Anonymous Threatens to "Kill Facebook"
By Joseph D. Lienjdlien. Wednesday, August 10, 2011 3:01:04 AM

The hacktivist group known as Anonymous is at it again! This time they are speaking out against Facebook and threatening to shut it down.
An announcement video posted recently on YouTube claims that Anonymous will "kill Facebook" on November 5th -- which is also known as Guy Fawkes Night in some countries. This is significant because Guy Fawkes has become something of a mascot for Anonymous.
Anonymous claims that Facebook has become seriously invasive and that the company sells information that could be used for not-so-nice purposes by government agencies. Due to this and other factors, they claim that they will somehow shut down the site.
I am assuming that by "kill Facebook" they simply mean that they are orchestrating a massive denial of service attack on the website that will make it inaccessible for some period between hours and days... although this could mean that they have discovered a more substantial vulnerability and can somehow delete data off their servers and such.
Although the claims of the invasion of privacy Facebook perpetrates may be somewhat overblown, this announcement, and the subsequent attack on November 5th (should it proceed) may serve to bring some of these issues to light, and could possibly even motivate companies like Facebook to exercise greater caution and stringency with how they handle user data.
A transcription of the announcement and the original video are below.

Attention citizens of the world,
We wish to get your attention, hoping you heed the warnings as follows:
Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed. If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill facebook for the sake of your own privacy.
Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria.
Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your "privacy" settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you "delete" your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more "private" is also a delusion. Facebook knows more about you than your family. http://www.physorg.com/news170614271.htmlhttp://itgrunts.com/2010/10/07/facebook-steals-numbers-and-data-from-your-iph....
You cannot hide from the reality in which you, the people of the internet, live in. Facebook is the opposite of the Antisec cause. You are not safe from them nor from any government. One day you will look back on this and realise what we have done here is right, you will thank the rulers of the internet, we are not harming you but saving you.
The riots are underway. It is not a battle over the future of privacy and publicity. It is a battle for choice and informed consent. It's unfolding because people are being raped, tickled, molested, and confused into doing things where they don't understand the consequences. Facebook keeps saying that it gives users choices, but that is completely false. It gives users the illusion of and hides the details away from them "for their own good" while they then make millions off of you. When a service is "free," it really means they're making money off of you and your information.
Think for a while and prepare for a day that will go down in history. November 5 2011, #opfacebook . Engaged.
This is our world now. We exist without nationality, without religious bias. We have the right to not be surveilled, not be stalked, and not be used for profit. We have the right to not live as slaves.
We are anonymous
We are legion
We do not forgive
We do not forget
Expect us

Seriously, I understand what they are trying to achieve, and what they want to show people. I don't want Facebook making money off of me, and I'm sure many others don't, either.

Considering how early this announcement is and that the company targeted is Facebook, they most likely spotted a huge hole in their code to exploit. My best guess is that they are going to use a back door attack.
EDIT: Though, for all we know, they could be preparing every single type of attack on Facebook.

"you will thank the rulers of the internet, we are not harming you but saving you."
-"benevolent" dictators who think they're doing the right thing...that sounds familiar...Mao (millions dead)...Stalin (millions dead)....Hitler (millions dead)...I'm seeing a trend here...Each professed a positive note, usually jobs, progress, freedom.
Also, I know how I want to live my life, I don't need to be saved (did they take a page from the book of religious fanatics?).
"We wish to get your attention" -got any chicks in your group who need attention? Maybe their daddies didn't love them or something?
"Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed"
do no use facebook so could care less. I value my privacy, and I don't see these super dooper hakzorz doing anything about the acta treaty except justifying it in the minds of the people who are not technologically proficient. Go for it zero cool. hack that f*c*ing gibson!
"It's unfolding because people are being raped, tickled, molested, and confused into doing things where they don't understand the consequences."
I concur with this statement, however, there's a story about the one-eyed man in the kingdom of the blind. He did not become king.
I don't see them controlling the mass media either. What does this mean? Bad publicity and tighter controls on the net. Fear among the population that their lives will be financially ruined. The not so private messages and data displayed for the world to see. I see no reason why non-tekkies won't react negatively to this and support greater regulation. Obama got the acta treaty from Bush, and is using the same lines that Bush used, it's about national security.
Build up that frenzy as anon/lulz are trying to do, and everyone gets boned because they need attention and to convert people, thus saving their soul...er saving them. To quote someone who is on the same intellectual level as anon/lulz...THATS HOTTT!

Because in all seriousness, time/money spent on Mafia Wars/Farmville/Dragons of Atlantis/etc are ruining the economy.
Go on and shut the damn thing down. It will only ruin the Facebook IPO scheduled for Q1-2012 and accelerate the shift to Google+.

Attention citizens of the world,
(Sounds like being addressed by someone from the movie Judge Dredd.)
We wish to get your attention, hoping you heed the warnings as follows:
(Okay out of curiosity you have the attention you seem to be seeking so desperately.)
Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed. (Well that is very presumptuous of “them” thinking everyone adores that medium… *whispers* excuse me but not everyone does.) If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill facebook for the sake of your own privacy. (So if you are not a”hacktivist” or a “guy” that means you are not allowed to join? Well isn’t that sexist of them.)
Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. ( Okay and you are giving away private information that you have obtained illegally like they did but that is okay? Seems like a double standard to me.) Some of these so-clled whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria. (Well at least that means they have a job and in this economy that is pretty damn lucky.)
Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your "privacy" settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you "delete" your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. (This is kind of like what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas but most of us know that is not true as someone somewhere is taking pictures or recording things on their phones not realizing that can be catching a glimpse of lovers at a clandestine meeting.) Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more "private" is also a delusion.(Like changing your name to Mr. or Mrs. Jones when you sign in at a hotel with all the other signing in the same way.) Facebook knows more about you than your family. (And here I thought those on Facebook were family as well, guess I will tell my sister unless she is on Facebook she will never know anything about me even though we have been together for over 20 years.) http://www.physorg.com/news170614271.htmlhttp://itgrunts.com/2010/10/07/facebook-steals-numbers-and-data-from-your-iph.... (If you do a search online you too with someone’s name can find out about them for the low price of $19.95 and if you act today you can find out about their criminal activity for free but you must pay a separate processing fee.)
You cannot hide from the reality in which you, the people of the internet, live in.(Okay so this is my reality now and here I was thinking it my fantasy. Now wait a darn sec!! Who are you to tell me that this is my reality and not my fantasy. Sounds like their “id” is being a bit pushy now.) Facebook is the opposite of the Antisec cause. (So many causes with so little time. Some start out sounding okay then slowly progress into a dictatorship and we are still oppressed but with a new slave master calling the shots. *sighs*) You are not safe from them nor from any government.(Okay no government. No rules to abide so that means we are going back to the lawless wild west days where money talks and any opposition is killed. Well isn’t that a promising thought, so much for progress.) One day you will look back on this (and shake our heads and with a look perplexed and say. “who are you talking about? I don’t remember them) and realise what we have done here is right, (at least to our way of thinking) you will thank the rulers of the internet (oh my they are just starting and already getting that god like complex and telling us what is right and wrong), we are not harming you but saving you (now wait I never asked to be saved and who will save us from the harm you are doing? Sounds like a dog chasing his tail to me.)
The riots are underway.(There will always be riots for those that believe in a cause, even if it is right or wrong.) It is not a battle over the future of privacy and publicity. (It’s not? Wait but you claim Facebook is invading our privacy. Okay I am confused now.) It is a battle for choice and informed consent.(And if my choice and others like me want you gone you will leave peacefully? Well why didn’t someone say that before? See how easy it is to solve things. You simply have to ask and it will be done. *looking completely amazed now*) It's unfolding because people are being raped, tickled, molested, and confused into doing things where they don't understand the consequences. (And of course this ONLY happens on the internet because we know in real life, meaning not on the internet, it is and peaches and roses and every so perfect.) Facebook keeps saying that it gives users choices, but that is completely false.(It is a choice to join it or not, so yes they do give a choice. It is your choice to join and give all that information as freely as you do.) It gives users the illusion of and hides the details away from them "for their own good" while they then make millions off of you. (Kind of like your group is doing it for “our own good” and only making hundreds instead of millions. Sounds like someone is jealous.) When a service is "free," it really means they're making money off of you and your information. (As the old expression goes “Nothing is more costly that something that is given free of charge”. That includes freedom of any kind as there will always be some cost to it and not always monetary.)
Think for a while and prepare for a day that will go down in history. (There are MANY days that have went down in history and all of they have come at a cost of some kind, usually pain and sorrow are key elements involved.) November 5 2011, #opfacebook . Engaged.(Wait!! Engaged? When was I asked and who did the asking? No sorry this engagement is off!)
This is our world now. (Yes it is OUR world yet “you” are as bad as “them” dictating what is being done for the greater good.) We exist without nationality, without religious bias.(So now you are trying to change humanity and what makes us so uniquely different and roll us out like raw dough using the same stamp and live in a harmonious world where you have admitted “you” are doing this for our own good.) We have the right to not be surveilled, not be stalked, and not be used for profit. (We also have the right to form our own opinions and do as we please without having “big brother” look over our shoulder dictating to us.) We have the right to not live as slaves. (Oh silly we know that here in the USA as Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery. Okay and slavery is defined as, the condition of being subject to some influence or habit. So in that case that you as well are trying to make us slaves to you as you are trying to influence our outlook. Got it, you just want us to change “masters” so to speak yet call it freedom.)
(Now to end this on that lovely Sci-fi note.)
We are anonymous
We are legion
We do not forgive
We do not forget
Expect us
(We are the Borg.
Lower your shields and surrender your ships.
We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own.
Your culture will adapt to service us.
Resistance is futile.)

It is not my intention to defend or attack Anonymou nor am I going to defend Facebook, a social network that I do not like and have not never sought. I just want to point out the following:
Experience has shown - remember Egypt? - that Internet disappears only when the servers shut down, and - unless you develop an encrypted and unassailable algorithm such that blocks the transmission of data without the need of the spam or denial of services, everything is made against a Web site is useless because, sooner or later, discovered the causes that impede its operations, redisplays its presence on the network.
I am not a paranoiac with the matter of anonymity and privacy on the net, but I am conscious that it is * my right * do not let others see what I write - for example - in an email or what I do or fail to do on the net: This is possible only if I enjoy the free will to do so.
Notwithstanding, this is impossible: The recent riots in Great Britain and the imprisonment of the alleged participants in the violence that took place there, have demonstrated the great hypocrisy of an "exemplary democracy" that has used 7 / 24/365 electronic surveillance and the appropriation of data of social networks and email services to persecute, imprison and accuse thousands of people.
It is obvious that the accused, guilty or not, would argue in their favor (and it is feasible to do so) that the electronic data collected by the police, the Secret Service and the British army are digitally manipulated, but the fact of the collection of data comes to demonstrate that the privacy and anonymity are cyber-myths fueled by the Establishment and the merchants of the web.
As I have observed - very worried - on the comments there are people who this matter do not mind, I would recommend them the reading of three insightful articles published in the most recent issue of * Technology Review *, a newsletter published by the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) :

At any rate, I'm American-born - Italian in ancestry. I am a member of Facebook, as well - my screen name is just the same as it is here, if you want to go off searching...
I fully realize the implications of using social networking sites, like the ones I've mentioned; however, one can say that the same thing can happen to anyone who surfs the Internet - regardless of different IPs, and proxies. If some entity really wants to find you through the Internet, they will - there are many hackers and crackers out there, who can make short work out of secure socket-layered URLs. I may not be Mr. Code Guy, but, I've been using the Internet since before the days of Mosaic, and Macintosh System 7 - when things were measured in mere baud rates - slower than Telex, in some instances. There are people out there who believe that paranoia is perfect awareness; however, I don't subscribe to that belief system. The Internet will end up policing itself, when all is said, and done - even if the group 'Anonymous' has acres of Cray supercomputers for servers. The USA is finally catching up with Europe as far as bandwidth is concerned, and yet, I still believe that the Internet is mankind's last bastion of true freedom of speech, and self-expression. Lighten up, already - with cloud-based architecture, things will be as safe as what we called Intranet. My two cents, as it were.
