Have been using Beta 3 for about a week now and I'm pleased to say that most of my original concerns have been solved server side. In fact I'm very impressed by the speed with which Opera sorted out these issues.
It seems to me that Opera Mini 4 is very close to a proper release, the OM Blog hints it could be by the end of the year. Hopefully, there will be some small speed increases when beta specific code is removed.

Gmail Mobile App v1.5 - The Solution!

In my trawls around the web, I cam across this problem but relating to installing themes. Seems some of these are signed with "expired" ceritficates. The workaround is to set the date on the phone to a year ago (or longer).
I tried this with Gmail, and it worked!
My initial thoughts are that it is a big improvement. It is much quicker and smoother. It knows my phone has no numeric keypad and the shortcuts are letters eg. Y to archive.
This gave me the idea to suggest this to Opera for Opera Mini, as at the moment I have to press function then 1 to open the context menu etc.
I tried this with Gmail, and it worked!

Opera Mini Beta 3

Opera Mini Beta 3 is here, with a feature list that looks exciting. Being eager to test it out I downloaded it straight to my Nokia E61. It seemed to install ok, however when I ran it I got a message asking me to wait whilst it collected font information. (A message I had not seen in previous versions)
When the progress bar reached 90% the screen cleared and gave a "Failed to Connect to Internet" message. I clicked ok and the app closed! I ran it again, this time it got 75% through installing and got stuck. After waiting fifteen minutes it hadn't re-started so I closed the app.
I uninstalled it, turned off the phone for a few minutes and tried again. This time there was no font message and it worked well.
I've been experimenting with it and have mixed feelings.
Being able to synchronise with My Opera is a good idea, but I find the implementation awkward to use.
The layout on screen seems to be less accurate than in previous betas and 3.1 (For example, some sites render with a white border on left and right side, content folding seems to force text to black which means it won't show up on a dark background.)
Picture quality has been drastically improved.
My Opera forums have the ends of the lines missing, which means much scrolling back and forth. This is reported as a problem with the stylesheet.
I am impressed that a bug I reported has already been fixed.

Earlier this week I discovered that Google had released a new version of their Gmail Mobile java app. I eagerly downloaded it onto my Nokia E61, only to get "Certificate Error, contact application supplier".
This would only normally happen if the phone had been set to only allow signed apps, so checking my settings I was puzzled to see that signed apps checking was turned off. I next checked the date and time on the phone. If this is wrong, it will stop an app installing. But it was ok.
Scratching my head, I checked the Gmail help pages and found the Gmail Mobile Apps help group on google groups. Seems like I wasn't the only one having this problem. I posted, but got no reply.
Checking the Gmail help pages again, I discovered that the phone has to have a certain Verisign certificate. Thinking I had solved the problem, I looked at the installed certificates to find it was already there.
I then decided to contact Google, filling out the form on the Help pages. (Which to get to you have to go through interminable options designed to put you off). They replied quite quickly, thanking me for me question, but saying they couldn't offer help outside the US. But the app can be downloaded from the google.co.uk mobile site.
So I have given in, and my question is when did Google become like Microsoft.
