Whats strange is that they are attacking a community with such a huge user base

They must be feeling pretty confident to give warning so far ahead of time.

Ummm... i don't see that much of a downside... The issues between Opera Mobile/Mini and facebook make it pretty much unusable for me.

Am I the only one that is looking forward to this?

Seriously, I understand what they are trying to achieve, and what they want to show people. I don't want Facebook making money off of me, and I'm sure many others don't, either.

Maybe not a DDoS. It would be too predictable, and that is not the style of Anonymous.

Considering how early this announcement is and that the company targeted is Facebook, they most likely spotted a huge hole in their code to exploit. My best guess is that they are going to use a back door attack.

EDIT: Though, for all we know, they could be preparing every single type of attack on Facebook.

My interpretation of a few choice statements.

"you will thank the rulers of the internet, we are not harming you but saving you."

-"benevolent" dictators who think they're doing the right thing...that sounds familiar...Mao (millions dead)...Stalin (millions dead)....Hitler (millions dead)...I'm seeing a trend here...Each professed a positive note, usually jobs, progress, freedom.

Also, I know how I want to live my life, I don't need to be saved (did they take a page from the book of religious fanatics?).

I don't see them controlling the mass media either. What does this mean? Bad publicity and tighter controls on the net. Fear among the population that their lives will be financially ruined. The not so private messages and data displayed for the world to see. I see no reason why non-tekkies won't react negatively to this and support greater regulation. Obama got the acta treaty from Bush, and is using the same lines that Bush used, it's about national security.

It just may be the 'twins' that lost rights to Facebook - they angry the courts didn't rule in their favor - so they set up a shutdown - then think they will make who unhappy - scare someone else - for they won't make me run in shout&awe - for the Facebook is just that - a place to 'keep in touch' - and if 'take it down' - it'll be right back up - while they catch - and send their butts to jail - as we merrily keep on chatting!

I would just bring up the fact that Anonymous in itself, isn't and organization. It's a decentralized structure, and everyone who says they're Anonymous, is Anonymous. More on topic, they are saving the people who use Facebook, if the Anons responsible for the raid plans to make it go through. I am sure many of you haven't even read the privacy statement (many, not everyone), and it is raping your rights. If half of the people that used Facebook actually read the privacy statement for the site, there would be far less people using it. Also, there is alternatives, and Diaspora (the one I'm using) is both open source, doesn't sell your privacy, and is decentralized as it uses P2P to connect to a wast network of other servers hosting it (register at one, befriend with another user on another server).

We are not criminals, let them sell the imformation but we stil need facebook as the leading means of social network interactions. Leave our facebook alone. Thanks

Because in all seriousness, time/money spent on Mafia Wars/Farmville/Dragons of Atlantis/etc are ruining the economy.

Go on and shut the damn thing down. It will only ruin the Facebook IPO scheduled for Q1-2012 and accelerate the shift to Google+.

As long as they dont release information from FB to the public, I couldn't care less. I dont use facebook that much, if it is gone, I can still interact with my FRIENDS. And theres always G+

I agree with Angel. I'm glad to see that there are some people that still truly fight for freedom, I don't care if a bunch of 13 year old girls will be forced to use a phone, or, god forbid, talk in person, instead of over Facebook for a few days.

Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. ( Okay and you are giving away private information that you have obtained illegally like they did but that is okay? Seems like a double standard to me.) Some of these so-clled whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria. (Well at least that means they have a job and in this economy that is pretty damn lucky.)

Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your "privacy" settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you "delete" your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. (This is kind of like what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas but most of us know that is not true as someone somewhere is taking pictures or recording things on their phones not realizing that can be catching a glimpse of lovers at a clandestine meeting.) Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more "private" is also a delusion.(Like changing your name to Mr. or Mrs. Jones when you sign in at a hotel with all the other signing in the same way.) Facebook knows more about you than your family. It is a battle for choice and informed consent.(And if my choice and others like me want you gone you will leave peacefully? Well why didn’t someone say that before? See how easy it is to solve things. When a service is "free," it really means they're making money off of you and your information. (As the old expression goes “Nothing is more costly that something that is given free of charge”. That includes freedom of any kind as there will always be some cost to it and not always monetary.)

Think for a while and prepare for a day that will go down in history. (There are MANY days that have went down in history and all of they have come at a cost of some kind, usually pain and sorrow are key elements involved.) November 5 2011, #opfacebook . Engaged.(Wait!! Engaged? When was I asked and who did the asking? No sorry this engagement is off!)

This is our world now. (Yes it is OUR world yet “you” are as bad as “them” dictating what is being done for the greater good.) We exist without nationality, without religious bias.(So now you are trying to change humanity and what makes us so uniquely different and roll us out like raw dough using the same stamp and live in a harmonious world where you have admitted “you” are doing this for our own good.) We have the right to not be surveilled, not be stalked, and not be used for profit. (We also have the right to form our own opinions and do as we please without having “big brother” look over our shoulder dictating to us.) We have the right to not live as slaves. (Oh silly we know that here in the USA as Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery. Okay and slavery is defined as, the condition of being subject to some influence or habit. So in that case that you as well are trying to make us slaves to you as you are trying to influence our outlook. Got it, you just want us to change “masters” so to speak yet call it freedom.)

I love the whole social awareness/hacktivism schtick, but the whole regurgitated platitudes and pseudo-intellectual memetics which reek of /b/ are a little much. Really this is a very good idea.....Facebook know you better than your family! I Support your attention to close facebook site, because why they keep our own information even if we delete our own Account. Facebook must delete Account to be no longer exist, not to keep it in their recycle bin. It support to be when a Facebooker delete his Account they must allow him to leave Facebook at all as he like to delete his own PC Software harm by virus to his PC by Pressing SHIFT+DELETE. In the next few days may be ROBBERS and HIGHKILLERS can use Facebook to track where can easily find where you are in order to beat their chance. I am not a paranoiac with the matter of anonymity and privacy on the net, but I am conscious that it is * my right * do not let others see what I write - for example - in an email or what I do or fail to do on the net: This is possible only if I enjoy the free will to do so.

Notwithstanding, this is impossible: The recent riots in Great Britain and the imprisonment of the alleged participants in the violence that took place there, have demonstrated the great hypocrisy of an "exemplary democracy" that has used 7 / 24/365 electronic surveillance and the appropriation of data of social networks and email services to persecute, imprison and accuse thousands of people.

It is obvious that the accused, guilty or not, would argue in their favor (and it is feasible to do so) that the electronic data collected by the police, the Secret Service and the British army are digitally manipulated, but the fact of the collection of data comes to demonstrate that the privacy and anonymity are cyber-myths fueled by the Establishment and the merchants of the web.

As I have observed - very worried - on the comments there are people who this matter do not mind, I would recommend them the reading of three insightful articles published in the most recent issue of * Technology Review *, a newsletter published by the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) :

At any rate, I'm American-born - Italian in ancestry. I am a member of Facebook, as well - my screen name is just the same as it is here, if you want to go off searching...
I fully realize the implications of using social networking sites, like the ones I've mentioned; however, one can say that the same thing can happen to anyone who surfs the Internet - regardless of different IPs, and proxies. If some entity really wants to find you through the Internet, they will - there are many hackers and crackers out there, who can make short work out of secure socket-layered URLs. I may not be Mr. Code Guy, but, I've been using the Internet since before the days of Mosaic, and Macintosh System 7 - when things were measured in mere baud rates - slower than Telex, in some instances. There are people out there who believe that paranoia is perfect awareness; however, I don't subscribe to that belief system. The Internet will end up policing itself, when all is said, and done - even if the group 'Anonymous' has acres of Cray supercomputers for servers. The USA is finally catching up with Europe as far as bandwidth is concerned, and yet, I still believe that the Internet is mankind's last bastion of true freedom of speech, and self-expression. Lighten up, already - with cloud-based architecture, things will be as safe as what we called Intranet. My two cents, as it were.
