What is Wireless Broadband
Well think of Wireless phone aka Mobile Phones. Mobile Service providers install towers at certain places to provide "coverage" to a particular area. And mobile phones link with those towers to communicate.
Based on the same principle, think of a ADSL Router equipped with Wireless connectivity that can send and receive data signals through such towers. In technical terms, these towers are actually not towers, but small, hi powered equipments (Access Points, AP) that are fitted on tallest buildings in a locality.
These APs will send/receive wireless data signals to a spot Wireless emitter/receiver. In wireless broadband, this is done by a equipment called wireless router at the customer point.
Tikona Wireless Broadband
Tikona works on the same principle. They provide a wireless router which has two wireless modules built into one. One wireless module takes care of communication between the router and Master AP. The other wireless module takes care of home wifi network. Additionally these routers has a RJ45 port to provide a wired-connectivity in the trusted old fashion style.
Tikona uses Ruckus Wireless Router. The model is 2211 Metro Broadband Gateway. This is a typical Wifi router coupled with an additional Wifi module to connect with the master AP. This particular module has a RF cable port to connect external pick-up antenna.
I do not want to get into detailed specs about this router. But let me tell you that this is capable of handling the .G version specs of WiFi standards. You can get
more details here.
Wireless Subscription Plans
As of now, they give out the modem/router under FREE RENTAL mode. May be once they catch enough customer base, they may start charging modem rental. Their plans include Fixed Bill Ceiling as well as Unlimited plans on varying speeds. Comparing with other services, Tikona's plans cost 30 to 40% less.
They do charge a Rs.500 towards installation charges.
When asked for a demo, the service people immediately came to my house and tried to setup the modem. That's when I found that the broadband quality relies upon the signal quality received. My house, though located just 200 meters from the nearest AP, received just about 50% signal strength. (The service people call their technician and they report the signal quality) Once the "handshake" LED starts blinking or glows constantly, then you got the signal.
Installation is pretty straight forward in case of RJ45 connectivity. Just plugin the cable and fire up your browser. Type any URL and it immediately takes you to "http://login.tikona.in". Where in, you will be asked for a Username and Password. Type the username and password and login. Voila! you are ready to go.This username and password will be supplied to you only after the realization of your installation charges and application form completion. This means, you need to wait for one or two days to access your connection. In my case I constantly receive a "AAA" error whenever I tried to login. The service personnel was kind of to give his account to browse temporarily. I've escalated the login issue to customer care and they promised it will resolve in next 24 hours.
As the supplied router works as a home WIFI router too, you can setup a Wireless LAN with support for upto 4 computers. But wifi access requires a Dialer sort of software to ensure security. The dialer is provided by Tikona. You may be required to contact customer support to register the new laptops/desktops to match the MAC address. But this is a only-once process that is required in the beginning.
Conclusion - Installation
Well.. I am neither happy nor disappointed. Just waiting for my login to work. Only then I will be able to assess the quality of the plan and service. Till then, please wait.
