Faster and more refined - Opera 10.60 alpha preview available!

, ,

Opera 10.60 alpha now available

Today a special preview of Opera is available that showcases an enhanced JavaScript engine, and some great UI improvements.

When we released Opera 10.50, we showed a tremendous increase in performance over previous versions of Opera, and made Opera the fastest browser on Earth. Our engineers have outdone themselves again, and Opera 10.60 shows a significant increase in Javascript performance over 10.50. This can be seen in benchmarks such as Peacekeeper (below).

Opera 10.60 alpha Peacekeeper results

You can see that there's an increase in performance here that is "no small potatoes"!

Also shown in Opera 10.60 are some great new enhancements to the user interface, such as:

  • A better looking, wide-screen Speed Dial. Better Speed Dial
  • Improved tab previews that blend smoothly into the user interface. Refined Tab Peek
  • A more visible Opera menu that makes it easier to find menu options. Easier-to-see Opera Menu
  • Custom icons in visual tabs for internal features. Custom Icons for Opera features

To ensure that we get a quality release as soon as possible, Opera 10.5x for Linux will not be released as final, and instead all new features and enhancements will be available in version 10.60. These include the removal of Qt dependency, improved KDE and Gnome skinning, private browsing, and much more. Also, we are committing to keeping releases for Windows, Mac, and Linux in sync so that they are available at the same time.

Try Opera 10.60 alpha now.

Remember that this is only an alpha, so it is recommended that you don't overwrite your existing installation of Opera in case something doesn't work perfectly for you.

Nice!!!

By the way, It would be nice if there was a portable version of Opera 10.60 alpha, to avoid installing... I think it is not hard to do

Witold Barylukmovax Tuesday, June 1, 2010 1:58:56 AM

What do you mean by wide-screen speeddial? On my Linux my 3x3 speeddial is very squarish, doesn't fill space nicly. 5x4 is much better, it fills completly and is pretty wide.

bligus balibligus Tuesday, June 1, 2010 2:25:32 AM

Great, I am waiting for stable version.

I already using 10.5 latest stable for a while now, I found that my website look consistent across major browser except opera.

is there guideline for webmaster to make web pages layout consistent as another browser, my be like "made for opera" guideline smile

will there be a way to keep the old toolbar type style across the top? the (file edit view bookmarks widgets tools help) thing spread out like that? someone tell me if that made no sence

We are referring to the thumbnails themselves. If you compare Opera 10.5x and 10.60 on a widescreen monitor, the preview thumbnails are wider in 10.60 and have less "padding" around them.

Yes, you always could easily switch back and forth between the Opera Menu and the traditional menu bar. Just open the menu, and click "Show menu bar" to toggle between the layouts.

Keep the fantastic improvements coming! Love the refreshing interface with the default speed dial background. This is even faster than Chromes laest dev build.

How do add back speed dial pages from opera 10.53 to this aplha version?
How do you add the bookmarks in 10.53 to this version?
How do you make the emails in 10.53 to this new version?!?!?!?

I really need help!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im just glad to see 10.6 will drop the same day. But im kinda RockStar954. opera is awesome but that "Opera 10.5 is the fastest browser on earth" argument does not hold up. loading pages there isnt much of a difference but chrome opens way faster. but then again i really dont close opera often so that really doesn't matter

What are you talking about? This blog post is about 10.60, not 10.50. Pay attention.

I love this new Opera, this Speed Dial now is great! up up

Thomas LeJeuneTJLeJeune Thursday, June 3, 2010 4:00:05 PM

I know the blog is about Opera 10.60. What im saying though is that opera made that same claim with opera 10.50 and if im not mistaken they also said that about 10.10. Believe me im not in anyway trying to knock opera. Im just saying opera has a habit of making claims that they can't live up too.

Running 10.6 alpha 64bit on ubuntu 10.04 64bit and getting constant crashes. Java won't work at all.

Ramasubramanian Krishnamurthiramasubbusk Thursday, June 3, 2010 9:00:57 PM

Kindly enable all the NPAPI plugins , even though it is from Microsoft. Make the Silverlight work with Opera.sad

Everything good with Opera except the plugins cry
(1) Silverlight doesn't work and crashes the browser.
(2) QuickTime Video flicks a lot while playing the video.

For more info on Silverlight : See http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=514191&t=1275599641&page=1#comment5717162

They did not say it about 10.10.

They did say it about 10.50, and it was TRUE. Multiple INDEPENDENT tests confirmed that.

Im just saying opera has a habit of making claims that they can't live up too.

Wrong. Their claims are perfectly justifiable. It is you who are making bogus claims based on your own ignorance.

Machisuji Friday, June 4, 2010 2:05:48 PM

That's really great and all, but when are we finally to see Opera 10.50 for Linux?

Thomas LeJeuneTJLeJeune Friday, June 4, 2010 5:34:55 PM

Opera 10.60 Alpha is already availible for linux

Thomas LeJeuneTJLeJeune Friday, June 4, 2010 5:59:46 PM

I just compared google chrome 5 and opera 10.6 with Peacekeeper and google chrome ranked higher. google chrome got 5087 while opera was only at 4656. And Chrome starts in about a third of the time opera 10.6 takes to starts. So how exactly am i making "Bogus claims based on my own ignorance". Opera 10.60 was about 11% faster with rendering pages which suprised me, but it tanked in the Data area. Im not sure why im arguing about a second or 2 anyways.

Machisuji Friday, June 4, 2010 8:56:51 PM

Thats great, too. But I would like to have a *stable* Opera 10.5+ for Linux.

Thomas LeJeuneTJLeJeune Friday, June 4, 2010 11:12:33 PM

im pretty sure they are just skipping 10.50

bit-junkie Saturday, June 5, 2010 2:05:03 PM

I love Opera, and speed is great and all, but how about focusing on better touchscreen support in Windows 7 and Linux, all the speed in the world doesn't mean a thing to me if I still have to use the scroll bar just to scroll the page up and down while in tablet mode on my Lenovo S10-3t. FF, IE and Chrome all work with page scrolling, but not Opera ?

So far Opera is nice, tryin it out on my Ubuntu machine. So far its pretty good, the install was pretty quick also the browser does move pretty quick. Hopefully they can make the mobile browser quicker, because on my BB the default browser is quicker than opera, and thats not good.

Elias EidRockStar954 Monday, June 7, 2010 6:48:54 AM

There were features in Opera 10.53 that aren't available in 10.60a on Windows 7 like when I open multiple tabs I can't switch between them using the taskbar's thumbnail preview !!!

Joseph D. Lienjdlien Monday, June 7, 2010 7:59:16 AM

Elias, that feature has been disabled by default now because it turned out that most users found that to be more annoying than helpful. You can turn it back on in preferences under advanced, tabs.

Chrome has more issues. If you love Chrome so much, why are you even spamming here?

3.I still think Chrome is FASTER

INDEPENDENT and VERIFIABLE tests prove that Opera is faster. Who cares what you think?

I have Opera 10.60 Alpha on Windows 7 x64 with Silverlight 4 installed. Opera doesn't detect the plugin I have to do manual file copy or registry tweak to make Silverlight loaded by Opera.
I don't have 32 bit windows to try there.
After doing all these, try visiting the site http://www.iis.net/media/experiencesmoothstreaming1080p Opera will simple crash.sad sad sad

mmm... Really? I'm confused. Why am I getting a message saying that my browser doesn't support DHTML?

I uploaded the image that says about this error, check out:

It is written in Portuguese, I'm from Brazil, but I'll translate for you: "Browser do not support DHTML"

I'm using Opera 10.53 portable...
