین قابلیت تربیت پذیری را دارد، اضافه کرد.
ولی پروفسور جی نیتس، و تیم همکار او توانستند در سلول های تشخیص دهنده نور در قسمت عقب چشم میمون های نر بالغ، ژن های درمان کننده را قرار دهند.
این ژن ها دارای کد دی ان ای DNA مخصوصی بودند که به وسیله آن سلول های تشخیص دهنده نور می توانستند بین رنگ سبز و قرمز فرق بگذارند. تشخیصی که میمون های نر مورد آزمایش، فاقد آن بودند.
این آزمایش ها نشان دهنده نتیجه بخش بودن ژن درمانی بود و میمون هایی که مورد معالجه قرار گرفته بودند توانستند تمام رنگ ها را به بینند و در روی آزمایش های کامپیوتری بین تصاویر سبز رنگ و قرمز رنگ تفاوت قائل شوند.
معالجه این میمون ها دو سال قبل صورت گرفته ولی از آن هنگام تا کنون توانایی تشخیص رنگ ها توسط این میمون ها همچنان ثابت باقی مانده است.
پروفسور نیتس و همکاران او وضعیت این میمون ها را از نزدیک تحت نظر قرار خواهند داد تا اثرات دراز مدت درمان کوررنگی میمون ها را ارزیابی کنند.
آنها امیدوارند که بتوانند برای معالجه اشخاصی که دچار کوررنگی هستند از همین روش استفاده کنند.
کوررنگی در انسان ها دارای اشکال متفاوت است.
رایج ترین شکل، عدم تمایز بین رنگ سبز و قرمز است که موروثی است و در آن نقصی که در روی کروموزوم ایکس ژن تشخیص رنگ، وجود دارد، به نسل بعد انتقال می یابد.
البته در برخی موارد کوررنگی به دلیل بیماری هایی مانند از بین رفتن تدریجی بینایی چشم در اثر کهولت macular degeneration یا عوارض جانبی داروهاست.

While indie pop darlings like the Shins get all the fame, Matt Pond PA has been turning out albums of equal quality at double the quantity (counting since 2002). Their string-led alt-rock caters to West Coasters who get nostalgic about the East Coast seasons. Or at least that's what it does for us.
Biography :
While living in Philadelphia working as a furniture mover, Matt Pond met cellist Jim Hostetter while moving his furniture. The two struck up a friendship and Hostetter immediately began writing cello arrangements which became the heart of 1998’s limited release Deer Apartments, the band's first full-length. Pond soon began writing and working with engineer Brian McTear whose production and musicianship greatly fleshed out matt pond PA's sound as evidenced by their second full-length, Measure, released in 2000.
matt pond PA greeted 2001 with the I Thought You Were Sleeping EP (File 13) and toured with members of Aspera Ad Astra, Ted Leo, and Very Secretary. By the time the tour ended, the band truly became THE BAND. With Jim Hostetter playing cello and Mike Kennedy (Lefty's Deceiver, Audible) on drums, the rest of the line-up fell into place. Bassist Matt Raisch and guitarist Jim Kehoe and finally cellist Eve Miller (The Rachel's) enlisted soon thereafter.
Less than a year later, the band returned with their fourth full-length, 2002's The Nature of Maps. Although Pond remained the primary singer/songwriter of the group, The Nature of Maps became a more holistic, collaborative project with each band member contributing heavily to the songwriting process. The band toured both nationally and on the East Coast throughout the rest of 2002 and 2003. 2003 wrapped up with Matt and cellist Eve Miller completing a West Coast tour with Eve's other band, Rachels'.
Following a move to New York, Matt Pond formed a new version of matt pond PA with Eve Miller as the only returning member. In 2004 the band recorded their fourth full-length Emblems off of the New York based label Altitude Records.Read more...

نسل سوم آی پاد شافل بالقوه کوچکترین دستگاه پخش موسیقی جهان محسوب می شود
اپل دستگاه پخش موسیقی جدیدی از مجموعه آی پاد "شافل" را به بازار عرضه کرد.
دستگاه جدید می تواند به 14 زبان مختلف نام هنرمند و نام قطعه ای را که کاربر به آن گوش می کند، برای شنونده بیان کند، که دلیل گنجاندن این توانایی در این دستگاه، فقدان صفحه نمایش بر روی مجموعه آی پاد شافل است.
سیستم گویای نام قطعات همچنین می تواند میزان انرژی باقی مانده در باتری دستگاه را نیز به اطلاع مصرف کننده برساند.
این دستگاه که با 46 میلیمتر طول و هشت میلی متر عرض اندازه ای معادل نصف اندازه نسل قبلی آی پاد شافل را دارا است (کوچکتر از یک باتری قلمی AA)، کوچکترین دستگاه از مجموعه آی پاد و بالقوه کوچکترین دستگاه پخش MP3 جهان محسوب می شود و تنها 10.7 گرم وزن دارد.
همچنین برای اولین بار در مجموعه محصولات آی پاد، کلیدهای کنترل، بجای دستگاه پخش کننده، بر روی سیم گوشی قرار داده شده است.
نسل سوم آی پاد شافل که تنها در رنگ های نقره ای و سیاه عرضه می شود می تواند چهار گیگابایت اطلاعات (معادل هزار قطعه موسیقی) را در حافظه خود نگه دارد.
اولین دستگاه ها از مجموعه آی پاد شافل که ساده ترین مجموعه در میان دستگاه های پخش موسیقی اپل به شمار می روند، اولین بار در سال 2005 به بازار عرضه شدند.
هر چند شرکت اپل جزئیات فروش محصولات خود را اعلام نمی کند اما برخی تحلیلگران میزان فروش دستگاه های آی پاد شافل را در سه ماهه آخر سال 2008، که بطور معمول اوج فروش دستگاه های پخش موسیقی اپل در این زمان رخ می دهد،7.5 میلیون دستگاه اعلام کرده اند.
اپل در این مدت 22.7 میلیون دستگاه آی پاد فروخت که میزان فروش دستگاه های آی پاد را از سال 2001 که فروش این دستگاه ها آغاز شد به 200 میلیون رساند.

No, your eyes are not deceiving you and I did not make a typo, Miike Snow really spell their name with two I's, making them possibly the most unGoogleable band of the moment (evidenced here, Illinois you're running a close second). Little is known about these guys other than the fact that they named themselves after Japanese cult film director Takeshi Miike, so their single "Animal" is our only source of info, a relaxed, beach-ready bit of electrolyzed pop that glides through its four-plus minutes on a bed of off-beat keyboard strokes. Our friends at Downtown roped in some great producers to version the tune, and we'll be premiering those over the next couple of weeks, beginning this morning with a refix from Fool's Gold's resident disco-house dude Treasure Fingers. Doing what he does best, TF adds some thick low-end and even more bouncy keys on top, conjuring something that sounds like Kavinsky doing the Buggles.Read more...

Comprised of two dudes on instruments and two ice-princess frontwomen, Liverpool-based Ladytron is quite simply one of the most awesome bands to ever rise up out of electronic music's ashes. Garnering the most attention initially by their cold and calculating club hit "PlayGirl" (spun to death by important electro artists like Felix Da Housecat), the foursome has somehow managed to make their far-away, future-forward sound a warm and inviting experience throughout three albums, and are most intriguing live. If you haven't gotten to know them, start now.

In pop folklore, bands were allowed three LPs to become themselves, yet the fabled third album is an increasing rarity in this low-attention-span epoch. So it comes as a bit of a rare treat to find that Liverpool-based boy / girl four-piece Ladytron have reached this mythical milestone with Witching Hour, their best album yet, and one that still fizzes and sparks with the band's own idiosyncratic charms. Yet Witching Hour, is an album that reaches further than it's predecessors; warm and dense, there is a feeling of susceptible magic wrapped within it's thirteen tracks - Ladytron have finally been allowed the grace to become themselves. It¹s the first to give a truly rounded insight into what Helen Marnie, Mira Aroyo, Daniel Hunt and Reuben Wu, are all about. They can still make music starched and synthetic, but, unlike it's predecessors 604 and Light & Magic, at its core Witching Hour is wild and unstable; a synth-pop record which rages with a new unbridled energy. Their critically lauded 2001 debut 604 album spawned a glut of imitators. Their darker late 2002 release Light & Magic featuring the worldwide cult hit "Seventeen", was toured around the globe for 12 months, selling out coast to coast in the US along the way. Returning home, they started work immediately on their new record, but spent 2004 oscillating wildly while their UK and US record labels imploded, before eventually completing the LP in 2005 for Ryko & Island/Universal. In the interim they travelled, wrote, honed and perfected. From the euro daydreaming of 604, to the Los Angeles recorded Light & Magic, Ladytron¹s output has often been something of a travelogue. But since L&M, their travels have broadened the group beyond the aspirational nature of their earlier work. Tours to Argentina, Brazil and China have added an extra dimension to their influences and a greater awareness of home. There may be shoegazy shades of Young Marble Giants, early Stereolab and the Cocteau Twins within the new album, yet the references remain oblique rather than obvious and it¹s as much their development as a live band as their previous studio albums that informs the feel and swirling atmospheres of Witching Hour. It is the sound of an electronic band rediscovering their leftfield indie roots, experimenting, enlarging their palette of sound. And assisted in their sonic exploration by producer Jim Abbiss (DJ Shadow, Placebo, Kasabian) - sounding all the better for it. The period since their last album has seen them mature from being a group finding their feet with both voices and instruments to a group who have learned to craft a hook drenched pop music that lurches from one trip to another often in the same song. Ladytron have stood their ground in a market saturated with wannabes and also-rans, they have become familiar with every aspect of what they do. Avoidance of the generic, has been crucial all along: "We've never been interested in being a trad. anything," insists Mira. "Everything is done our own way. I've always been into Krautrock bands like Neu! and Can, and I love the fact that I can't really tell what instruments they used. It doesn't really matter." Indeed, the beauty of Witching Hour is not in guessing what instrument made which sound, it is in marvelling at how Ladytron have produced such a striking set of pop songs. The brutal synthdriven, "hedonistic nursery rhyme" "Sugar", the effortless "Destroy Everything You Touch" and "High Rise" are as strident as "Seventeen", but come wreathed in twisted, snarling, intoxicating FX. A synth drenched sensateria, the albums centre-piece is probably "Soft Power" from which the albums title is derived: an overdriven electronic pulse, married with an atmosphere reminiscent of early Kate Bush, its counterpoint "Fighting In Built Up Areas" is the ultimate Bulgarian industrial dance track. There is a production that utilises a forceful dynamic that resonates with the great works of pioneers like Martins Rushent and Hannett. Most acts would kill for a truly muscular, powerful sound, (this album has several) most put their destiny in the hands of people who hardly know them as humans let alone musicians. What ladytron have and what they have achieved here- is a perfect understanding of their influences, where they are coming from and where they want to be. Few of their contemporaries have that grasp of sonic annihilation, that capability to blow your head aside even at the lowest of volumes. Ladytron can do this with ease, that ability comes with having things your own way, so there is nobody to make unreasonable demands of your art. This is the sound of no compromise, spectral, other-worldly music that will reverberate through your head long after tonight is all over. There's a killer ballad, "Beauty Two", a perfect (neo-gothic Northern Soul) pop song, "International Dateline", and even one track, "Last One Standing", which lays claim to a mutated Lee Hazelwood heritage. A similar restlessness and melancholy informs seismic processed rocker "Weekend" - wherein Ladytron seemingly return to a favourite theme; the decadent escapism of the discotheque juxtaposed with a bedsit reality. The tearful, nightmarish tone of the rest of the album is harder to pinpoint. The beautiful "International Dateline" is a case in point. It sashays along on a neo-Northern beat, has hooks to spare, but those words... "Woke up in the evening, to the sound of screaming," sings Helen, sweetly froze in fear. "Through the walls it was bleeding... all over me." Ladytron never explain, but, they recognise that Witching Hour, with its ghosts, eerie imagery and its "daylight is the enemy" proclamations, is their darkest record to date. Even if they don't always know why. Says Mira, smiling wryly, "happy songs never made me happy. A lot of sad songs have" If Witching Hour is dark it is also, more importantly, a deeply emotional experience. "The idea that we're cold and detached," says Helen "couldn't be further from the truth". Album closer "All The Way" is arguably the best thing they have recorded, but such moments are everywhere; a general disquiet, the fraught atmosphere of "International Dateline", the yearning vulnerability of "Beauty Two" or the suppressed anger of "Destroy Everything You Touch" It is serenely beautiful at times and noisy and disturbing at others; just like all the best records should be. This is a collection of songs that will cool you down in the summer and keep you warm in those dark winter months. Ladytron just fulfilled their potential. If you're into sexy alt rock, give East Hundred a spin. Much like the New York group Ivy, lead vocalist Beril Guceri and company have top-40 potential, but their indie integrity keeps them on the cool side of the charts (like CMJ). The single will hook you in, while the rest of the LP will sell you completely.
Biography :
East Hundred began as a basement recording project in 2004 when brothers Brooke and Will Blair (guitars and drums, respectively) invited Beril Guceri, Brooke’s then-girlfriend, to add vocals to their heavily-synthed downtempo tracks. “Of course there were hesitations, in working seriously and creatively with my boyfriend and his brother. Singing leaves you so vulnerable, but it was Brooke’s support that made it comfortable,” Guceri points out. Comfortable may be a relative term: Beril suffered from panic attacks and nearly cancelled their first few shows due to overwhelming stage fright. After recording a few rough demos (which would later become the first EPs), the band sought to solidify its lineup and it was no great surprise when David Sunderland joined on bass. A friend of the Blairs literally since diapers, Sunderland had played in several previous bands with the brothers. “Dave was our only choice.” Susan Gager, another close friend from Philadelphia, joined on keyboards and East Hundred soon evolved into a songwriting democracy.
