STICKY POST

As you might have noticed, I'm not really an active blogger. I hope to make some more use of my blog in the future. If you have something to tell me, you can find me on
OperaNet. Mostly in
#opera (browser related),
#myopera (community related) and
#lounge (general chat). If you don't know how to get there, go to the first url. And *please* read the topic of the channel you go into. There are usually rules in there

address bar, opera, opera:config, search
...
Instead of doing "g testing" some people prefer it without the "g" (or any other search shortcut). Here's how to get that to work:
- Go to opera:config#network
- Disable "Check Local HostName"
- Disable "Enable HostName Expansion"
- Enable "Enable HostName Web Lookup"
- Put the search url (you can find ready to go ones in the search preferences) into "HostName Web Lookup Address"
- Press save under the section and you're done!

upx, opera, speed dial, customizing
...
As some of you may know, there is sometimes information hidden in a compiled application that is not visible at first. Sometimes they are easter eggs, other times they are features that are not enabled yet.
Just because I can I sometimes poke around in the compiled application to see if there is anthing interesting. To get the unpacked dll (yes, the windows version), you need to unpack it with
UPX first.
In the unpacked dll are binary strings that show/do a lot of stuff, but the one I found was until now unknown and does something a lot of people were asking for: it allows a custom number of speed dials. To make use of this hidden feature, just add this to you speeddial.ini file[1]:
[Size]
Rows=4
Columns=5
I think the settings speak for themselves. A small note: while testing really large numbers of speed dials had the nasty habit of eating up all cpu time for quite a while, so be moderate.
Enjoy!
Screenshot of 4x5 speed dials[1] The file is in the directory after "Opera directory" on Help -> About Opera

You're probably here because flash doesn't work in your Opera installation on linux. The short story is this:
Works:
- Opera 9.27 + Flash 9.0.48.0 (with issues, but it works)
- Opera 9.5 build >=1823 + Flash 9.0.124.0
- Opera 9.5 beta 2 + Flash 9.0.124.0
Does NOT work:
- Opera 9.27 + Flash >=9.0.115.0
- Opera 9.5 beta + flash >=9.0.115.0

keyboard, multimedia, weekly, beta
...
In the lastest weekly releases of Opera multimedia keys on your keyboard should work. The downside to that is that Opera probably has shortcuts assigned to those buttons. That means that if you press the next button for example the action assigned to that button (Page down | Forward | Fast forward) is still executed. Altering your keyboard setup so that doesn't happen anymore is pretty simple:
- Go to Tools -> preferences -> advanced -> shortcuts
- Select your current keyboard setup and click duplicate
- Select the new keyboard setup and click rename. Give it a meaningful name so you know what it contains
- Select the new keyboard setup again and click edit
- In the searchfield, enter "RC_" (without the quotes)
- Delete every line containing "platform mac-windows" (if you're on a mac, also delete the lines not containing "windows")
- Click OK
- Select the new keyboard setup and click OK
If it doesn't work and you have a wireless keyboard, reconnect it. That should help.

After years of using Opera and later discovering My Opera I now start a blog too. My life is not really interesting, but at least I've got a place to store my pics :-D
