Opera 10.60 alpha now available

What is faster than the fastest? Today you can find out with the release of Opera 10.60, featuring a faster JavaScript engine, and many other great improvements.

Today you can experience being the first on the Web in features, speed, and innovation. Opera Software releases the final version of the 10.60 browser with several new features, more user security, and enhanced stability. It is now up to 50 percent faster than Opera 10.54 in various JavaScript tests, such as Peacekeeper (below).

Opera 10.60 features geolocation so that you can share your location with supported websites. If you allow it, Opera's location detection can determine your location by analyzing nearby wireless access points, so you don't even need a GPS! (GPS devices are also supported, if you have one).

Searching is faster and easier as you now can use search suggestions with the search field or search keywords to get search suggestions for selected providers. Currently this is supported for Wikipedia, Bing, and Yandex. We are working on adding other providers.

HTML 5 support is futhered in Opera 10.60, and AppCache now allows developers to make applications that will continue to work without Web access. The high-quality WebM video format is also now supported, making Opera one of the first to support this exciting technology in a final browser.

Also shown in Opera 10.60 are some great new enhancements to the user interface, such as:

  • A better looking, wide-screen Speed Dial. Better Speed Dial
  • Improved tab previews that blend smoothly into the user interface. Refined Tab Peek
  • A more visible Opera menu that makes it easier to find menu options. The original "O" menu can be enabled by right clicking the menu button, clicking Customize, Appearance..., and then selecting "Images only" from the Style listbox. Easier-to-see Opera Menu
  • Custom icons in visual tabs for internal features. Custom Icons for Opera features

In addition to all this, there are many stability, security, and performance improvements that make for a solid browser.

Wow, now it's fastest browser.

Ironically, the Opera download pages never work for me using the Opera browser, even when I "click here" if it hasn't started automatically. It always works fine on chrome, FF and IE; but to download from Opera I need to right click http://get4.opera.com/pub/opera/win/1060/en/Opera_1060_en_Setup.exe and save as a file...

(and no, I didn't want to search the forums before posting)

dizdizlexik Thursday, July 1, 2010 10:35:20 AM

Still there are few bugs, but I like it :>

petercotomoto Thursday, July 1, 2010 1:22:25 PM

you now can use search suggestions with the search field

I love this feature, so glad Opera now supports it.

Ray Taaffeuvray1 Thursday, July 1, 2010 7:47:48 PM

I want to love this browser. It's aesthetically pleasing to look at and fast overall. However, many pages are still not displaying properly (text, images). This has been a bug in previous builds and still remains so. But I haven't given up and hope this will be sorted out in the near future.

RoxasRoxaspro Thursday, July 1, 2010 9:03:13 PM

I Am a bit confused as to why I can't change the search engine off the speed dial? It has no other engine other then bing

Edit : Issue solved. Never mind

Ayush Mohanayushmohan Thursday, July 1, 2010 10:42:00 PM

hey facing same issue as Roxas could you help me out man....

Ayush Mohanayushmohan Thursday, July 1, 2010 10:46:00 PM

also..don't like the fact that the menu bar now has a huge "menu" pasted on it, it looked so much better and compact with just the opera logo also the alignment on the individual tab closing icon appears to be off the right half of the x doesn't seem to be supported which can be a bit of a nag also the large numbers and slightly stretched preview on the speed dial is not very pleasing
that said however these are minor visual bugs which are very puny compared to the efficiency of the browser otherwise...brilliant job *double thumbs up*

Ayush Mohanayushmohan Thursday, July 1, 2010 10:49:56 PM

sorry to be spelling the little niggles out like this but the location feature which is touted here as novel seems to be off, it indicates my location incorrectly although it s correct to within 15 kms dunno if that's the error range though....

Mark Halsteadmarkhalstead Friday, July 2, 2010 12:52:41 AM

Very happy to see this finally. The beta versions were frustrating me, but this seems to be working fine. I am becoming increasingly annoyed by the dependence on qt and am glad to see the move away.

Stephen Turrellstve10 Friday, July 2, 2010 1:09:31 AM

@Ayush "user locations are determined based on a combination of data from users' wifi access points and users' IP addresses."

I have no wifi & its out for me by about 10K

It is already updated.

Do not forgot also about new HTML5 features, like geolocation api, offline cache, web workers, webm support.

EDIT: I'm sorry. You already mentioned it. GREATE! Sorry. Bolding them could be appropriate wink

Thanks for your feedback Ayush.

If you read the section in my article about the Menu Button, it details how to change it back to the previous style.

Hmm... it is wider, but certainly not "stretched" into an incorrect aspect ratio. This lets you view a bigger thumbnail than before - how is that not pleasing?

How many speed dials does he have?

I have 3x7 on my netbook and on my other 21" notebook, suite's well I noticed the speed dial change I tell yah. (On a 10.54 snapshot - and I even reverted back to an old one just to see the difference bigsmile)

This is done from the "Manage Search Engines..." dialog, accessible from the search bar to the right of the address field. View the properties of the search engine that you would like to use, click "Details >>" and check "Use as Speed Dial Search engine".

Ramasubramanian Krishnamurthiramasubbusk Saturday, July 3, 2010 6:06:24 AM

This release has two regression when compared to 10.50 release.
http://sputnik.googlelabs.com/compare says 10.50 has 78 failures. But when I ran same on 10.60 in my laptop it has 80 failures. This means there is two regression on JavaScript compliance.

JaredpieRr0Ur Saturday, July 3, 2010 7:14:45 AM

On mine it only reported 74 failures.

Look here if available

Ayush Mohanayushmohan Saturday, July 3, 2010 4:38:27 PM

@Joseph: yeah i noticed how to change it back almost immediately after posting that, should've edited my comment, my bad smile. I dunno, my speed dial tabs do look slightly stretched into an incorrect aspect ratio, maybe i culd show you a screen shot or somenthing... also could you please look into the incorrect location problem, not that its life threatening but it would make a killer point to rub in the face of other browser users smile

@Stve10: I dunno I do have a wifi access point and in fact since i live in an apartment building at any given point of time I have 8 access points available....

Ayush Mohanayushmohan Saturday, July 3, 2010 4:41:12 PM

is anyone else experiencing the alignment trouble on the closing x icon on tabs, as i mentioned above? Cause its getting quite nagging now.... its like a parallax error

What was wrong with cookies in 10.50? I had no problems, siilary in 10.60. I'm constantly using Ask for cookies, or quickly disabled it using F12. Works perfectly fine.

I noticed this too, only the left half of the Tab close icon is clickable.

I had customised my icons on speed dial, where they were centered and fully visible before they are now stretched to left-right and only the top two thirds of each icon visible. Not nice!!

For those who have trouble getting some webpages to display properly try right clicking the page in question then 'Edit Site Preferences', click 'Network' tab and experiment with 'Mask as..' or 'Identify as...' IE/Firefox. This seems to cure most (not all) problems. The main issues I have are sites with javascript, e.g. some forums I use have javascript text editors which won't display at all in Opera so I have to use IE.

However, Opera is THE BEST browser by far!! Keep up the amazing work guys!! bigsmile

SUNNYSON2010 Monday, July 5, 2010 7:56:04 PM

10.60 THE LATEST WEB BROWSER IS REALLY FANTASTIC IN SPEED CONNECTION AS PROCLAIMED BY THE ORGANIZERS. WE ALL COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE THEM FOR FUTURE SUCCESS:

Thymvelialgr Thursday, July 8, 2010 2:31:52 PM

I have downloaded opera a few days from Linux Mint's repositories and i 'm impressed! You, Opera guys you have done an excellent job. 10.60 is fast, stable, i do like the changes in the layout (though i selected the O/ menu). Some very good new features, both eyecandy and useful... A significant better browsing experience. My only concern is that autocompletion in address field works only for "com" and "org" Unfortunately, "gr" doesnt show up (i ve tried through tools, preferences, advanced, etc)
In any case, well done!

Stephan Eberssystemix Friday, July 9, 2010 8:52:06 PM

Sorry, but I can't agree to the enthusiastic statements cocerning th speed of opera 10.60. I am using Ubuntu 10.04, when I start with a new session of Ubuntu and start opera, I feel using the acrobat reader instead of opera. It takes more than 10 seconds until the startpage appears. Afterwards, starting opera again it works fast. I am n ot sure, what is goin on there, but with opera 10.10 I could work with it from the beginning very quickly.
