999 years of our Capital city

In 1010, Lý Thái Tổ, the first ruler of the Lý Dynasty, moved the capital of Đại Việt ( the Great Viet, then the name of Vietnam) to the site of the Đại La Citadel. Claiming to have seen a dragon ascending the Red River, he renamed it Thăng Long (Ascending dragon) - a name still used poetically to this day.
t remained the capital of Vietnam until 1397, when the capital was moved to Thanh Hóa, also known as Tây Đô ( Western Capital). Thăng Long then became Đông Đô ( Eastern Capital).
In 1408, Vietnam was invaded by Chinese troops from the Ming Dynasty and Đông Đô was renamed Đông Quan ( Eastern Gateway) by the Chinese. In 1428, Vietnam was liberated from Chinese rule by Lê Lợi, the founder of the Le Dynasty and Đông Quan was renamed Đông Kinh ( Eastern Capital ).
In the XIX century, Nguyen Dynasty moved capital to Hue and renamed Đông Kinh as Hà Nội

In 1882: french Colonist invaded HaNoi
In 1954: Hanoi was liberated by Communist of Vietnam.
In 1966-1968: American air force started to bomb Hanoi
In 1972: Nixon decided to bomb Hanoi again with his aim to make North Vietnam return to Stone Age but he lose. Many of B52 were failed. Then the US had get out of Vietnam

Our capital has a long history and it's really a heroic capital city

Ha Noi is ancient and peace. Ho Chi Minh city is modern and diverse. Da Nang is wild and cool with sea and beach.

Thomas Clothier 15. October 2009, 00:19

I visited Hà Nội in August. The mood of people struck me as so peaceful and friendly. Even though working life is so hard, people cherish a love and family as a kind of center of their hearts. Even with a thunder storm approaching, people continued oblivious of the threatening shower, to enjoy the night in near Hoan Kiem. I look forward to visiting the other great places very soon.

Thank you for such an informative article.

Danang is a small city. I've never been to Danang, but I can feel it is one of the most easy cities to live.

Phan The Hieu 15. October 2009, 14:17

some great photos billy,,a turbulent History has Vietnam, but have come through it with pride, and it says much about the Vietnamese people about their resolve to overcome what at times seems unsurmountable odds.

Thomas Clothier 19. October 2009, 01:40

forgive my ignorance, but there's a restaurant on the edge of Hoan Kiem lake (perhaps on the north side). Is it named after the leader Lý Thái Tổ?

Phan The Hieu 19. October 2009, 03:55

I've never been to Hanoi so I don't know. Ask Narukami who lives in Hanoi for more information :D

I love that little building on the island.

Phan The Hieu 8. November 2009, 03:29

It's call Turtle Tower, built in the 19th Century

Edward Piercy 8. November 2009, 03:31

Wow, I love turtles.

Thank you.

.:. + .:. Phoenix .:. + .:. 8. November 2009, 09:16

According to the old papers, they said there were a bridge (or something like that :left: ) so that people can come to the Turtle Tower.

But after a few years it was gone, by something that I don't remember. lol
