Opera 10.51 released -- the fastest browser just got faster

Opera 10.50 made major improvements in the speed of the browser, earning it the title of "The fastest browser on Earth". But Opera 10.50 is no longer the world's fastest browser.

Benchmark Summary

Today Opera releases version 10.51 that has many fixes and improvements, and makes exciting improvements to the impressive performance introduced in the previous version. In Futuremark's Peacekeeper benchmark, Opera 10.51 is an impressive 27% faster than before.

Improvements in the Sunspider JavaScript benchmark are also seen, reducing the time in the benchmark from 439.6 seconds to only 412.2 seconds, soundly beating all other browsers once again.

Opera 10.51 improves performance in Google's V8 benchmark as well, increasing performance another 10% in our tests.

In addition to having the fastest JavaScript performance, Opera 10.51 continues to lead the way in ECMAScript 3 conformance, achieving the best score of all major browsers, as seen in a recent post of Sputnik test results to The Chromium Blog. This is testament to Opera's commitment to paving the way in standards compliance.

Opera 10.51 78 failures
Safari 4 159 failures
Chrome 4 218 failures
Firefox 3.6 259 failures
Internet Explorer 8 463 failures

Opera Software has yet again achieved a new milestone in browser performance. Download Opera 10.51 today at http://www.opera.com/browser/.

still the mouse middle button is not working for me..

Joseph D. Lienjdlien Monday, March 22, 2010 12:29:49 PM

Working to do what? I haven't noticed any problems with functionality related to middle mouse-button clicks (of which there are many that I use frequently).

Jaywin Jacob Varghesejaywin Monday, March 22, 2010 12:37:16 PM

Yes! I was waiting for this update. Now I can go back to using opera as the scrolling performance is now fixed. Congarats to opera team!

But scrolling in download.com is still choppy sad

Does anyone know if 10.51 fixes the WYSIWYG Moodle toolbar problem and the email client problem that fails to view parts of emails below the list?

SMGGM Monday, March 22, 2010 1:52:28 PM

Too bad the right mouse button doesn't work in web apps like Google Docs. That is the main thing I really find annoying in Opera.

experttease Monday, March 22, 2010 2:34:03 PM

@SSGGM, It does work when you change a setting. Press F12, go to site preferences, and then scripting, then select: "allow scripts to detect context menu events".

Sorted.

Marian M.usiRev Monday, March 22, 2010 2:35:39 PM

well.. since i installed opera 10.50 i cannot use my middle mouse button to work, i click, and thats pretty much everything i can do, no action there.. dunno whats wrong, because in firefox theres no problem

I love Opera and is a long time user but what disappoints me is the memory usage in version 10.51. My notebook has 1.5 GB RAM and I am running Windows Vista Home Basic. It's only been 10 minutes since I am using Opera and Opera 10.51 is already using more than 330 MB RAM. There are only 3 tabs open and Opera Unite is not running. Is something wrong? Can someone explain this?

David Pursesimplicitylinux Tuesday, March 23, 2010 7:56:18 AM

Thanks Opera for making this two releases in a row not for Linux. I personally want to distribute the best software for Linux out there with my distro, and unless you post the zipped binaries, I can't do that. Shame, because 10.51 sounds awesome and it annoys me that Windows users get to use 10.50 and 10.51 whilst I would love to distribute and use 10.51 but can't just because I refuse to use Windows. Bad form, especially when you know the community will forgive buggy software. Release early, release often.

Are you using Flash on any of the sites? Flash is well known for using a ton of memory and CPU - to the point where I can heat my seat by placing the fan exhaust of my laptop at the middle of my chair and going for a cigarette whilst pausing a YouTube video.

MewMewQuicheFlareonmaster Tuesday, March 23, 2010 11:14:53 AM

how do I downgrade back to the previous version?
I can't do anything in my calender any more since I got this new version of opera, can't add, see or delete it's really annoying me to death. Now I need to move over to a different browser every time I need to check my calender.
Nor can I close pdf files anymore without having opera crashing on me. I can open them and read them and that works fine but when I close the pdfs opera goes nuts and closes down and I need to kill the prosess in order to be able to start up opera again cry

The_Witt Tuesday, March 23, 2010 12:15:21 PM

Is there a version that will work on an older Mac? non-intel...i had to reeinstal 10.1

Stephen Turrellstve10 Tuesday, March 23, 2010 12:16:07 PM

@MewMewQuiche
I had problems upgrading from 10.1 what worked for me was to back up contacts etc. or just synchronize Opera
then uninstall Opera & do a clean install.
Still had a problem with some help pages but reloading the page fixed that.

MingoMaxmingomax Tuesday, March 23, 2010 1:54:38 PM

In the Mac version, opera is very slow and in linux version, the renderization of fonts is very terrible.

CyaPalmOS Tuesday, March 23, 2010 3:12:26 PM

I'm not upgrading until RealAquarium is compatible!

Hehe

judasane Tuesday, March 23, 2010 4:03:04 PM

judasane Tuesday, March 23, 2010 4:04:06 PM

I also found a problem with flash when I try to take a photo in facebook.

Opera needs to catch up with us graphic designers and photographers, and offer optional color management control for images. It would not only make the browser as compelling to us for use as Firefox and Safari is, but since the option would exist to turn color management on and off, it would make it the preferred browser for us.

MewMewQuicheFlareonmaster Tuesday, March 23, 2010 4:24:08 PM

@stve10
thanks for telling but didn't solve the problem for me.
Found how to revert back to 10.10 and now it all works again. So I'll just wait with upgrading until they have solved these crashing and view issues.
Love the synchronization with opera so I have the same stuff with me no matter what computer I'm at <3 one of the big reasons for why I changed to opera as main browser.

@Heath Rowell
I totally agree about the colour management Rowell, although I think they should fix these bugs they got on there hands first before adding more things that would cause more bugs before really tested

Still love Opera though (even though I had to revert back to 10.10)

CyaPalmOS Tuesday, March 23, 2010 6:29:19 PM

Yeah I'd rather have stability and functionality over speed any day. I'm currently on 10.1 and still lovin it

rrppjj Tuesday, March 23, 2010 7:03:33 PM

its not very fast (10.51)

Jody ThorntonJody70 Wednesday, March 24, 2010 6:40:16 PM

I find that when I upgraded v10.51 over v10.10, Opera takes 25 seconds for the browser to load. The title bar loads, but the toolbars, status bar and page window all take another 25 seconds. I am using WinXP Pro SP3 32-bit, so I get the blurry menu bar as well.

I downgraded to v10.10, and all is well again.

Cheers,

great job my eye new browser has crashed on me a total of 35 times since download

CodeCafe Thursday, March 25, 2010 10:57:21 PM

I've been an Opera user since late 2005, and for me at least, this is the slowest version of the browser released to date. Going back and forward in history can take up to a couple of seconds for the page to completely render. There are also some strange bugs where:
* network connection would not work within the browser, until restarted.
* highlighting a clickable link caused icons in the status bar to "duplicate"

System specs, in case it's relevant:
CPU: AMD athlon 3000+ (single core)
RAM: 3GB ddr2
HDD: 7200RPM 160gb

I've already reinstalled Opera 9.63, which is the true "fastest browser" version of Opera.

Numerous problems with the new download ... It opens some links, not others (happening, both with my Speed Dial, as well as links other links), and also takes forever to load the page ... Help button not working ... Don't see anything, anywhere that allows me to clear cache or cookies ...

Please advise asap on corrections/fixes ...

Until then, I will have to go back to using FireFox

I have installed the new version in two different PC, in all two in few minutes Opera uses more than 2GB of memory and PC stops to respond. I visit some pages with Flash but this is not a problem with the previous versions. I have had to downgrade to 10.50 Beta. Anybody have experienced that?

No, none of the sites use Flash.

Yes, I have experienced it too. Seems more like a bug. Hopefully, this would cease to exist in the forthcoming version.

mooskaan mmooskaan Sunday, March 28, 2010 11:52:12 AM

Please help me --
HOW do I downgrade to 10.50 ?
I noticed some of you smart users have done that already. Could you help me do the same?
How should I go about it without loosing any of my bookmarks, speed dial, & other settings?

In this new version [10.51], I have lost the cursor & the tool bar; besides it keeps crashing too :-(

Thanks in advance.

mooskaan mmooskaan Sunday, March 28, 2010 11:56:17 AM

Oops ! Sorry, downgrading to 10.10, not 10.50 as I mistakenly typed above.

Saptarshi Roysaroy01 Sunday, March 28, 2010 11:59:59 AM

I am also experiencing frequent crashes in Opera since version 10.10.

gee tonyurboyanthony Sunday, March 28, 2010 12:29:08 PM

at first i thought it was very good and stable ... but at times it cant load myyy favorite websites i use on a daily basis .. so jst for 1 websiite i have to use chrome... btw i hate chrome cause of there privacy !

Saptarshi Roysaroy01 Sunday, March 28, 2010 9:39:36 PM

I hope Opera is listening.

after you uninstall, make sure to delete the Opera folders in <user folder>/Application Data and <user>/Local Settings/Application Data, otherwise you will get some errors if you have a mail profile setup.

Beware that doing this will make you lose all of your settings (wand, bookmarks, skins, etc)

gee tonyurboyanthony Monday, March 29, 2010 8:24:00 PM

going to opera 10.10 until i see a worthy version of opera. opera 10.10 jst renders everything so stable and quickly.

Arbenarbenperani Monday, March 29, 2010 11:10:30 PM

Hallo

Lately I am having some problems with msn and hotmail in Opera 10.50.
I am able to open the first page and then nothing more.
I am able to open my hotmail account but not my inbox or outbox or something like that.
In other msn pages (msn.com, msn.de, msn.at and so on) the same - it shows just the first page and thats it.
With 10.10 I had absolutely no problems.
I have accepted all cookies and stuff like that even though sometime I get a message like "Activate/Accept the cookies"

With other web pages I dont have such problems

Any idea how to solve it?

Thnx

wstu Tuesday, March 30, 2010 5:55:03 AM

Hello

I switch to opera in 9.5. It works fantastic. But the 10.51 is strange. Generally, I would like to call it slow. Perhaps it is because my connection characteristic (I use wifi or slow ADSL), or the 10.51 itself. I just do not know. But in some case (rarely) the opera 10.51 could open the link on youtube pretty fast than other browsers.

gee tonyurboyanthony Tuesday, March 30, 2010 12:08:13 PM

when i went back to opera 10.10 i couldnt log into myspace.. because its not supported so now im stuck with opera 10.51 its not that bad but its whatever ... OPERA FTW

wick rowick7 Tuesday, March 30, 2010 4:03:03 PM

it is working fine, the middle mouse button wasn't working because of another software =)
thx for this new version

Bas KooijBCage Wednesday, March 31, 2010 10:52:09 AM

The middle mouse button wasn't working for me either on version 10.5x. It turned out it was the Logitech Setpoint drivers causing the problem.

Click the tray icon for the Setpoint driver. Look for the task which is assigned to the scroll wheel. Select 'other task' and press the button 'select task'. Now assign 'Middle Button' to the scroll wheel. In my case the wheel was set to 'AutoScroll' and changing it to 'Middle Button' fixed the problem.

Note that I've tranlated menu items from dutch, so the SetPoint drivers may have a slightly different terminology than what I've used.

Arbenarbenperani Friday, April 2, 2010 8:45:27 AM

Hi

Any idea how to use hotmail in Opera 10.51?
It is absolutely impossible.
I tried with masking the site as fiefox or IE8 but no result.
I got back to opera 10.10 but now I can not some Unite features such as media player and stream media?

Thnx in advance

Uwe StarkWebstau Friday, April 2, 2010 3:42:42 PM

Hi

Try following account-settings:
POP-Server: pop3.live.com
Portnumber: 995
Securely Connection: Yes (TLS)
SMTP-Server: smtp.live.com
Port: 25
Security: Yes (TLS)
These settings still works after various Opera-upgrades on my system, now running Opera 10.51.
Hope it will help you!
