Why no advanced features in Google Chrome?

, ,

Chrome version 2.0 is closing in fast, yet Google seems to have absolutely no interest in implementing more advanced features into their browser. They are just racing in the "speed" competition.
Where is GMail Notifier like the one in Firefox (with extension)? GMail is their probably the most used service next to their search engine. Bookmarks synchronization? I'm sick of losing bookmakrs because of computer crashes or when something else goes wrong. Bookmarks synchronization backs up all bookmarks dynamically while i use the browser. Not to mention it seamlessly synchronizes them between my PC and netbook. A true must have. Opera Link and Firefox Xmarks rock.
Then there are mouse gestures. Some say they are useless, but when you start using them, you simply forget about "New tab" button or back/forw buttons. There is no need for them. And browsing truly becomes a natural thing of mouse movements instead hunting for buttons.
I also miss right clicking into search boxes in web search tools to add custom search keywords for quick search from URL bar. This is done nicely in Opera and Firefox.
I'm also hoping for some form of Ad Blocking, but since Google is making ravenue from advertisement, i'm not expecting much here. It could be there, just disabled/not used by default like in Opera.

These are also the main reasons why me and many others don't switch to Chrome. It's fast and all but lack of features just makes it look like a much faster version Internet Explorer 4.0. It's just speed without control.
I mean, is it so hard to implement mouse gestures for start? Or custom searches with right clicking?
GMail checking? Other features do require existing infrastructure or major changes, but these don't.
I really hope they'll add these fast so i can switch to Chrome lol

Make your Aspire One faster and very silent!

, , , ...

A1CTL
After searching some more, i found out yet another utility for ACER Aspire One.
And so far it seems to be the most feature rich. Lots of controls, more powerful fan control and there are even quick controls for many other features like quick enabling/disabling for LAN/WIFI/WEBCAM and resolution switching.

In case of MSCOMCTL.OCX errors, make sure you have this installed.
Also extract these two files in the A1CTL folder.

AA1FanControl
I've just found a very nice tool made by Ralf Neumueller called AA1FanControl.
With help of this tool, your ACER Aspire One will run very silent, use less power, fan will last longer and netbook will still be quite cool.
Default settings are designed to kick in the fan at 70°C. Usual temperature for normal non intensive operation is around 50°C. The temperature threshold can be also adjusted by hand.
Also don't forget to donate anything you can to Ralf. He made a very useful tool and any support is welcome to him.

Acer Aspire One Temperature Monitor and Fan control
Few days ago, i've found another program that works similar to AA1FC above, it just looks and works a bit different. The program is made by Lorenzi Davide (Hexagora). Maybe some will like it more than AA1FC.

GMABooster
Second useful tool for ACER Aspire One and even some other netbooks is GMABooster made by Vladimir Plenskiy. This tool gives you ability to overclock Intel GMA950 graphics core found in pretty much all netbooks from default 166MHz to whooping 400MHz. GMABooster enhances 3D experience with a slight (free!) boost. Great for gaming and smooth Aero Glass.
GMABooster is free, but for now, you have to download weekly versions because they expire in 7 days.
I hope that Vladimir will change this to something more friendly. But you can avoid this by donating him some funds and getting unlock key in return, so you can run GMABooster forever without re-downloading it each week.

I hope these two programs will enhance the way how you use your Aspire One netbook

NVIDIA inventing hot water. 5 times in a row!

, , ,

I used to be a great supporter and a happy user of NVIDIA products, owned quite some graphic cards from them but lately, i'm just hating them more and more. First it started with PhysX (you can read about it in my older posts). Now it has escalated to graphic cards themself.
Do you remember GeForce 8000 series? Those were very good card with plenty of power and great image quality (IQ). After that, they've released a refresh, GeForce 9000 series. That's fine, technically speaking. It's a common practice to slightly update existing technology between two major releases.
However NVIDIA didn't stop there. They later released 9800GTX+, which is technically exactly the same thing as 9800GTX (without plus), just made with 55nm manufacture process. Now, NVIDIA again released "new" card named GeForce GTX250. Again, nothing wrong with that, except the fact it's exactly the same as 9800GTX, released 2 series back.

People will think they own the actual latest GPU from NVIDIA, where in fact they're using 3 years old technology under new name.
GeForce 8800GTS = 9800GTX = 9800GTX+ = GTS250 = GTX280M

Usually it's 3 strikes and you're out. NVIDIA seems to insist for much longer...

And no, thats not all. As cherry on top, NVIDIA will be selling the very same 9800GTX cards as GeForce GTX 280M. That's a notebook graphic card (see the "M" behind number). Thats right. A can of whoop ass 9800GTX's all over the place. I think i'll be having nightmares where these 9800GTX cards are chasing me...

Finished? Yeah right. That wouldn't be interesting. NVIDIA is also cutting off hardware support for reviwers and test sites who review these wonderful GTS250 cards as complete rip off.
Yup, if you write bad things about GTS250, NVIDIA will not send you new hardware for testing and reviews. And GTS250 really need some serious bad publicity. It should be selling for 50 bucks, not 130...

And what's happening in the other "red" camp? Nothing this interesting really. AMD will be the first to produce GPU's in 40nm manufacturing process, releasing card refresh with numbers that reflect the range where cards actually belong. And they'll be simply lowering prices for HD4850 and HD4870 graphic cards. Simple and effective. Users know what they're buying. And you're getting new generation technology, not some old crap that has been re-used for 5 times already. I don't care if it's fast enough and if it can compete with similar products from competition. 1 or max. 2 refreshes of same product are ok i guess. But this is just plain wrong and a direct raping of your own customers. Way to go NVIDIA.
I'm just waiting for someone to sue NVIDIA for bad business practices and deceiving of customers.
I guess that shouldn't take long lol...
