But that's just me.
* Okay, so this begs the question, would you give a brand new Nokia to someone so they could turn around and feed it to their dog?

*edit- I see insert_nick automaticall won! great!
Classic was the most amusing... but I think it was not to the spirit of the contest as my previous posters noted. I went with "Shopping" as that's exactly what I'd use it for if I had it.

All these animals with a 770... Why?

I share the same opinion. The rules said you had to print a picture of the thing and show how YOU would use it. The image/video/whatever also had to include the Opera logo on the display of the Nokia 770.
Some entries (of all the submissions, not only the finalists) used game screenshots and some used stock photos to create something that looks more like an ad (publicity). And I saw some without the Opera logo on the display or completely without the logo.
I don't see how a dog or a turtle would use the device. And I can't even imagine how I could use it as toilet paper.
I know it is supposed to be fun. Some people have been really creative, but if you established rules I guess you had to stick to them cause that's what some people (including me) tried to do with their entries. People should have been creative within the limits of the rules and the judges should have chosen the finalists based on the rules. I'm a little disappointed.
BTW: too many dogs in my opinion.

Honestly, by "you"... do you always think of the "here and now", no.. you are allowed to imagine, allowed to think with some imagination. What you, my friends are doing, is being critical... and for what reason? I cant see a valid one.
Two of my entries did cross over the lines that you have argued about, however... would you rather have submissions that are boring and dull, people sitting at their desks using it? no, you want fun and amusing ones. I tried to allow for an interesting, imaginative selection. Do you want everything done with surgical precision, hard rules, and no lee-way?? No, thats not art.
So please, be a bit mature in respects to judging, go with what catches the eye, and is clever... what appeals to you.

Sorry, but my dog is not going to use the Nokia. She just wants me to take her to the park. She may spend some great time there while I am still online!

The major point, I suppose, is that the entries were produced by the community and displayed publicly for all to see. We support whatever direction they chose to follow, as long as it was within reason. If you believe more credit should be given to those that followed the rules more strictly, we're happy to see you voice your opinion and vote for those that had (Lounging and Brightscreen in particular).
If anyone would like to discuss our choices or voice their opinions privately, I always have an open ear (or eyes, as it were). You're welcomed to private message me here on My Opera, or drop me an email (brianj [at] opera [dot] com).
An excellent job by all those that participated, and good luck to the finalists.
Cheers,
Brian

I think you might be misinterpreting the image. The dog is holding it for the person to use "hands free". Opera folks put their own caption on it, as did they on all of the images.

E-paper was just something that formed while playing with the idea of "print a life size image on paper" rule.
Anyways,I have to give it to the "Shopping". It is a cool idea. Deserves the big prize.
What really bothered me is that, "Counter-Strike" did not make it to the finals. It was brilliant!

What we had in "rules":
To kick off the release of Opera's debut on the Nokia 770, we're giving away two of these cool little gadgets.
So, did we suppose to "advertize" Opera browser or Nokia 770 Internet Tablet device? I got it as we need to imagine how to use internet which is main purpose of this device.Show us how you would use the device if you had the real thing.
Despite that insert_nick has really funny submission, I didn't understand how insert_nick's submission connected to internet (browser) at all. Furthermore, as I know Nokia 770 doesn't have preinstalled "Paintbrush" application... So, how you can draw a heart?
Sorry for my ugly English.

Yeah! It was great one,
Thank you for a vote. And I like your "Bright Screen"...

So, what did you mean with your submission?Heheh, the Counter-Strike one was mine, and it had a few issues, which some users decided to comment (PC'ness, Copyrights, No Opera sign) about, so I understand why it was decided against... so my entery is the "Classic" one, I didnt expect it to get to finals, so I didnt add text or anything, so it looks pretty strange
Also, I have add under every finalist's picture a comment with "name" of submission that connected to poll... for your convinience.

The idea was to show that you would have jealous looks and stuff from friends. Using "The Creation Of Adam", In the real world, the picture is meant to show God giving life to Adam, and in my version its meant to show God giving Adam a 770. But dont take it as some religious thing, I have great respect for that kind of thing, and dont feel that it is insulting.
Anyway, if you can understand my strange idea... you will see why I didnt enter words in a hurry, as they could be viewed in another light/way. Anyway It looks pretty cool so I dont mind it not really having a message.
Ohh, after all of that, yeah it doesnt really show how you would use one, besides that one of them was viewing the Opera Community portal
But then again, all of the others are just showing you surfing pages that are pretty unrelated

Anyway, if I were judge, I would select Counter Strice one as one of finalists, not Classic one. You did 3 submissions, right?

Still, if you want to vote for me, the white puppy chewing on the Nokia, please feel free to do so. I really want to chew the real stuff, I bet it tastes sweet.
As for future contests I propose we all unleash our creativity. Life is too black & white with too many shades of gray to not allow ourselves to have a bit more fun.

Ohh, yeah did the CS one, the Opera-Naut and Classic
One was a road sign (2 roads, 1 sign), with the road names changed to "Seems that" "you'r lost", and a 770 with a map site open on the co-ords
Another with me in bed with a vacant spot next to me, and me surfing a "Mail-order bride" site... that one was a bit... dodgey
And one that was meant to be a REALLY REALLY old brick phone dialing "The Internet"... This phone may pre-date the dinosaurs
If I get some time Ill put them up for fun

I'm the "Bungee" creator - it's fun just to be a finalist - in fact, I like much more my "Parachute" draw and think the "Star Wars/r2d2 (or n770)" more creative. But be a finalist is very cool.
I think this:
Dog Food (well made, but weird)
Lounging (correct rules, but boring)
Fast News (interesting, but strange)
Chew Toy (sorry dude)
Bungee (I can't comment, but it's what I make better - drawing)
Turtle's Home (out of rules, but funny)
Shopping (amazing)
Cooking (very good)
Alien (sorry dude)
e-paper (funny, but strange)
Classic (very good idea but a cliché)
Jealousy (good idea, but very ugly - don't need the man pic)
Walk in the park (funny but ugly)
Bright screen (good)
Good Luck
OBS.: Brasileiros, votem em mim!!!! Brincadeira, mas agradeceria se comentassem o que acharam das ilustrações. Ainda estou preparando o Photo Album.

I'm the creator of "Dog Food", and must say I was very happy to see that I made the finalist page -- it's my version of a totally hands free, wireless connectivity experience! That's my dobermann that I enjoy training and who I trained to quietly hold the Nokia without mouthing it or spitting it out. If I win, he could really hold it for me.
I've never won anything before, so if I win this Nokia, it will be a first and a great prize. Thanks to those who have voted for me so far, and those that have not yet voted, please [insert appropriate beg for votes here
And thanks, Opera, for having this contest!
Cheers!

-------------------------
Danielcs,
no problem - what interest is that you had voted in your most apreciate one.
I'm just joking, but that was a nice - because you know how dificult is the life to brazilian people...!
... interesting is that I didn't notice this: I make birth this month (january, 25) - so, it would be a great gift, wouldn't?!
I wish that you had liked some of my illustrations.

Bungee - nice, but not the best.
Classic - hm, its an old idea, and its already used many times (nokia used it too in splashscreen), so i cant understand why that work have a second place...
Shopping - best work! very creative and funny!

First, the guy won Times Square contest, because judges could not resist his "love story".
Q. Do you know the next slogan for Opera promotion?
A. Yes, "Good luck with the girl!"
It is silly, guys. You are a serious company. You can't show "thAt" on Times Square.
And now Who wins the first Nokia? The guy who will use it for drawing red hearts in bars, dreaming to find the "right" girl. Why did he win? Because Opera will use his picture next year on Times Square. Yes, with the girl, of course!
Now you set rules and than change it. Why? If someone didn't follow the rule, that is their problem. If you a a true winner, you'll create a masterpiece, according to the rules. The painting, which was used for Classic (which is boring, in my opinion) is magnificent, but it was created by rules. Rules of composition, colors and era, it was created in. If someone is gifted, he'd create "a real thing", according to the rules.
Opera-guys, you have the best browser, but, PLEASE, hire a PR-manager or Opera Community will become an Oprah show with a cool browser.
Oh, my vote goes to Shopping. Great work!

The instant-winner of the 770 wasn't because it was a "love story", but rather it obviously took a lot of effort to make. This, along with the fact that a screenshot of his entry didn't do it justice, we were afraid his creative efforts would have gone unnoticed. He could have written a story about how he wants to become a ninja, or how he likes dinosaurs - the subject didn't matter. We liked the way he put it together and used his imagination. As posted earlier in this thread, we work hard to make the community fun and welcoming to everyone. If you have any feedback, suggestions, complaints, stories about your mother's cooking, whatever - you (and anyone else) are always welcome to contact me.

Also, I slightly updated text layout on my Shopping picture, to shift accent to word "site". So, now from the first sight viewer can gets that I'm talking about internet abilities of device.

Forget the just like a real ad glamour of shopping, the monumentally done to death classic, the inevitable doggie drool of dog food, and I think Lounging is the winner!!!
I appreciate this extensively. The picture explains exactly how I would use it and simply put, I would spend hours in bed on the 770. Also when I made my entry I took into account that the 770 uses wifi and most places, like stores, don't have open wifi for people to use. The caption that originally went with the picture was "So much internet...just can't sleep!"
