The History of the computer goes back to the 17th century, long before the days of electronics. In 1642 French mathematician Blaise Pascal invented the first mechanical adding machine that could add and subtract numbers, using a series of toothed wheels. Almost 200 years passed before the invention of the computer- a machine that could be programmed to do more than one task. This was the Analytical Engine invented in 1834 by Charles Babbage an English mathematician. Although purely mechanical, Babbage,s machine had all the elements of today.s electronic computers: A way of giving data and instructions to the machine, a processor for calculations and device for printing out answers. Babbage Spent years working on the this design for his computer(above) which consisted of thousands of gearwheels. The machine was so complex that Babbage never saw it built. Wow!
