Freemake Video Converter with GPU acceleration

, , , , ,

Yesterday i found this cool program to convert all sorts of multimedia files (over 200 of them!) into another format. On the outside it's pretty much like every other program (except it looks really nice and is easy to use). The more important feature in my eyes is hardware acceleration for modern graphic cards. There are 2 options in fact. If you have NVIDIA you'll get CUDA powered converting where with all the other graphic cards you get DXVA 2.0 acceleration. Developers of this program are saying that we can expect performance increase by 50% because of this feature.
It's also featuring other goodies like direct video converting and uploading to services like Youtube.

Bottom line:
- it's free
- it's fast (when using GPU assisted converting)
- it's easy to use and looks good
- supports loads of formats

EDIT:
After some testing, here are some findings which are a bit surprising...

NFS Hot Pursuit 2010 custom Fraps recording (1280x720) to 1280x720 MKV with H.264:
1:36 without DXVA
1:25 with DXVA

Elephants Dream 1920x1080 to 720x576 AVI with XVID:
3:48 without DXVA
3:56 with DXVA

All tested on Core i7 920 @ 3,3GHz, 3x2GB RAM, WD Caviar Black 2TB and Sapphire HD6870 Toxic using catalyst 11.5b

Freemake writes: Hi, thanks for the post about our software. We're writing to clarify that in our program DXVA is turned on only while the encoding of video with H.264 and MPEG2 codecs. Which codecs do your input files have? Could you send them to us for testing (test@freemake.com)? Please contact us anyway

Etienne writes: Hi I get no improvement from version 2.1.5 to the new version 2.2. I transcode DVDs, whose VOB files should contain MPEG streams. Compared to Handbrake, I get a reduction in size. Otherwise MUCH faster than Handbrake X264, which is fantastic.Congratulations.

Etienne writes: Hi Another question, how do I set parameters like decomb and de-letterboxing? Thanks Etienne

Etienne writes: I've found another problem. Transcoding the DVD "Before Sunrise" gives a regular jerk in the transcoded version. Thisis not the case with DVDs such as "Top Hat".
