Pupils’ Symphonic Orchestra

of Balys Dvarionas Music School

Pupils’ symphonic orchestra of a ten-grade Balys Dvarionas Music School of Vilnius gathered for its first rehearsal in September of 1999. The idea of L. Užkuraitienė, the Director of the school, to have the pupils’ symphonic orchestra, matured and cherished for a long time, has finally come true.

The orchestra first publicly announced its existence during a joint Christmas concert of pupils and teachers. There, during its first short performance, the orchestra performed B. Marcell’s Concert for Oboe and Orchestra and Barcarolle from J. Offenbach’s opera Hoffman Stories. It goes without saying that orchestra’s presentation could not do without J. Strauss’ Radetzky-Marsch.

In the course of time the orchestra has been expanding and improving. At present, more that 60 children are involved in the orchestra, their age is 10 to 18. The orchestra is led by U. Vaiginis, T.Kuc, V.Pocius, A.Alenskas. Thanks to continuous work, the repertoire of the orchestra has been enriched by Intermezzo from P. Mascagni opera Cavalleria Rusticana and Pas d’Action from P.I. Tchaikovsky’s The Swan Lake (several members of orchestra competed for the right to play the violin and violoncello solo), J. Strauss’ Annen Polka, fragments of L.A.Minkus’ ballet Don Quixote, Triumphal March from G. Verdi’s Aida, in which professional musicians of Lithuanian Opera and Ballet Theatre played the authentic trumpets of Egypt. Concerts of the orchestra can not be conceived without Žvaigždutė by the composer B. Dvarionas, the founder of the school, which has become as if the musical vignette of the orchestra. The repertoire of the orchestra is embellished by C. Saent-Saens’ Carnival of Animals, J. Andreyev’s The Small Concert for the Smallest for piano and orchestra, as well as by the symphonic version of Bohemian Phapsodie of F. Mercury (Queen), etc.

One of the most important dates in the history of the symphonic orchestra of a ten-grade Balys Dvarionas Music School of Vilnius is November 25, 2000, i.e. performance in the Parade of Lithuanian Musicians held in the hall of Lithuanian National Philharmonic. It was a concert-marathon in which all famous musicians and groups of Lithuania performed.

We are happy to mention that during its short existence, the orchestra has already been conducted by such grand maestro of Lithuania as S. Sondeckis and V. Viržonis.

A ten-day creative camp near the Baltic Sea located in the recreation site Pasaka every summer is an inseparable part of the orchestra. There the orchestra members play music, relax, work on a new concert program, and give concerts in the camp and outside it.

Thus, we wait for everyone wishing to co-operate and play music together, as well as for everyone interested in joint musical projects.
