The real deal on PS3

The word is not official yet but Sony's next generation console may be release September 21st in the US, September 16th in Japan. Next-Gen reported today that game developers are aiming for a September release. Hopefully this means Sony will have good games ready for the release (Unlike Xbox 360) and will have a way to compete against Xbox Live. As it has been rumored for a few weeks Sony plans to release a counter-offensive called HUB. HUB would be a subscriber service that would allow chat, music and movie download, independent games and demos. None of this has been confirmed by SCEA, as usual they do not comment rumors, but all this is very likely.

Let's get real, the developers got their hands of the PS3 last week, how can you expect them to port the games in a few weeks for a Spring release (it is still possible though, but unlikely). As for the price, with the specs of the console they estimate a $900 US to manufacture. Which would make the selling price of $499 US sound right, but hold on! They had estimated the Playstation 2 to sell for $500 and Sony crushed them with a $299 starting price. But it is much likely that Sony will match the Xbox 360 price of $399 (premium) in order to compete with it. Anyhow, from my point of view, even if the PS3 is release a year after the X360 it is still a superior machine that will be worth the price. We're talking HD gaming, dual screen capabilities, massive connectivity (USB, SD, Memory Stick, Ethernet, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g) and the best games out there p: .

When they say it's worth waiting for it is. You'll have the new blu-ray reader at your disposal for their new DVD format (Games will come on blu-ray discs, unlike X360 that uses regular DVDs that contain 5 times less data)... Did I mention you could have up to seven wireless controllers? Thinking of a multiplayer football game in your living room, good to know

Point made, you have an extra 6 months to save money and buy a PS3. (+ a home theater sound system + an HD LCD/Plasma screens that support 1080i/p [or two!])

*UPDATE - CNET.com and other websites report a rumord that the PS3 could be delayed up to 2007. Problem is that Sony will still not comment witch leaves rumor control out of hand.

Metal Gear Saga Volume 1

, ,

More great news for Metal Gear fans. For all pre-orders of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence you will get this exclusive DVD recalling the MG Saga. This indepth documentary revisits games from the original Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid SnakeAs stated in a previous post MGS 3.5 is a remake of the hit game MGS3: Snake Eater that came out in 2004. You basically have the original game with added content such has additional camouflage and face paint. The newest feature will the 3rd person camera which will let you control the viewing angle of your character. I believe this feature is not enough to buy the game if you have the original. But hopefully this is not the only thing included in MGS 3.5 (Subsistence)! It includes a second disc called Persistence which will feature online gaming, a first for the Metal Gear series. The only mode will feature game styles that resemble Deathmatch, Capture the flag (I mean Frog), Assault. This second disc will mostly support one against all mode, team fight strategy and free-4-all killing p: . The first disc will let you fight boss from the original game, more Ape Escape stages, and a Demo theater featuring funny videos made by the production team.

But why stop there? We'll be blessed with a limited edition containing a third disc called Existence. This added bonus will feature a full director's cut of the game in a movie like style. So for those who never finished the game or just want to watch all the action over again, you sit tight and watch the whole game. You'll tell me what's the point? Well this mean you can show your friends how great the game is and how fantastic the story line is.

If you add it up, a fan like me will try to get a hold of all 4 discs (if you include the Saga vol. 1 DVD with pre-orders) as soon as possible. I did mention in a previous post that a version would come with a USB headset bundled with it. Can't wait for all the hype, it's going to be fun! Don't know the price yet, I'll have to pre-order soon. The game is due March 14, 2006.

Blu-ray, all the way

, ,

I've been supporting it since the beginning and I'm not ready to give up on them yet! Blu-ray is one of the next generation optical disc. We first had CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray might be the next evolution. As any new generation comes forth there is always a battle of different formats, so in this race Blu-ray discs must compete against HD-DVDs. I will not go in depth of explaining both format but will say that HD-DVD focuses in improving current DVDs architecture to increase their data capability, Microsoft is their biggest sponsor. HD-DVDs will benefit manufacturers because they'll be able to maintain their current installation. On the other hand, Sony is one of the supporters of the Blu-ray brand, their advantage is the higher data capacity that can reach 50 GB. I figure that if you make a new standard lets make the change for the most advance one, I believe HD-DVD should be like a mid-step before the arrival of Blu-ray. But it seems the war will start in the middle of this year as they release HD-DVD and Blu-ray players as long as titles with high definition content. Next-gen DVDs might include Java games and 1920x1080 pixels resolution. Let's mention that Sony's PS3 is due out this spring and is to support games using those Blu-ray discs. This might mean that Blu-ray will a solid foot in the market.

Check Wikipedia for wider coverage on the Blu-ray and www.blu-raydisc.com to hear them boasting their merits.

Fable: The Lost Chapters

,

A new game to add to my collection addictive games. Fable: The Lost Chapters, is an RPG style game with the live 3D environment. This game made its debut on PC as an extended version of the Xbox's Fable game. When I say addictive, I mean really fun! Their collaboration with Lionhead studios is a signal for morality content through out the game. To cut shot, you get to be a good or evil Hero, you have a few main quests that keep the story together and a lot of optional quests that increase playtime by several hours!

The story starts in your little home village. You're a small brat and get to do what you want. Depending on what you do you'll gain good points or evil points. This goes on through out the game an as you complete quests. You get to decide if you want to help the bandits take a town or defend the town itself. You learn, after joining the Guild, to master powerful spells to help you decimate your enemies. Beside the quests, you can fall in love, buy houses, get married, become mayor, kill the bad guys terrorizing the streets. Important note, you get older as you play so you're not a brat the hole game, my character is now 63 years old. But still in great shape! With the expressions system you get to build a social life and forge your legend, your own Fable.

Your Hero fighthing a Balverine (Werewolf)

PS: I've got more than 18 hours of play until now, they said the first version was kind of short, lets hope I haven't reached the expansion part yet.
No worry I have a good character until now.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

A new chapter just unfolded. The next generation of Metal Gear has been presented. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots features Snake (Solid or Boss?) with his high-tech gear and well aged Otacon. Of course we're getting a few glipses of what PS3 graphics will look like. Picture yourself in a few months playing this game! Not much details to shout out. Let's take this as a nice tease. :D
