Evolution!

Help! I think my phone is evolving! :insane:.

My phone has learnt a new trick! :left:.
It's happened twice now and I don't know why! Every morning at 4am, the alarm buzzes. Nothing unusuall about that, it's supposed to do that 'cos that's what it's programmed to do. :left:. But when I press the 'ok' button to turn the alarm off, a strange thing happens. The last application That I was using comes on. :insane:. Usually, that's Operamini 3.1 although sometimes it's Operamini 4.2 .
Even stranger is that it starts up with the last page that I was on. :insane:. I'm starting to wonder whether this is somehow related to Operamini sometimes not working.. I think that, because I use socket connection mode, Operamini fails to shut down completely when I exit. Perhaps it just continues running in the background, keeping the socket open. When I launch it again, the first one that's open is still running in the background and hogging the socket. My phone has partial support for running apps in the background. If I recieve a call whilst online, Operamini will go to background whilst I answer the call. But it exits completely when downloading. :irked:. There is also no resume function documented. and this latest trick is undocumented. This might partially explain why MMS has stopped working and why Emails can still be sent, but retrieving recieved emails won't work.. I wish I could get a firmware update, or at least, find a way to tweak the existing firmware. awww

That's beyond bizarre. :eyes: Ghost in the machine. :left:

You could try clearing the memory by rebooting the phone before sleeping.

You might find some unofficial firmware updates for your phone on the web though.

So ... you could find a landline and call your mobile phone number while you're downloading to keep everything from exiting?

(I know nothing about phone browsing, of course ... ).

Cois 14. December 2008, 08:55

When you download and get a call your connection will be interrupted and will start downloading from the start again..
My phone exits for no reason at all sometimes which gets annoying but I think its due to no RAM available..
Boost this by taking out battery for a couple of minutes. You can see the boost if you use Handy Taskman as a application..

Never had a app come on without ordered to :eyes: see if this still happens after clearing cache and/or removing battery for couple of minutes before you turn in..

qlue 14. December 2008, 11:58

What I really need to do is find out how to hack the bloody phone. :irked:. It only has a jm2e environment for java apps. No fancy stuff. I know it's a firmware glitch, I just don't know how to rectify it. awww.
Still looking for another phone though. It's hard to choose a phone when all the ID10T behind the counter will show you is a plastic mockup of a phone that costs almost as much as a car. :insane:.

qlue 14. December 2008, 12:06

Of course, I've used the factory reset before. But that doesn't update the firmware. That's what It needs but LG stopped issuing firmware updates the day after they stopped making these things. :left:.

lokutus_prime 14. December 2008, 15:18

Try a Nokia - they seem to have a good reputation for performance and that company sells more mobiles than anyone else. Good luck with solving your problem.

What bugs me about mobile phone sales in South Africa is this tendency to try and coerce the customer into buying and overpriced yuppie toy. There is no option to test drive the device before purchase and no after sales support. Most of the 'must have' features are redundant for me and don't make any sense anyway. For example, why would you need a built in FM reciever in a phone? Any decent phone is capable of audio streaming and most decent FM radio stations have a media streaming site. The same thing holds for built in tv reciever phones. Video streaming is way more usefull. My current phone has two memo pads, a calender, a to do list and a host of other features that I don't use. The features, such as video streaming, that are supposedly supported by my phone, are not compatible with South African networks as they only support thier own custom video streaming via the vlive proxy. (for Vodacom, aka vodafone.)
Thus, in order to recieve video streams, you need a vodafone handset. Vodacom's customer support is worse than pathetic. Thier staff don't even know what an apn is. Now I don't expect the ordinary man (or woman) in the street to know that, but if it's your job to give technicall support to people that use a device that requires an apn, surely you should at least know what one is?
Yeah, I realise that I'm ranting, but it's frustrating to know the potentiall of current technology just to be blocked by corporate bureaucracy. :irked:.
They argue that they are merely selling what the customer wants. But I am the customer. I know what I want and it's not the load of BS that they're trying to cram down my throat!. The average customer would want much the same things that I want if it was marketed to them. But as the saying goes, "Ignorance is bliss but it's folly to be wise!"
So in the words of Charlie Brown, "Aaaargh!": bye

Ok, I cannot believe you are actually confused about this. This is simple!!! It is your phone! It is getting fucking pissed off because you set the alarm to go off at 4am. Damn what do you expect?

qlue 15. December 2008, 06:28

To wake up at 4am?:lol:

lokutus_prime 15. December 2008, 17:04

Dear Siyafunda,

If you expect
a mobile phone
to wake you,
when you're
on your own,
then you expect
too much from
this technology.
It's not as evolved
as you, you see? :D
Why use a phone
as an alarm setter?
A digital clock
would be far better!
Use each gadget
for its proven task,
and you won't
growl and scowl, :D
or have to ask
why it is
this mobile phone
behaves that way
- then you will not
feel fed up, and that
alone must make
a better day. :D

Alarm clocks and I don't get along. They are unreliable. Besides, this is just a wierd new trick that my phone has learnt. It still does what it's meant to do, it just seems to have learn't that I only use it to Blog with..
I didn't know that mobiles were capable of learning by themselves now.
Wait, :left:. Maybe that's why LG discontinued this model! :eyes:. I hope my phone doesn't pull a Steven King on me! :insane:.

lokutus_prime 15. December 2008, 18:32

" "I hope my phone doesn't pull a Steven King on me! .

But if it does then perhaps you could buy a better one
from a shop called "Needful Things" :left:

:eyes:

qlue 15. December 2008, 18:58

I'm thinking about the murderous car. (I can't seem to remember her name?).
Yes, that shop does have some interesting goods. :left:.
His best book though, has got to be, "Through The Eyes Of The Dragon"

Cois 15. December 2008, 19:47

Hmmm 'from a buick 8?'..
Check out Cell by King :insane: it's actually very freaky especially as a frequent mobile user :insane:

qlue 15. December 2008, 22:57

You don't happen to have copy to send to of do ya?
Not many bookshops in the middle of a sugarcane field.

lokutus_prime 16. December 2008, 00:21

" His best book though, has got to be, "Through The Eyes Of The Dragon""

His best book, in seven parts, has got to be, "The Dark Tower"

Cois 16. December 2008, 00:53

No copy unfortunately.. But i'll keep my eyes open at the little store here as it stocks up at the most reasonable prices..
I haven't read "The Dark Tower" yet. Googled it and gonna see if I can find anything..
Bag of Bones is, for me at least, his worst book..

lokutus_prime 16. December 2008, 01:07

I have all of it in my personal library, and I also have Part 1 & 2 of the Graphic Novel publication, depicting "The Dark Tower" story, (truly brilliant coloring, inking and drawings and script) that are specially produced in collaboration with Steven King. Further parts are produced at the rate of one each year, until all seven exist in Graphic Novel format.

Cois 16. December 2008, 01:11

I must really try and get my hands on any of these :D think it too late to suggest christmas presents

lokutus_prime 16. December 2008, 13:35

Hope you can get the Book, parts 1-7 are each in single books, but as King explains the entire story is one story and he suggests readers should start at the beginning (there's a foreward/preamble in each part).

Here are the part sub-titles, all under the heading of "The Dark Tower"

Book 1 -The Gunslinger
Book 2 -The Drawing of The Three
Book 3 -The Waste Lands
Book 4 -Wizard and Glass
Book 5 -Wolves of The Calla
Book 6 -Song of Susannah
Book 7 -The Dark Tower

Cois 16. December 2008, 21:40

That's what i got when googling for full list of King books .
Seems it's harder to come by in these small towns as the librarian didn't even know what I was talking about  the bookstore delivered nothing and the woman doesn't get new stock for another 2 months Homer: Doh! i'll just let my brother order something as he's got a good deal with books..

qlue 17. December 2008, 05:53

You don't know what a small town is yet. :left:.
When your next door neighbour is a sugarcane field then you live in a small town.

MConor 17. December 2008, 20:16

Ghost in the machine, defo. And the only cure for a ghost in the machine is to format your phone.... and sometimes even that doesn't work!

Ghosts in the machine are prove that we are messing with stuff we dont fully understand.... and mayeb that computers and such aren't as lifeless as they appear...... :left: :right:

Cois 17. December 2008, 21:23

qlue 18. December 2008, 00:23
