Do you like Asus?

Asus is a major electronics company in Taiwan and you've likely used a lot of their stuff. But can you pronounce their name?

I've been a fan of Asus products for a long time. They make a lot of great stuff like laptops, motherboards, video cards, and other consumer electronics. But they have a name that is unfortunately awkward for most English-speakers to pronounce properly. The company has recently produced an ad that mocks this to great effect - one of the best electronics ads I've seen in a while bigsmile

This is pretty funny for me because one of my bosses was a huge fan of Asus smile

FYI, before I heard how to correctly pronounce "Ah-soos" around the time of the introduction of the original Eee PC, My friends and I tended to pronounce it "Ay-sys". How do you pronounce Asus?

lol very nice video, saw it yesterday and its good. I was a fan of ASUS but since a motherboard didnt support the advertised 4 GB and a monitor didnt stretched the video to the correct AR this made me sad

...if you can, save the money until you can choose a more reputable brand

It's even good in Urdu Asus.

Ali GrotkowskiAliKira Thursday, November 4, 2010 5:45:56 AM

Interesting! I do like this brand... but I mispronounced it Ay-sis instead of how it's supposed to be pronounced.

Khaled KhalilKhaled-Khalil Thursday, November 4, 2010 9:07:17 AM

i used to pronounce it asos, but i've never (till now) thought of it like it is ace OS (let it be ace, for moderation :), fortunately they don't make software.

i remember i've once read a forum thread asking each one how he pronounce Linux, answers varied around linoox, linox, linix, linax (french a), linyox & linex!
'u' usually causes confusion as of most of our english is learnt by reading rather than by hearing, even for native speakers they usually face new words, like brands in this case.
the letter 'u' should be standardized, we should hold a petition. isn't there a consortium for English to do what W3C does for HTML ?

Pretty girls can get away with pronouncing it asses , in fact it should be made compulsory for gorgeous girls but if an old ugly geezer like me tried I would probably get thrown in jail.

KalTauri Thursday, November 4, 2010 7:15:18 PM

I always pronounced it Ay-s-uh-s

Funfunguyx Thursday, November 4, 2010 7:23:45 PM

I love my ASUS. My ASUS are also on the small side, but they are most effective on the move.

bigdubs Friday, November 5, 2010 11:53:50 PM

ASUS is cool, though have bit of a rep for driving their workers hard back in Taiwan

First time my friend saw my new asus he was impressed but told me he had never heard of Snsv before (pronounced SssUnSssVer), I hadn't either, just caught it a bit upside down..

Soleedus Saturday, November 6, 2010 3:03:02 PM

ASUS makes great computer parts, without a doubt. I built mine straight-up from the ASUS components.

futan Saturday, November 6, 2010 11:14:48 PM

That's interesting. I always pronounced it ay-soos(close to how the guys in the video say is) but I thought it was actually pronounced ah-sis because on their website it says they got the name from Pegasus, which I pronounce Peg-ah-sis.

"ASUS comes from the last four letters of Pegasus, the winged horse in Greek mythology that represents the inspiration of art and learning. ASUS embodies the strength, creative spirit and purity symbolized by this regal and agile mythical creature, soaring to new heights of quality and innovation with each product it introduces to the market."

Asus? I'm hearing about them for the first time.

Fredrik KrohnOromis Thursday, November 11, 2010 1:12:56 PM

I've been running ASUS, Abit, and Iwill mainboards in whatever I have as a desktop for sometime. I have nothing against Taiwanese products, though I avoid mainland Chinese as I don't consider a Maoist 'government' legitimate.

The English default seems to be [ae]sus, based on the spelling. I'm aware it's acronymic, [ah]s[uo]s is just as valid but unlikely to be said in English. As far as adverts, I'm unlikely to see or pay attention to them as i see little difference between commercial adverts and lies.

Purpherals? LAWL

avoidz Saturday, November 20, 2010 7:17:16 AM

Since it's an awkward and unnatural-sounding word to us English speakers, we should just say it the way we feel most comfortable. For me, it's "Ay-s-uh-s" or "Ay-sys".
