I am a racist.

, , , , ,

I happened upon a thread of comments that had morphed into a discussion on racism. I was typing my own response when it occured to me that it was, in and of itself, worthy of it's own dedicated post. So here it is
acknowledgements to Angeliki

So much already said, so much more to say. awww.
Firstly, I'm a racist. I try not to be, but I know I am. Yet, when I look around me at everyone I know in real life, I'm the least racist person I know! :insane:.
In today's society, multiracial marriages are becoming more common. Let me tell you from personall experience that a multiracial marriage is not an easy road to walk. The difficulty comes from the prejudice of the people around us. awww. I never knew how racist my own family was untill I met and married a woman of Indian descent. There, for the first time, was all the prejudice and wrong thinking of my family exposed. It was an eye-opener for me to see how a thing as insignificant as a mindset could impair the rational thoughts of an otherwise intelligent human being. I've always eaten chicken with my fingers and I cannot imagine how one would manage a chicken wing or drumstick with a knife and fork. Yet, on visiting my brother, I was once reprimanded for not using my knife and fork to eat a piece of chicken. I was told that I'm, 'a white man' not 'an indian' and that a 'white man' uses a knife and fork. :left:. It is this kind of irrational reaction that makes inter-racial anything extremely difficult. No matter how someone is raised, it seems that some residual prejudice is inherently absorbed from our surroundings. I, for one, do not understand it. It's not like it's natural, but it grows there, deep within us like a weed. And like a weed, it just takes one seed. awww.
I am a racist. I'm not proud of it, and I try not to be, but the seed is there and all I can do now, is weed the garden as often as possible. awww.

The first trip towards improving your mistakes are admitting them....

qlue 8. January 2009, 08:29

This is true. Acknowledging ones faults is a prerequisite to rectifying them.

Dacotah 8. January 2009, 09:21

Brave post qlue.

rose-marie 8. January 2009, 09:26

From your description, I wouldn't call you a racist - maybe prejudiced... but then - everybody is prejudiced in one way or another.

BabyJay99 8. January 2009, 09:36

Yes a very brave post.

Spaggyj 8. January 2009, 09:57

Everyone is prejudiced to some form. Me, I can't tolerate the Scottish. *shrugs*

ellinidata 8. January 2009, 14:04

qlue 8. January 2009, 18:14

Yes, we can bring change. As long as we're willing to start with ourselves first..

ellinidata 8. January 2009, 19:56

*no political message intended*

yes we can

angel292005 8. January 2009, 22:38

Some things are better left unsaid.

I am sure you will eventually learn that in the blogging world.

qlue 8. January 2009, 22:55

We can hide from the world... but we cannot hide from ourselves.

ellinidata 8. January 2009, 23:38

seeing what we have in our heart and mind will bring us together and solve problems that many pretend they do not exist and throw them under the carpet. We are all human placed on earth by God for a purpose,
it is unthinkable that we are brain washed from infancy and it takes hard work and honesty to correct things that are so wrong!

angel292005 9. January 2009, 16:49

I suppose each of us have our own learning experience in life. But things like this are common sense. I just wish more people had common sense.

Ellinidata....

seeing what we have in our heart and mind will bring us together and solve problems that many pretend they do not exist and throw them under the carpet

You honestly think that will ever happen?

ellinidata 9. January 2009, 18:53

Sarah,
If I ever loose hope,
please kill me.Life will not be worth living .

Good job bud.

Everyone has their "racist" side or belief system and if they tell you other wises they have just not understood it in those words... Weather it is thinking they are smarter, stronger, better, whiter, darker, richer, poorer, it doesnt really matter it is all the same thing.

My dislikes are much simplier. Everyone.

qlue 9. January 2009, 20:46

It certainly makes your life far less complicated.

ripp2002 9. January 2009, 20:53

racism for dummies by Ripp

angel292005 9. January 2009, 23:28

LC, you are racist...I have seen your comments BUD.

Angeliki, Thanks.. We have 'met' before. I remember you. But you seem just a little too optimistic. Must be God in you, that is the only way that I can explain it. I have been married and in a successful interracial relationship for going on 14 years now. I hope one day to say 20, 25 and 30 and 40 or beyond! I don't care, as long as I am with him. We live in north central Texas. :faint: He is from California and me from North Carolina. I wasn't raised to be racist...but he was...surprisingly. The only thing that keeps us together is him knowing that I am an Enriquez. I may LOOK like a white women...but am sort of not! Surprise!

Anyway...I DON'T THINK the teachings of being a racist will ever cease to exist...so...that is where I am pessimistic from.

ripp2002 10. January 2009, 06:24

Actually, the closest I would be considered would be a classist not a racist... I dislike lots of races equally... including my own. Trash is trash...

slackwrdave 10. January 2009, 16:48

Hey, good post and comments. Just found them.

I've always been suspicious when I hear things like, "I don't have a racist bone in my body." I feel like such a person has stopped the rigorous and continual self-examination that is needed in life on such an issue.

qlue 10. January 2009, 19:26

The worst is when people say, "I'm not racist, but...". :faint:,

ripp2002 10. January 2009, 20:03

 Like I said, everyone is an "ist" in some way or another... they just do not have the sack or the overies to acknowledge and express it...

angel292005 11. January 2009, 21:02

LC, but are they 'racist' in the way that racist is defined in relation to the post that Aadil has made? Keeping on subject... it appears that Aadil is talking mainly about interracial MARRIAGE and feeling the influence of his family to marry his own race, right?

You are broadening the subject by including ALL areas of racism. SPECIFICALLY how do you feel about interracial marriage?...(the reason I chose to comment on this post, because I am in an interracial marriage)

-Sarah

qlue 12. January 2009, 04:32

To be fair to everyone, I only mentioned one incident. However, being racist is to distinguish between different races. Although many people seem to confuse racism with racial intolerance. A person who is not racist at all, does not even recognise that different races exist, as this is something we're taught as children. One arguement that I have heard against 'inter-racial' marriages is that it's unfair on the children. Personally, I'd say that's a load of BS, but everyone is entitled to thier opinion..

qlue 12. January 2009, 04:40

:left:.

Spaggyj 12. January 2009, 11:07

I'm afraid I must disagree with you there. One should notice different races and learn about different cultures, not ignore them, not actively class everyone as one heritage. Sure, no race is above another, but I, for one, find learning about other people's cultures fascinating. *shrug*

angel292005 12. January 2009, 14:42

Aadil,
I think this discussion could go on and on forever, eh? It is complicated and complex...full of many different views and teachings.

Crap....I have a ton of laundry to do... Can we discuss laundry now?
Can someone do it for me?

ripp2002 13. January 2009, 01:50

I could care less what anyone else does with their marriage. Man to man, woman to woman (I like this one as long as I can watch), white to yellow, those things do not matter. I have numerous friends who are in "mixed marriages" and things along those lines are not important. The morals, beliefs, work ethic, etc... are the only things that matter when people are married and have children because they are passing those down to their children...

qlue 13. January 2009, 04:17

Well, my personal belief is that the easiest way to do laundry is with petrol and a match.:devil:

ripp2002 13. January 2009, 04:55

Cois 13. January 2009, 09:34

In one way or another we all have some prejudice against some other race in one form or another.. Just no getting by it and that's something not many get.
Personally I couldn't care less about race as in my own little world experiences are so that heritage doesn't matter.
I treat people how they treat me and that's it..

decaspecht 21. January 2009, 01:35

Well.. everybody is kind of racism some way. The weed is everywhere.
I'll tell you a situation that my mother had with my grandpa (who is dead) some time ago. Once he was talking to my mother and he had a picture of "Nossa Senhora Aparecida" (a Brazilian saint, who is black), my grandpa had German roots, he showed the picture to my mother and said to her: "This saint does not belong to us". And my mother astonished asked him at the same time: Why? He simply answered: "look at her color".
My mother got really angry and sad and so did I, but we couldn't say anything against him... :frown:

Cois 24. January 2009, 12:18

That's dads for ya..
My uncle's the same way but since I'm not a kid anymore i challenge him on stuff like that easy..
He's complains that the white farmers here are racist but then he slanders the black and indian dudes for some reason Homer: Doh! sometimes i piss him off so much he goes home :D todays generation is more tolerable when it comes to stuff like that but yesteryears peeps are a bit too hardcore..

Quinnuendo 25. January 2009, 12:58

Good post. I know exactly what you mean. Everybody has prejudices. Some of the stereotypes are often true, but that doesn't mean they are facts.

I think one of the best things is trying to be aware of when we jump to conclusions, and try to leave a benefit of a doubt. Or something like that

qlue 25. January 2009, 18:22

My point exactly!

Susthama 16. February 2009, 12:48

hmmm - it just shows how complex these things are - I like to think that on some level we reject things that aren't like us and on another level we accept and respect things that aren't like us.
