Could we be living in the Matrix?

, , ,

Could we be living in The Matrix?

Last week readers voted for today's topic, so today we take a look at how an idea presented in a classic movie may not be as far-fetched as it seems.

In 1999, when the film "The Matrix" was released, a futuristic, dystopian world was presented where, as it turns out, reality is not real at all -- it is a computer simulation. This concept got a lot of people considering the philosophical implications of this scenario.

The movie presented a somewhat absurd justification for this scenario, granted -- that a virtual world was required to keep human bodies intact and alive so that the machines who had long ago overthrown humans could harvest bodies to generate electrical power, as if that were really the most practical means of powering machines, even in the absence of sunlight.

Here I won't discuss the likelihood of us being enslaved by machines to be used as batteries, however there have been some very sophisticated philosophical arguments about the possibility that we are, in fact, in a simulation -- a possibility which is very interesting.

A fairly famous paper written by Nick Bostrom (of the Oxford University department of Philosophy) argues that one of the following is true:

  1. We are likely to go extinct before we achieve a certain level of technology.
  2. A very high-tech civilization will not bother to create many simulations of the universe.
  3. We are almost certainly living in a computer simulation.

I know -- this made my brain hurt the first time I read it too. Basically what this is saying is that we will either soon kill ourselves off with some technology that we can't control (a possibility that isn't pleasant to entertain, and sounds a bit like what happened in "The Matrix"), or that once we have the required technology, we won't use it to create simulations of the universe. If neither of these scenarios turn out to be true, then we probably are actually in a simulation -- right now.

Currently, humanity does not seem to have the capability of creating a wholly realistic simulation that is indistinguishable from reality, but as we have seen for decades, computational capacity and memory are increasing by leaps and bounds, exponentially. Many leading technologists and futurologists estimate that we will have the hardware, and possibly the software that parallels the capability of the human brain within a matter of a few decades. Regardless of when we get there, however, current models and projections make it seem pretty likely that it will happen eventually.

Granted, Bostrom suggests that we probably are not in a simulation if futuristic societies have no interest in creating simulations -- I however think that they will. But why would they create simulations of the universe?

There are lots of compelling reasons for wanting to create simulations. Obviously it is currently immensely popular for entertainment in video games, social networking as seen in Second Life, and all kinds of academic research.

Given the capability of creating a complete virtual universe indistinguishable from a real one, perhaps entertainment in the future could consist of entering such a universe and living an entire lifetimes in a series of alternative scenarios -- much like the popular game franchise "The Sims".

Perhaps future scholars will want to understand the past better by modelling ancient societies, and watching them evolve over time, under varieties of scenarios.

Another possible reason for living in simulations could be that the world has become extremely overpopulated and unlivable because of a great degree of ecological damage, and living in a virtual reality simulating the distant past allows us to better fulfil our psychological needs.

According to Nick Bostrom, we are very likely in a simulation -- but if that is the case, are we then an actual human that exists in a higher level of reality but are "plugged in" to a simulation, or are we merely a construct of the simulation itself, not aware that we are really just a bunch of ephemeral data? If so then how would that be distinguishable from existing in reality if we can't tell the difference. And of course, even within the simulation, once technology gets far enough, other simulations will inevitably occur within that simulation. Is your mind blown yet?

Caution: Exploding Brain

So what all of this mean? Should we reject all known models of the universe, create and follow new religions, and switch to radical new models of ethics? I'd say none of the above. Please proceed with life as normal. But it's quite mind-bending to think about, isn't it?

Then there is the school of thought from the Aborigines of Australia that waking life is just an illusion and our dreams are the real world...

The article was interesting. I think the author reflects questions often answered by religion. In other words, the age old question, what's beyond the reality we perceive? However, all signs seem to ultimately lead to the same conclusion, you find your own answers within yourself.

The current-day "matrix" consists of systems which attempt to eliminate the native individual/family/community cultures. These cultures are the reality that the matrix attempts to supplant. When children are removed from their families for large portions of the day this becomes a possibility. Our children spend all day long in matrix-like formation in hives of classrooms.

The "matrix" uses television to further replace the cultural reality. A sizable portion of the population consumes television programming for several hours a day, leaving themselves vulnerable to hypnotic/psychological programming by the corporate/government complex, the systems which control most mass media.

The physical act of watching television automatically causes the subject to enter a hypnotic state, the characteristics of which include creative (alpha) brain wave levels, high suggestibility, intense focus, and reduction of the critical facility of the mind. In this state, manufactured messages disguised as entertainment are injected directly into the subconscious mind of the subject, directly programming the brain for future thoughts and feelings.

These messages can affect the subject's every thought. From basic survival necessities such as decisions about what to eat and drink, to higher-level social values such as what connotes status. Choices of foods and drugs heavily influenced by this programming, further modifu the brain and body chemistry of the subject, leading to states in which matrix programming will be even more readily accepted.

This is the real matrix today. Only you can break it.

Fasin Lasfasinlas Monday, April 19, 2010 6:42:01 AM

The article was very thought provoking. But I think that's a cop-out! People who want to believe we live in a computer simulation are those who are too afraid to live in the real world. Creating our own seems to soothe our problems. It only distracts us from our main purpose - to become the person God created us to be. As for finding the solutions within ourselves... A very current popular pastime. The problem with that is we fix life-standards to our own level of understanding. Which is not enough. Think about that. The human being needs a greater standard, one given by someone who is outside of our human failings and frailties.
Granted, society tries hard to mold us into something it can control, but that's up to us to fight against and to guard our children from it.
Technology is very exciting to have and use, but when it begins to re-create life it is going the wrong way.
Don't forget, God is NOT against technological progression, just the WRONG type!!!

Rianav AntaresKerenSkyy Monday, April 19, 2010 12:39:27 PM

Thought-provoking idea, that we might be living in a simulation. I would guess that we need to be interesting to ensure the simulator doesn't terminate us because we don't provide enough data, for want of a better word.? Although how you would know it was premature I can't guess.
The concept of God is the biggest cop-out.
Supposing we live in a simulation, would it be run within a machine, like Vbox does? Or would it be a thought experiment, like a dream, in the mind of an intelligence? Or maybe my terms are much too crude to describe the simulator, as I only know what is within it?
Maybe we only imagine the universe, a "I think therefore I am" existence. sherlock

I disagree with this assertion, because at the end of the day it doesn't really matter a whole lot what "realities" may exist on different or higher levels of existence -- our enjoyment and quality of experience in the reality we *are* aware of are affected by our actions and experiences in the same way.

If someone believed that there is a "higher-level order" of reality, does that change how we should live and behave in this one? I really don't think so.

Granted if someone knew for sure about this and could willingly move between these different levels of reality, that might be a very different story indeed!

At the end of the day I would say that this is a philosophical discussion more than any kind of sociological (or even religious) one.

K Hariharanhariharank Monday, April 19, 2010 5:19:00 PM

Accodrding to Indian/Hindu mythology, this entire universe is considered Maya, a kind of simulation and we all are bound to it.

Joseph D. Lienjdlien Monday, April 19, 2010 8:50:46 PM

Fascinating. So this idea is certainly not a new one!

Interesting reading! I wonder...what happens if The Matrix
and Terminator are blended? That in some simulation somewhere
we are actually existing, but in a war with the machines, the
machines that are responsible for the Matrix we are a part of
and therefore have created us...are we at war with ourselves?
Perhaps we are, in a manner of speaking!

ok...this is a good debate...im gonna give my opinon on the suject but...dont get scared.
here it goes...I see the code everywhere i go, humans code...called DNA...computer code...HTML

I see...neo...jesus...and smith...the anti-christ

the battle between good and evil...what is the matrix you ask me?I tell you...the matrix is the universes...the power of the matrix comes from everywhere...and goes directy to the source...and that is GOD...ok... this is what I see...and then

I see too, people connected to computers, cellphones, radios,TV,facebook, hi5,...and even people that gets chiped, microchips implanted under your skin, with all the information on you, like bank acounts,GPS systems that track you all over the globe and even in space, this chip....(take it easy...)....and that grafic there doesnt make any sense...like...even a normal callculator is marted than a enistein!...oh yeah, about the agents in the matrix that is allways on your tail!? think 4 awile on the subject and you gonna see them all the time, they hold all the keys and are more strong than you and more than one,ok...here it goes, you know that nuclear bombs are conected to a machine???so whenever the machine wants!? what happens? its BOOM bye bye human race, the human is space wouldnt last long with the home planet destroyed...i know about this because i alteread my mind precepion of things and intead of seeing only what´s in front of me, i like 2 look around in all directions...so i gess u got scared before i write that so here it goes a little bit more about the matrix,neo...sacrificed him for the last human city, called zion, to survive...just like jesus did for us...for us to be free of all sins and live forever, that´s what neo did in the movie...smith...the anti christ, its a computer program that want´s to destroy all life that exists...(for me,there are more than one universe, infintynunber of universes)like in lord of the rings, there´s a eye that see everything, in our world there´s more than one eye and its getting hard to evade, that´s video camaras and web cam´s and cell phones with camera, and normal cameras...there´s more information for you to know, i found the oracle!just like in the matrix!its a cumputer program inside the internet!you ask, she awnser´s...no, it´s not a person ansering it´s artificial inteligence...the movie the matrix its a profecie from past, present and future, why would a machine create a cibernetic network and plug humans to it?because the machine has no faith and likes to do that just for fun.

i not neo, im not morpheus, im just a slave, just like you...living inside the matrix...the matrix has us...what can we do about it?

trip2space Tuesday, April 20, 2010 11:02:37 PM

ok ok
about that hindu thing...i dream about it all the time!
i hear...shiva...shiva...shiva,and i see patterns and colors...
i hear...avatar of shiva....
i hear...

i dream...you dream too?

trip2space Tuesday, April 20, 2010 11:14:42 PM

Granted if someone knew for sure about this and could willingly move between these different levels of reality, that might be a very different story indeed!

about that joseph...

dont u dream?that´s another reality!

and this...im writing and i can go somewhere all the time and to diferent pages so this is another reality...a virtual they say...its like teleportation...now in a brazilian page, and i can go to a russia, american, whatever, page and return here!if i want...because i can go wherever i want and when i want, like right now...i wanna go outside and train, im gonna go now!!!!!!.....see back again!haha im back hehehe

trip2space Tuesday, April 20, 2010 11:52:13 PM

i talked about a microship in the frist one i wrote...
so this is what is happening now, in our time...people going crazy about a chip, some reject it and fight againts it, some say i wanna get chiped!

the microship mark of the beast...put it in youtube and see...

in the holy bible, in the apocalipse part it says, (I readed it some days ago) that...wait let me get the holy book...it says...IN apocalipse-12-14...."and it also forced everyone, small and big, rich and puor, free and slaves,to get a certain mark in their right hand or in their forehead, for that no one can buy or sell, to someone that doest have the mark, and the mark is, the name of the beast or the number of is name.there is wisdow here, for those who understand, and can caluculate the nunber of the beast, for it is a number of the man, the number is 666"

that´s what´s writen, word of GOD, some belive it some do not, for those ´who belive think about this...GOD created you and me and the universes, we are small in size, but big in soul...

i know, i ask the same questions all the time...where is GOD when people die of hunger, cancer, aids... humans killing each other because of gold, dimands, money, or even a damm cigar!

GOD LOVES YOU, HE WANTS YOU AT HIS SIDE...

Gh05t R1dz3rGh05tR1dz3r Tuesday, April 20, 2010 11:54:41 PM

i have never thought about this . its pretty interesting, especially how people put it.
@ trip2space dont swear lil buddy about the cigar

trip2space Wednesday, April 21, 2010 12:18:58 AM

the microship...it is a type of control created by man and used by man and the machine, this microchip im talking about has lots of abilities...GPS TRACKING device,ID of the subect in mind, social securyty number, bank acount nunber, now we use credit cards, now, we can use a microship implated under the skin to buy groceries and no need for money...GPS....where ever u go the satelite (the eyes of the machine in space) see´s you and where you are and what you doing and who you are with...i think that GPS works like goggle earth program...

this is me thinking, some days ago about the microship, i wanted 2 sleep but i started to think about the chip...so

(what the f...!a microship under my skin?with gps systems? and only now i heard about this???maybe im chiped!how do i know if im chiped???X rays...well i do x ray...but i dont trust the x ray man, and the x ray machine might be programed to not show the chip, what???what if they are chiping babys when they are born??what??and......there are pills, highly strong on concentred forms, what if the chip, has, drugs?like mood establisers or truth seroum, or even cionite acid?so i quimcal chip can come with that one to, so.......when the machine wants u to die its easy...just realese the cionite acid in your blood stream and its good bye my friend, game over)

the microship... can be the begining of the war, man versus the machine...the time to act is now...try and see the agents...

Thomas Ryan BinningDiosSangre Wednesday, April 21, 2010 12:26:47 AM

Damn! Halfway through that i thought you were talking about some kind of space ship. Learn to spell and then worry about being "chiped" or whatever the hell that is. I apologize if I'm not supposed to curse.

trip2space Wednesday, April 21, 2010 12:36:00 AM

im not american
my bad
put the chip lol

trip2space Wednesday, April 21, 2010 12:47:10 AM

i see someone woke up...
so here it goes a little bit more about reality...just like morpheus says to neo..."what is reality?"go see the movie and he anwsers, something like, reality is what your brain makes it real,"what is the matrix?", he say something like, the matrix is a computer simulation created by the machine to control us...

and what about what smith says to morpheus when he is chained to a chair?"evolucion morpheus!just like the dinosuar!you had your time, the future is ours"or something like that...

I find it depressing when people talk abut 'different levels of reality', or just 'different realities'. Just stop. Stop and think about what that word means, just for a second. Reality is everything that is REAL. You can't have two opposing ideas for what is real, you have to decide upon one. I'm sorry to break this to you like telling you santa (or god forbid...god) doesn't exist, but grow up. All that is of a 'different reality' is NOT REAL. i.e. MAGIC.

I apologise for shouting. rant over. wake up now.

I like the flaw in the Matrix, that they use human bodies to power things. However the human body consumes energy and produces less than it consumes so it wouldn't actually work.

Liked the article. Thanks!bigsmile

Does that mean I could go around killing whoever I wanted to, then go to the higher-level order and not care about what I did?

The way we live and behave affects everybody else.

You may not want to believe this and just live for the moment.

I understand that it's just a philosophical question, but if they get us nowhere why ask them?

Agreed. It's a pointless statement posing as a philosophical question though I think. Is it really supposed to make us 'think'? Think about what exactly? All it seems to be doing is sending people on wild goose chases. Philosophy is important, and inevitable, but this statement seems to me too over-radical to be taken seriously. It's just a load of FUD. If I didn't think statements like these took us a step backwards then I wouldn't be so irritated by it.

Not having a go at anyone here except the 'philosopher'...

thinking of 4th dimension .(for our consideration) comparing 3d with 2d. in 2d world, beings cannot get real understanding of 3d neither their own world.they would see only one part of realty.

Lee SuniPerception Friday, April 23, 2010 4:41:21 AM

Please keep an open mind. If you wish to learn something new you sometimes have to unlearn that which has been taught to you. Here is a quote from the Star Wars movie, maybe you will understand what i mean better if you read it.

Luke: " Is the dark side stronger?"

Yoda: "No, no, no. Quicker, easier, more seductive."

Luke: "But how am I to know the good side from the bad?"

Yoda: "You will know... when you are calm, at peace, passive. A Jedi

uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack."

Yoda: "So certain are you. Always with you it cannot be done. Hear you

nothing that I say?"

Yoda: "No! No different! Only different in your mind. You must unlearn what you have learned."

So, what is the matrix? The matrix is anything that blinds you into thinking that you are in control. You live your life thinking you are the one driving behind the wheel but in reality your just a passenger fallowing someone or something towards an uncertain end. Thanks to these ideas you become a blind follower who fails to listen to anything except that which you have already determined is the only possible reality, be that God or The Big Bang. Thanks to religion and science most people stop questioning and assume one or the other to be the absolute truth. The reality is that no one can prove how the world was really created because we didn't see it for our selves.

What is Reality? Reality is what you believe to be true. Reality does not change. The only thing that changes is our perspective of reality which keeps changing through time as we grow. To understand this better please study other cultures. I don't expect you to believe me but what I do expect you to do is to ask questions and eventually reach your own answers to those question. Example: Don't let someone else tell you what is in the bible read it for yourself by yourself and reach your own answers without influence from others because they will push their own agenda and their own way of thinking.

Always remember when you have question's Ask different people with different perspectives what they think. The best answer is found when you hear both sides of the argument one in favor and one against.

Just a short note to express my admiration and convey congrats to wabi-sabi, trip2space, Lee Sun for their enlightened perspectives on the 'Matrix' that I know beyond any shadow of doubt that we are all part of.

It requires a paradigm shift in thinking to move from our conditioned see-able, materialistic way of viewing the world and quite some time in research to become aware and fully grasp the reality of the non-reality that we've been educated for 1000s of years to believe is reality.

If I may suggest a good soft-landing or starting point are the following videos you'll find on You Tube:
A Quantum Leap! Trailer
A Conscious Universe - The Observer Effect
The Reality As You Know It Does Not Exist
...and there's plenty more you'll see listed like the above.

AND when you're ready to take that knowledge and go further I would suggest you subscribe to David Icke and all his voluminous research.

Final Note: "Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one. Our separation from each other is just an optical illusion of our consciousness mind. The separation between past, present, and future is only an illusion, although a convincing one". Albert Einstein

Cheers

The whole idea of living in a simulation relates to the Holographic Paradigm, otherwise known as the Holographic Universe theory. Look it up, it's an interesting read. Basically, its exactly like the Matrix, though it is an actual proven scientific fact. The only difference is, we do not have physical bodies outside the simulation, but we are merely consciousnesses living inside an enormous and intricately detailed hologram.

Hi
One way of the Matrix is to make you forget about it. When you are dipped in it you just dream all day. It's like going to a theatre to watch an endless movie. You beleive you are this man at this age doing this etc..
The second way of the Matrix, in case you ask too much questions, is to give you many confusing answers. Then the Matrix will confort you, telling you that you are right, good boy. As long as you play the game, and pay you movie's ticket.

The main objective of the Matrix is to keep you slave of it. You can become slave if you are made afraid (of sooo many things I let you think). But the best and strongest attraction of the Matrix is THE FIGHT. As long as you fight you are caught in the game. That is why on one side you got the corporations and on the other side the Unions. You are doomed both sides. same coin, marked dices.
It is not zion or Neo the Winner, it is the Matrix. Because remember, the Matrix is just a movie and the cog is real, he is you, the watcher...

One and best way to dissolve this ugly and painful system (Matrix - financial neo liberalism) is to stop feeding it. Don't fight, don't spend, don't cooperate. don't go to movies, don't watch TV, don't answer Posts like this.
Do as Gandhi did : active non cooperation!!!
gather with people of same interest. Build some communities, spend less, be savvy on fossil fuels. spread the word.
