I am African

A personal message that I received recently together with my reply.. I'm not sure what this guy was getting at but I hope I managed to answer his question. :left:.

I'm not quite certain what you mean.. I am an african by birth. That is to say, I was born in Africa, as were both my parents. My heritage and genealogy is of mixed european descent. (some of my ancestors were German, some British, some French etc.) my culture is based in South Africa. Although many cultures co-exist side by side here so one cannot say that there is a distinct 'South African' culture. But I definitely do not follow a European culture. :left:. I hope this clears things up for you..

I don't think that cleared it up :left:

Kittylicious 18. February 2009, 06:54

You are so patient, Aadil. I am not even sure I would have answered that PM.

Aadil 18. February 2009, 08:09

I think I should point out that I was not offended in any way. And he didn't mean any disrespect. He was merely curious and I was attempting to answer his question.. Of course, the language barrier does tend to interfere in such instances but that's a normal problem for me. :left:. I have difficulty communicating with the vast majority of my countrymen (and women) due to the poor grammar and vocabulary of most of them. (and I'm talking about those for whom english is there first language!!) :insane:

Cois 18. February 2009, 11:20

Djy vestan my broe! p:

Aadil 18. February 2009, 14:06

So waar Swaer, so waar!

ღೋSarahೋღ 18. February 2009, 14:32

Aadil,
I think it is so sad that people have to explain 'what' they are...Because you are from a predominantly Black nation, those who don't understand are going to wonder about the color of your skin.

Anyway..there are many here in Opera that are from Africa, and none have looked the same YET! I think all the different colors and cultures of Africa as well as America are beautiful.

Just tell them you are a white African. :D People will understand that for sure...I think. :left:

Aadil 18. February 2009, 17:48

I'll try to illustrate what I mean by offering you this example of a government form in South Africa.
(use the back key for your browser to return here)

r♡se 18. February 2009, 19:30

You have to fill out your race on government forms?

ღೋSarahೋღ 18. February 2009, 22:45

The whole 'coloured' thing really is ridiculous.... They take race for 'statistical' purposes! yeah sure! They do the same here, Rose, down to school forms and EVERYTHING! It's out of control.

But the choices, "African" (everyone could be)
"coloured" (everyone could be)

It is laughable.

Aadil 19. February 2009, 05:40

The scary thing is that the government cannot see that they're still doing exactly what the apartheid goverment were doing. Dividing up the nation by race. awww. It has a very bad effect on the citizens of South Africa.

Léazz 19. February 2009, 11:35

Did Asrul reply to you Sir Aadil? Maybe you should tell him 'we are brothers as we are both muslim'

Aadil 19. February 2009, 13:28

We chatted a bit back and forth via PM..

Léazz 19. February 2009, 13:57

Shaunak De 19. February 2009, 18:51

Speaking of South Africa.....

It will host the football WC next year!!!!
I wish I could be there......!

Aadil 19. February 2009, 22:17

You can if you really want to. Anything is possible if you are prepared to make the sacrifice. :D

ღೋSarahೋღ 20. February 2009, 20:55

I've been back to this post so often I am starting to think I am African. Gonna stop the feed now...

Dr. John v. Kampen 9. March 2009, 20:55

A pity you haven't a trickle of Dutch blood....

Aadil 9. March 2009, 21:39

:left:. Not to my knowledge. But, being a South African, I definitely got some Dutch influence!.

Dr. John v. Kampen 9. March 2009, 21:52

Goedso Jochie!

Aadil 9. March 2009, 21:59

Nie so goed met Nederduits nie, maar my Afrikaans is, ten minstens, anvaarbaar. p:

Cois 10. March 2009, 09:09

Leuns!! p::

Dr. John v. Kampen 10. March 2009, 11:43

OK for the intl audience in new Afrikaans then: english...! :D

Aadil 10. March 2009, 13:48

nepmak2000-"that's good, youngster."
qlue-"I'm not so good with Dutch, but my afrikaans is acceptabale."
Cois-"Liar!"

Dr. John v. Kampen 10. March 2009, 14:58

So, dear Aadil and Cois, don't argue, rest in peace, not in pieces! Wat about my Afrikaans, huh? :D :D :D

Aadil 10. March 2009, 20:56

Very good! :D.

Cois 13. March 2009, 16:11

If I say it sucks will I be bitchslapped? p:

Dr. John v. Kampen 13. March 2009, 16:19

Be proud you are an African, I would say! We visisted the Cape and were convinced of its rich culture, but also its difficulties. Although the wine was fairly good!

Cois 19. March 2009, 16:22

I was just joking p: fairly good? All wine is excellent as soon as you're drunk enough  i take it you took the Wine Route?

Dr. John v. Kampen 13. June 2009, 16:17

Stelenbosch is too wellknown to be avoided.

Av1ez 15. June 2009, 19:37

I stumbled on this blog by Accident... But soon i chAnged my mind... It's by luck!  Nice to know U, aadil... Your nAme reAlly suits your "words"...

Aadil 15. June 2009, 19:45

Thanks..
I don't believe in 'accidents' my self. I believe in something that can best be described in english as fate. (aka serendipity).

Dr. John v. Kampen 15. June 2009, 19:46

Or... Luck? :D

Aadil 15. June 2009, 19:58

There is a subtle difference between serendipity and luck. Luck is associated with chance, throwing the dice. Serendipity suggests the existence of a greater plan. I can't make it much clearer than that, but hopefully, that explains it well enough..

Dr. John v. Kampen 16. June 2009, 03:57

You're right. Einstein once must have said: God doesn't play dice...

Av1ez 16. June 2009, 17:16

Alright... Aadil, thx AgAin... U just hAve enriched my vocAbulAry...

AgentCROCODILE 27. June 2009, 03:05

Colors of skin is quite ridiculous. I mean what's next? "Oh there goes a #333333 person" or "Oh there's an RGB(192,192,192) man sitting there"

Aadil 27. June 2009, 08:37

I've never thought of it that way

Dr. John v. Kampen 27. June 2009, 15:14

Too many think #3C3C3C for sure! These are the naggers... And you have a lot of people in the #7F7F7F category looking a bit grey. We can abbreviate and reduce this to saying: he/she is a typical #zero-zero figure = a doom thinker. Some girls are a bit #2F2FEF blue... though.
For those not acquainted with 16-finger counting, you pronounce this as 2-F, 2-F etc.

Imraan 9. July 2009, 09:03

A coloured, being one of mixed race, makes me sure that we're all 'coloureds' Do you know of anybody who isn't mixed to some degree? I think we should identify people regionally than by colour or creed, regardless if the person is a 'black' european or a 'white' african. And whats the idea behind people calling themselves african americans? you're an african or an american. And that people, is my opinion!

Cois 9. July 2009, 11:44

I'm a South African. Punt.

Aadil 9. July 2009, 18:58

I share your views Imraan, although I do recognise the need for referencing ethnicity, for example, when one offer to give a description of a suspect at a crime scene. However, it is illogical to be too pedantic with that since an observer would have a hard time differentiating between a light skinned 'coloured' person, and a darker skinned 'white' person. (as an example only).
Many 'indians' here in South Africa have distinctly european features and pale skin. At a glance, they could easily be mistaken for 'white' or 'coloured'.
But, ultimately, I'm an African. Specifically, I'm a South African. That is also what it says in my ID book..

Cois 9. July 2009, 23:48

I'm not African :left:

Av1ez 10. July 2009, 01:21

Greg Smith 14. August 2009, 19:19

I'm African ... people, in my experience, don't know what Africans are.

It's like saying American !

My friend Fabricio is American (Sao Paulo born - Italian)

Me... I'm African

Aadil 14. August 2009, 21:18

:hat:.

Gyrobo 17. August 2009, 01:57

And Greg's here, too!

You know, before the Opera writing contest, I didn't know a single person from South Africa. Now I can't stop hearing about it!

Is it the nexus of the universe?!
