Power Defragmenter 3.0 released!
Monday, September 1, 2008 10:39:29 PM
This is my quite well known defragmenter based on Microsoft/Sysinternals Contig core.
They provide the core component, the heart of defragmentation process, i've provided the user interface for it. And so far users just love it. It's not perfect but it's close.
Also a winner of 4 stars at SoftPedia.
Now enough of the bable talk and self compliments hehe

Whats new in version 3.0?
- Simplified Contig download and setup (now almost fully automatic)
- Removed PowerMode(TM) because of compatibility problems with Windows Vista
- Introduced TriplePass(TM) mode replacing obsolete PowerMode(TM)*
- Added ability to defragment removable drives (mostly floppy and USB hard drives**)
- Fixed few glitches
- New Vista style graphics
* TripleMode(TM) runs Contig in 3 passes defragmenting any remaining fragmented files
** don't use on USB flash and SSD drives as they are basically immune to the file fragmentation due to almost non existent access latency. Defragmenting flash devices also decreases their lifetime.

This is a limitation of Contig, not my GUI.
So it will work on starting with Windows NT 4.0 and greater.
For Win9x systems i recommend using Diskeeper 7 Lite.
It used to be the fastest free defragmenter at that time.

However those folders can be easily deleted when Power Defragmenter is not running.

There is one tool named PC Health Optimizer (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pchealthfree.html) but i think it's pretty much the same thing as Windows one just with nice GUI. If it finds errors it runs usual CHKDSK anyway.

Defragmentation is also significantly slowed down when there is not much free space left (especially for huge files). There are also problems with crappy antiviruses that intercept any Defrag action and scan the file that is just being processed.
