Opera on Palm OS? No!

, ,

Two weeks ago Opera Software ASA announced that it has signed an agreement with Palm to deliver its Opera 9 Web browser to Palm.

Many users of Palm products know that Palm uses two different operating systems for his products: Palm OS and Windows Mobile for Treo smartphones. Since Opera has released Opera for Windows Mobile long time ago, users started to speculate that the agreement is about long awaited Opera for Palm OS.

The later news – Palm Announces New Linux Based Mobile Platform – convinced me that it won't be Opera for Palm OS, unfortunately. It will be a sort of Opera for Embedded Linux. The new platform and naturally Opera will be available only on new products as it is said also in the Opera announcement: "it has signed an agreement with Palm, Inc., to deliver its Opera 9 Web browser to Palm for use in upcoming products."

"unfortunately. It will be a sort of Opera for Embedded Linux."
what's wrong with this? Why "unfortunately"?

Nothing. It's great to see another application for Linux. But you must notice that there are many, many users of Palm OS devices which want Opera browser on their PDAs. They probably wouldn't be happy that the new Opera product will not be singing on their devices.
