Just another E!

Drifting lost in a sea of possibility.

Quote the Pigeon, "Boo!"

, ,

So I've settled down in Houston. Everything is pretty much in order. I've got a job, an apartment, a roommate, and a solved pigeon problem. Our tiny second floor apartment includes a little balcony. Problem is, our courtyard is some sort of pigeon breading ground and most of the other balconies were already equipped with pigeon netting when we moved in. Ours wasn't. The mountains of poop pretty much coated the balcony floor. So, of course, we paid the apartment complex to come put up some netting but before they got around to installing the stuff, it was too late. The pigeons had laid eggs.

We agonized over the morality of destroying these pretty white eggs before they become massive poop machines. I mean, when is the egg considered a living bird? When it is fertilized, or when it hatches?

After much soul searching, and one chicken omelet latter, we decided to kill the pigeon eggs in favor of our own desire for outdoor living. We're selfish bastards, I know, but thats the circle of life for ya. For two days after the nest was gone, dad pigeon slept on our railing all night staring blindly like a gargoyle into our living room with his tiny beady red eyes.

And leaving a large pile of poop every morning.

Once, when arriving home from work, I even caught mommy and daddy pigeon doing it right in front of me on the sidewalk as if to say "Ha we'll just make more eggs and put those on your balcony too, Egg smasher!"

Then the netting went up. I don't know if they'll place a new nest but with his old perch gone dad has taken to sleeping on the concrete steps that lead up to our apartment; squatting nefariously under a stoop... watching us unflinchingly as we stomp of the stares.

It has become quite obvious that he is plotting our demise.

If I die falling down the stairs, look for beak marks on my ankles.

Gloom. Glorious, gloom.

Thick fog settled over the county on Monday, making it impossible to see more than a half a block away in town. The dense air lasted the entire day, even into the night when a vicious thunderstorm was added into the mix. Thats right, snow, rain, fog, thunder, and lightning in the middle of the night, all at the same time. The fog killed a few people too. I went out and decided to take some pictures at around 3:30pm.

Most of the photos are of our County Courthouse, which thoroughly looks the part of a moody Gothic horror mansion with it's classic stone architecture and the thick blanket of fog. You can see the whole album here. I love the impenetrable veil grey on such a day, the mystery of what it hides. I love the silence and calm it brings... and the way everything echos when silence is broken.

Wet feet.

Now this is awesome! Thats a picture from the front page of the local newspaper's website and that's my brother driving his car. Reminds me of a lol cat. Classy.

My brother saw them taking the picture and told us that he'd probably be in the evening paper. But that text makes it so much better.

Yup.

It rained a bit last night. What happened to the cold? Better if it was snow. At least the roads could be cleared.

Opera Ninja?

, ,

Apparently the Opera Ninja moonlights as a Lava Ninja in Ninjatown. Who knew? The similarities in style have to be more than a coincidence and I can't help but wonder at it. Is this the origin of the Opera Ninja? The whole idea bums me out.

Based on the trailer, the game looks quirky and weird in a good way but it hardly matters as it's a DS game and I don't own one. Maybe someday.

Also, who thought this was a good idea? Ninja Poo? Really? Do any of these Wee Ninjas make Ninja Wee? And how prominently will the golden ninja fluid feature in the game?

Elizabeth: The Golden Age

,

There is a new trailer out for Elizabeth: The Golden Age. This is the first I've heard of this sequel to the 1998 Elizabeth but I wasn't exactly searching for it. I certainly enjoyed the first one. It was well-written and meticulously resplendent but it is hardly a popcorn flick I usually prefer.

The trailer looks and sounds gorgeous, and I'd expect nothing less. I cannot help but be sad that Christopher Eccleston isn't on the cast list but I'm sure I'll recover. You'll also notice that in the last film Her Majesty received the favors of a disheveled Joseph Fiennes and in this one she's moved on to a pirate-y Clive Owen. Queen Blanchett certainly has discerning taste and it's improved with age.

Geoffrey Rush will also be returning, minus that pirate-esque Scottish accent he's been sporting in the interim.

Still The Second Biggest Monkey Head Around.

, , ,

If you haven't noticed, my Opera has added advanced browsing statistics for your blog through HitLink (Check your account page). Which got me pretty excited. I love checking out who randomly visited my blog.

I was checking out the referral pages and discovered that my blog post on Monkey Island/PotC is the top google search result for "second biggest monkey head i've ever seen." Which is pretty darn awesome. Don't you wish you were as cool as me?

I also noticed that most of the people visiting my blog are using Internet Explorer. What's with that? Where is the Opera love?

Spam

I got a spam message today in my Opera community inbox, from user jackg. It was your standard Nigerian money scam. I blocked him, of course, but does anyone know of a way to report him for abuse? Thanks.

Ten signs you spend to much time in online forums.

, , ,

1: You ignore biological needs in order to hit the refresh button just 'one more time.' Food, water, and bathroom breaks can wait. The conversation cannot!

2: 'In the forum' is how you spend your evening downtime. You make an effort to go out whenever you suddenly realise how sad that statement is.

3: You know most of the people by their real name and have seen real pictures of them. You also know the name of their cat(s). It seems they all have cats.

4: You've been late for work or class because you having a really great conversation about... well, you don't remember, but it was hilarious!

5: You mention your conversations with 'online friends' regularly when in conversations with 'real-life friends' even though you know they don't care.

6: You start personifying all aspects of the forum, from quote buttons to auto-merge features. You imagine their personalities, eating habits, and clothing. As a group you discuss which elements are out to get you. Still, as long as you don't believe they talk to you, your probably not committable.

7: You watch your favorite TV shows at the same time as other forum members and keep a running commentary even though they're miles away and you've got friends or family in the next room.

8: You keep waiting for people to yell 'Norm!' when you come into a thread. You know it won't happen, but the vibe is there and your chair is well shaped to your but cheeks.

9: You have another thread or forum established just so you could talk about everything that goes on in the main forum. You go there to dis other members and talk about forum politics, but mainly its just an excuse to waste more time online with more pointless posts.

10: Your internet friends become your real-life friends. Life is good.

Now what's your favorite forum?

Something I'm looking Forward too

Photo Updates

, , ,

I posted some updates to my photo section in my Nature Shots and Random People Albums. Check them out.

This is a photo of me taken at Watson Lake Park in Prescott, Arizona. I absolutely love this place, and looking at this photo you can see why. :D My mother and I spent a good part of the day climbing up and down over the granite boulders that surround the lake. It was a warm day but the high altitude slowed us down more than the heat. These three shots were taken at Fossil Lake in Southern Indiana. My friends and I spent a couple of days camping and caving in the area. It was a very wet weekend, Ana and I went fishing on the last night. (see Ana's infrequently updated blog in my links on the left) It's another shot of Ana, this time from a going away party our freshman year of college. The expressions in this shot amuse me to no end, it probably helps that I know these people. Baby Screech Owls! They had a nest in one of the trees in our yard this year. They're approximately the size of fat squirrels and twice as cute.

You can click on the photos to see a slightly larger version. bye!
