All free Hotmail accounts to get POP access soon
Free POP access is now available on selected Hotmail accountsThe wait is over. On the 14th of January 2009, Microsoft has announced free Hotmail POP access for subscribers from some countries. The United States is not in the list and India is missing too but I suppose it's only a matter of time. Some time back, Microsoft had enabled POP access for Hotmail Plus users and now faced with intense competition from Gmail and (probably) hundreds of emails from loyal users, the company has finally given in.
FYI, the protocol used on Hotmail, now called Windows Live Hotmail, was changed to DeltaSynch from DAV (Distributed Authoring and Versioning) protocol around the middle of last year (2008). The availability of POP (Post Office Protocol) for accessing Hotmail emails shows Microsoft is finally pulling up its socks and becoming wiser when faced with stiff competition.
Free Hotmail POP availability
At the time of writing free Hotmail POP access is available only to subscribers of United Kingdom, Canada, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan and Australia. And Microsoft has promised that they "be rolling POP3 out to more parts of the world later this year". Hurray!
A big congratulations to all you lucky subscribers; here are details you would need to configure email programs:
* Username: Your full Hotmail email address.
* Password: The one you use to access your online account (... what else?)
* Incoming POP server: pop3.live.com
* Incoming POP server port number: 995
* SSL required for incoming server: Yes
* Outgoing server address: smtp.live.com - Port 25
* Authentication required?: Yes
* TLS/SSL required? Yes
Hotmail and Windows Live Mail email client
Before the availability of POP access, Hotmail could setup on Windows Live Mail, the new email program from Microsoft. But now, one can now get Hotmail emails on any POP enabled email client and even mobile phones (I'm waiting to configure it on my iPhone). Read more about the new way to get Hotmail emails.
