Day 2 - Discovering "lunch"

So guys, there we are: The first "real" day at Guadeloupe.

I slept like a baby. The aircon rattled extremly loud, but this was not really a reason to stop me from sleeping after the long day(s). But actually I stopped it at seven just to ensure that the upcoming heat of this day would kick me out of bed fast enough to actually use this day!

As I went into the kitchen to have breakfast, I realized that yesterday evening I agreed to join Vivianne (that's where I live here) and her family at lunch that was organized by a friend of hers. This weirdly meant I had to buy a ticket for 20 euros, but this was because there was also some music. Well, I didn't really know what to expect and with not really beeing able to communicate to anyone here (yet) in sentences consisting of more than 3 words, I just agreed to join them, I mean - this seems to be very traditional and I was quite curios what it actually was. We had breakfast and I decided to go to the beach before we would drive to the lunch at 12.

Not knowing any of the beaches so far, except the one I already saw yesterday I headed for it first.

I packed my diving goggles, as well as my snorkel in order to check how life's like under water. Which was a good choice. Even in Winter, which in fact we have here on Guadeloupe at the moment, the water is very warm, so there's no such thing as leaving the water in order to warm up, the temperature is just right. happy I actually expected more aquarium-like fish, but I only spotted a few blue and yellow ones, but I guess this was also due to the fact that I could not swim out more than 50 meters from the beach, because of the strong current. So - no corals, only sea grass, but well, this won't be the end of the diving story, as I want to do some more during my stay here.

At about 12 Vivianne and me, as well as a big part of her family (we were about 8) left for "lunch". Lunch was in a building which reminded me a bit of a German "Bierzelt", just it wasn't a tent but a real building, only built for events. Inside were a lot of tables with the names of the families participating. So we sat down on ours, and started with the aperitif. This means that you go to something like a bar where you find all sorts of alcohohl, juice, ice cubes, etc. (just like at a normal house-party) and you have to mix the drink yourselves. I was a bit confused, because everyone drank some Martini drinks, which I don't really like. But one bottle of typical rum of Guadeloupe smiled at me, so I decided to give it a shot. I mixed a recommendation from Vivianne, a typical drink for Guadeloupe (which name I cannot remember) but it's basically a Caipirinha (which noone knows here?) but with 50% rum instead of Pitu, and instead of load of crushed ice only one small ice cube. So I filled my glass up with pure rum and a bit of sugar and quarters of lemons (in the size of limettes). At some point I realized that this was maybe the wrong kind of drink for this time of the day ( bomb ), as well as the wrong kind of drink at all, since I agreed to drive ( rip ), since ... well ... it was only "lunch". Not wanting to hurt any feelings, customs, etc. I drank it, as I begin to realize that this would take a while longer, as everyone went in to get something to eat. I had a large fish in one peace, which was absolutelly brilliant (no pictures, so for that whistle ).

Then a band played, which played the typical music of Guadeloupe a mix of Jazz and Reggae:

and suddenly everyone started to move to the dancefloor to dance right there where the band was playing.

After a while I realized that I didn't feel the alcohol anymore, just due the fact of having about 30°C or more in that building. I therefore agreed to have some champagner with the rest of our group :-) A short while afterwards some politicians had a few speeches, because of the upcoming elections here in Guadeloupe. Even the current president showed up to have a speech and something to eat - at some point he even headded over to shake some hands and due to me standing directly at his destination, we also shook hands party. Coming to Guadeloupe and shaking hands with the president directly after arriving felt kind of good, although I don't have any knowledge about his politic opinion, etc.

The party continued with a lot of local music, but completly different then in Germany for example, everybody went to the dancefloor, regardless of age and everybody enjoyed the party. We then headed back from lunch at about 8 pm local time (not bad for lunch, isn't it?) and I took a rest to write for the blog and to edit a few pictures (which are not all uploaded yet)

Day 1 - Nuremberg to Paris to Point-a-Pitre

Today's goal: get into the first flight in Nuremberg, Germany to Paris (Charles-de-Gaulle), France, change the airport within Paris to Orly within 2 hours after planned landing time, get into the plane to Point-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe (FR) on time, get to my guest family with the driver of the school, survive the rest of the (by five hours) extended day. Happy End.

Realistic influences: when I got to bed we had 20 cm of snow and minus 10 degrees Celsius. If the plane will due to these influences not start on time in Nuremberg, I might not catch my onward flight. Catching the onward flight will be hard nevertheless, because I have to rely on a transfer bus that I'm not even sure it exists. The school that will catch me at the airport didn't confirm my payment for the stay, so maybe they didn't get the money? This would mean that there won't be any sign with my name on the airport only me standing totally confused in the crowd.

But stop this bullsh.. what happened in reality?

*beep* ... *beep-beep* ... *beep-beep-beep*

SHIT! That's the alarm - I have to get up! [3.45 am]
DAMN! I wasn't even asleep! (not event those three hours of sleep I counted on ...)
F***! I remember the weight issue from a few useless hours ago... And also a few things I remembered while trying to sleep, that I forgot to pack into my bag. That doesnt't make it easier, does it?

Well, now I have 29 kilos of luggage. 25 are allowed on the flights. If I could get rid of my bag, this ways about 4 kilos. No. That doesn't really work But after a few minutes I decided to kill my tripod and leave it at home. My small Gorillapod tripod thanks me and shines happily as the light reflects in one of it's legs. Still 26 kilos - well a nice smile to the check-in lady will do the rest love

Whilst going to have my shower I hat a quick glance at the window, as I moved on I reflected on what I just saw. Flurries going down in the shine of the streetlight across the road - covered deeply in snow?
MÈRDE! (I notice that a bit of french has remained in my memory ;-) ) New snow. Again. That means about 30 cm of snow in total and almost 10 on the roads, which will not be cleared yet. Well at least there will be no traffic this early. Sounds like a bit of drifting in the snow before going to the beach at the end of the day? (Alway look on the bright side of life right

But in fact we came to the airport pretty fast, against my predictions the roads were already free of snow (poor guys of the winter service) and we arived safe and quickly at the airport on time. I said au revoir to my girlfriend Julia who had to drive me here only to miss me for 4 weeks. awww

At the way in the bus towards the plane to Paris I made a photo to save an impression of the weather that day:

Last time I flew from Nuremberg in these weather conditions my plane had a two hour delay, because all the de-icing vehicles were busy. But it seams like I had either luck today or they increased the number, we started with only ten minutes delay due to de-icing and even arrived on time in Paris.

After getting out of the plane I met a colleague working for the same company, even in the same building as I do, so while getting to Orly - which worked just fine (not only the bus had a serious delay due to heavy traffic in Paris but the Plane from Orly too, otherwise this would have been very tight.

On this plane I had a very shitty seat (yes on the window as requested) but in the last row which has usally less leg room than any other row. (to check out this kind of stuff for your next flight, have a look at Seatguru. Well I did not, or I thought it can't be THAT tight! I'm 1,90 meters tall and sitting in Economy in seat with even less legroom then the others. nervous I could not move my legs at all, they were stuck in some kind of X position throughout this flight. Unfortunatelly no other seats were free - I would have moved in this case, but the flight was fully booked. Why do they give such seats to tall guys? It's not like they would not notice while assigning the seat, is it? I mean I wasn't the last one to check in.

Well nevermind, I arrived in one piece (even though now I'm only 1,80 tall, I somehow missed a part of my knee, I guess.

The first impressions of Guadeloupe were of course the heat (started the day below minus with snow), so as soon as the door of the plane opened, something like a shockwave went through the plane, as the cooled down air inside the plane mixed with the 28°C degree Celsius air outside. When I stepped outside I directly spotted a few coconut palms and noticed even more the hot and humide climate here, but well, It certainly feels a lot more like it in comparison to the weather at home, doesn't it? pirate

Then also the driver was at the Guadeloupe airport and I arrived pretty soon at my guest family - and they are very nice - so this time Murpy's law did not apply - maybe because I expected it ;-) Here is photo of my room:

I thought I would just hop into bed, because on my watch we had already 9 pm (and the fact that I did not have any sleep the night before...) but in Guadeloupe it was 4 pm - so I would be kind of wrong to go to bed now and give the jet-lag a chance knockout I unpacked everything and went for a walk around the house which was located 100 metres from the beach and the school, directly in the middle of St.Anne. As being this tired and totally out of order I just took a few shots, most of them where absolute rubbish, but I didn't really bother, at least one shot is kind of good, I made it directly as I saw the sea without taking a moment to find a good spot, proper lightning or any sense of professional photography at all, but well, suprisingly it worked quite well, but I am pretty sure that better ones will follow shortly:

This photo here shows an impressions on how it looks like in many of the streets:

After my walk we had an excellent dinner "Colombo", which is turkey, but basically Indian style. It is very typical for Guadeloupe (creole) as it is dish that only exists because of the mix of different cultures here. I also had the first Rum Punch - which Viviane, where I live, has made herself. Everything perfect but then I moved to bed to finally get some sleep. After...well I acutally cannot count how many hours I was awake - but it needs to be somewhere near to: a lot! zzz

Day 0 - Prepare for take-off and short introduction

, , ,

Tomorrow my trip to Guadeloupe - right into the heart of the Carribean Sea - will start. The goal will be to polish the rusty remains of my French which I had in school - because since those 7 years I've never actually used it down
But (and of course only) if I cannot avoid it: extreme relaxing, surfing, a bit scuba diving and a few parties, but of course, only if I have time left after my studies devil ... I will never learn Frensch I guess ...

Where was I? Right, tomorrow the journey will hopefully start (if I finish my preperations in time), because I will start at exactly "way too early" o'clock. therefore the journey will be for over 4 weeks, until the beginning of March :-)

This time, I will travel alone - not only because of my friends' lack of money, time and most of all French scared - but mainly because this will be a journey to learn French, including lessons in a special school (medialangues caraibes) - and bringing friends with me will lead to chatting all time long in German together ;-) - But there are other plans for another trip with those guys - beginning of next year will be time for another trip. A tour trough Panama and Columbia sounds nice, doesn't it? happy

Oh, I ran a bit off the track here. Well, everything is packed so far, now that I'm writing this entry. Of course my luggage ways two kilos more than allowed and I cannot possible leave anything at home! Especially not the two bottles of good Franconian white whine, the Christstollen and the Franconian Beer (they are presents, you fools *cheers*). Well losing two kilos is far to complicated, I will take care of that tomorrow... yikes Did I say that I leave tomorrow? Wrong. It's already - today. Nevertheless, I will skip the weight issue.

I mean, I have whole lot of six hours left until take-off! This will do ... :-)
