Sony, the Japanese famous electronics brand for Vietnamese consumers announced the closure of Sony Vietnam factory by the end of this September. It does not mean local consumers would say goodbye to their famous brand, but await to welcome imported Sony products.
"The Sony factory closure not because of inefficient business, nor the affects from the current economics situation of Vietnam", Sony Vietnam's representative said, insists that the company would like to switch its business to trading rather than production.
After Sony Vietnam closure, Sony will register to set up Sony Electronics Vietnam with trading as the main scope of business. The future Sony Electronics Vietnam will import Sony products from abroad and distribute in the local market.

The factory closure will make 200 staffs unemployed. Sony Vietnam commits "higher compensation" than which requires for lost-job employees by the Labor code of Vietnam.
Sony first established Vietnam Factory in 1994 with USD 6.6 million investment capital for production lines of CRT TV, Radio cassettes, Hi-Fi system...In 1998, Sony was the leader in introducing Flat Trinitron TVs to change the normal CRT TVs to Flat screen model.
The current consumption trend of LCD TV, plus considerable price reduction and promotion campaign makes Vietnamese buyers turn their back to traditional CRT TV, and pull their wallets to more fashionable LCD screens.
Consequently, Sony Vietnam closure is explained by the company representative: "Sony decided to stop production in Vietnam and increase finished goods importation from abroad, to offer the latest and wider range of hi-tech products that cannot be produced in Vietnam".
Though Sony Vietnam is trying to keep producing CRT TVs but the brand cannot extend the production for a longer time because the demand for CRT TVs was going down and more difficulties raising such as lacking of CRT parts from global suppliers.
According to Sony Vietnam, there has not been any relevant announcement for the closure of any factory in the region.
At the time of factory closing, Sony Vietnam possesses investment capital of USD 16.6. The closing is 2 years prior to its license due, which will be expired in 2010.
