My Opera is closing 3rd of March

The Chronicles.

Revolution in a country garden.

Just an interesting fact.

After having a little chat with jekav in my previous post I decided to tell you something about my native town, Arkhangelsk. (Of course, you can call it a city, but I like the word "town" better. For me there is some cosiness around this word, something warm. smile And besides, it rather small compared to other cities in Russia. The population is 350,000 people. Almost nothing compared to Moscow's 10 mln!! bigsmile)

Surely, you can simply read everything on wiki, but that's boring isn't it? And I could retell it, but that's boring isn't it? I could go on repeating this phrase, but that's boring, isn't it? irked

So I've decided to give you a nice interesting fact in case you visit Russia. Or in case you get a hold of some Russian money: you can find my town on the 500-rouble banknote!

That's Peter the Great on the left, who'd come to Arkhangelsk to build first Russian fleet some 300 years ago, then there's... er.. I guess it's his ship worried, and in the background you can see a marina. (Don't ask me, I got this word from a dictionary. bigsmile That's like a railway station, but for ships. bigsmile )

That's it, folks! smile

Poor poplars... =(Das Leben kann so prachtvoll sein!! =)

You can see some more banknotes on the boring wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_ruble#Seventh_ruble bigsmile

"Of course, you can call it a city, but I like the word "town" better. For me there is some cosiness around this word, something warm."
If you ask me it's very cold over their! lol p But I'm sure it's cosy!

Peter the Great, I know he visited the netherlands to study shipmaking. smile

btw a marina is a harbour for yachts... It could be his yacht, but I don't think they had that kind of thing back then. smile It's probably a functional ship (warship I guess).

When I ever visit Russia I will try make a stop in your 'town'.

JonnyJonnsen Wednesday, March 11, 2009 8:49:58 PM

I was in Russia 3 times, but never in your town, only in Moscow sad

merlin!pintavodki Wednesday, March 11, 2009 10:36:27 PM

Jonnsen, don't be sad, Moscow is not that bad after all. But not that good, in fact. bigsmile

Jurjen, well, it sure is rather cold up here, but the winter can also be nice, can't it? smile

And about the marina.. No, it is a modern building, from the Soviet time, not the Peter's. bigsmile You can buy a ticket there ant then take a ship down the river. I guess it is better to call this thing "a passenger ship terminal". bigsmile bigeyes

Jurjenjekav Wednesday, March 11, 2009 11:54:13 PM

of course it is newer doh I should have paid better attention.
terminal would be a good word I guess, but my English isn't the best...

Winter can be nice indeed, but I'm more a warm weather person myself.

JonnyJonnsen Thursday, March 12, 2009 12:50:49 PM

Moscow was ok, but for me it was so damn overcrowded and full.
I didn't stay in Moscow City, i was in a -for russians- small town near Moscow:))) Though, for myself it is damn big, because my native town has only 4000 inhabitants.
I visited some nice places in Moscow itself and it was great smile

merlin!pintavodki Thursday, March 12, 2009 9:45:12 PM

Yep, Moscow is really an overcrowded city. It's nice to watch some famous places like Kremlin and the Lenin Mausoleum (knockout), but living there is not for me either. People are very nervous there, always in a hurry. scared
You town has 4000 inhabitants and you think it's small, my town has 350.000 and I think it's small. lol

Jurjen, a warm weather person? Do you get much warm weather in Netherlands?

JonnyJonnsen Friday, March 13, 2009 2:08:47 PM

Well, and what i call a big city, the one who is the nearest to my town, has only 140.000 inhabitants)))))
I wonder how you call that smile
I visited some places and noticed they have special prices for foreigners, so i pretend to be russian, and let my friend buy the tickets, it worked every time except of one time, a very old woman(with a beard yuck ) who was sitting at the entrenc eand check the tickets said smth to me in russian and i replied in the best german: "Watt wills du?" smile So i had to buy a foreigners ticket.

Jurjenjekav Friday, March 13, 2009 8:27:40 PM

Not enough warm weather if you ask me. In the summer it can be okey, but it also often rainy weather which is no fun.

But having different seasons is nice as well I guess. Always having the same weather would be boring too.

If you don't like big cities, you should live in the Netherlands, here is the list of the four largest cities in Holland: lol
1 Amsterdam 743.600
2 Rotterdam 533.910
3 Den Haag 475.680
4 Utrecht 258.520

But they are all quite close to each other.

merlin!pintavodki Friday, March 13, 2009 8:49:42 PM

Jonnsen, yeah, some people and museums here in Russia like making money a lot. The price can be 50 roubles for Russians and like 300 or 500 for foreigners.. knockout Crazy indeed. And a very old woman... with a beard? Yuck!!yuck

Jekav, thanks, but I'm quite comfortable with my hometown. bigsmile Of course, you can't smoke marijuana and have gay marriages up here, but that's not a big deal for me. bigsmile And you can also get flooded down there, don't you? sad Or is it just a stereotype? lol Just kidding. lol Anyway, I suppose, I'll stick here for some time. The most dangerous things here are polar bears in the streets. With balalaikas and drinking vodka. lol

hey, this 'marina', we call it "morvokzal' bigsmile
and this 500-rouble banknote reminds me of banknotes of 100.000-kupons and even 1.000.000!!!! as far as that money wasn't in use anymore, i used to "go shopping" with them when i was a child... i had the whole bag of old soviet and early-years-of-Ukrainian-independence money bigsmile oh..good ol' days... p lol

merlin!pintavodki Monday, March 23, 2009 8:41:14 PM

Well, we also call it this way, or usually МРВ, short for "Морской-речной вокзал". Because it stands on the bank of a river, you see. smile And you can also take a ship to sea at the same time. (Though I've heard that it is not like this nowadays and the big ships from sea cant't come here anymore because the river got shallow.. sad ) Anyway, there still are some things you can see just sailing up & down the river, we have an old wheel-ship. Or whatever you call it. bigsmile

And the money, yes. That was funny, we used to call a 1.000.000 "limon" and it sounded so "cool". bigsmile Those "new Russians" and some gangsters would say it this way. lol I don't know if you did this in Ukraine. =) Did you?

bigsmile we used to play like this!! it was so cool spock irked p

merlin!pintavodki Wednesday, March 25, 2009 8:48:24 PM

Yeah, they don't make toys like those anymore.. bigsmile I guess there are many thing one can add to your list.. just can't remember anything right now.. может, альбомы с наклейками? =)bigsmile
