It sounded as though you preferred avast! over the others you reviewed in your July '08 post about free antivirus software. Do you still prefer avast! over Avira 9?

Well, AVIRA requires few hacks to make it fully operational (for hourly update checks and blocking of annoying popup).
Version 9 is much much better. I'm using it on my netbook and on my sister's laptop. Main system is still running avast!.
And now i'm using avast! along AVIRA just with Network Shield provider.
AntiVir 8 was crippled because there was no spyware detection and that was a huge problem for me. But now i'd say AntiVir and avast! are pretty equal. avast! from the settings and functions side and AntiVir from raw detection strenght.

Does this configuration cause software conflicts?

No. Network Shield is just monitoring URL and DNS connections for known malware distribution links. If one is found, it'll block it (like links that constantly spawn new variants or fake antivirus links).
It also prevents malware like MS Blast and Sasser.
Network Shield doesn't scan any local files on disk, thats why there are no conflicts at all.

I am in the oposite situation than you.
Using Antivir in my computers, and Avast! in family/friends ones.
IHMO, Antivir has a higher detection ratio, plus a slightly more efficient (faster and with less memory usage) than Avast!

But as you said, Antivir requires quite of fine-tunning to have a fully operational product, not to forget that some features are missing in the free version, if we compare them to the free one on Avast.

Best regards.
