VICTOR Wong Pin Kuan, one of Malaysia’s most popular exports in Chinese pop, once confessed that he hated the idea of taking part in karaoke competitions because “one would have to be very showy and flashy; I’m not that sort!”
Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Wong has come a long, long way from his days as an accounting student. A trained classical guitarist, Wong used to compose songs in his free time; local artistes such as Ciang Teng used to record his compositions even before Wong became a full-fledged artiste himself.
The tide, however, was about to change. Three friends – radio deejay Chan Foong, musician Tan Hoe and Michael – approached Wong to help realise the trio’s dream of producing, recording and performing an all-original Malaysian album in Chinese.
Wong knew Chan and Tan from his behind-the-scenes involvement in local music and he got to know Michael when they were attending the same church in Kuala Lumpur. You could say that he was just tagging along for the ride.
“I was doing my second year in ACCA when they asked me to join them. They had this idea of doing a DIY (do-it-yourself) album,” said Wong in English when asked recently how it all began for him. “I didn’t hesitate of course, but I was a bit confused myself because as much as I love music, I knew it was very hard to survive as a musician in Malaysia. So, I was more focused on my studies. Making the album was more like a hobby.
“But as we were almost finishing the album, I realised that it had a lot of potential.”
As it turned out, the album, titled Zhang Xin (The Palm), was an instant smash when it was released under Rock Records Malaysia in 1995, selling over 30,000 copies, an unheard of figure then for a local Chinese album. It was released under the name Michael & Victor. The next year, Michael & Victor released their second album entitled Tuo Xin (Conflict of the Heart) to equally encouraging response.
But even before success in Malaysia, a copy of Zhang Xin landed on Taiwan’s famed producer-songwriter Jonathan Li’s desk. He was immediately taken in and started inquiring about the singers on the album.
Wong remembered that Li’s praise was used as a slogan to promote them in Malaysia – the slogan said: The voices that moved Jonathan Li for the first time in three years at Rock Records. Li then wanted to invite them over to Taiwan but to record as solo artistes.
“I was extremely moved by his gesture because I admire him as a songwriter. But if we were to go over at that time and perform as solo artistes, then the album that we worked so hard at would never be released. Which was why we stayed and released two albums here first.”
The success of Michael & Victor in Malaysia gave the top executives in Rock Taiwan the confidence to market them as a duo in Taiwan as well.
