Remco's piece of the Opera-web

...which still needs a lot of work

More speed dials? There you go!

, , , , ,

As some of you may know, there is sometimes information hidden in a compiled application that is not visible at first. Sometimes they are easter eggs, other times they are features that are not enabled yet.

Just because I can I sometimes poke around in the compiled application to see if there is anthing interesting. To get the unpacked dll (yes, the windows version), you need to unpack it with UPX first.

In the unpacked dll are binary strings that show/do a lot of stuff, but the one I found was until now unknown and does something a lot of people were asking for: it allows a custom number of speed dials. To make use of this hidden feature, just add this to you speeddial.ini file[1]:

[Size]
Rows=4
Columns=5
I think the settings speak for themselves. A small note: while testing really large numbers of speed dials had the nasty habit of eating up all cpu time for quite a while, so be moderate.

Enjoy!

Unfortunately doesn't work in 9.27.

Also section in speeddial.ini have to be the first one in speeddial.ini before all other sections.

But, still -- it's great!

You are a god !!! yes

I have a question :

Why in my screen (laptop 15'') the slots don't cover the entire empty space ? ? ?awww

Here is a screenshot to see what i mean :

[img]http://www.photo2box.com/images/6ntmisqnsf4hrccpoc60.gif

EDIT : I found it ! I use another combination 3x5 and it takes now the 90% of the space.It's has to do with the screen size.

Unfortunately, only the first 9 are synced with Opera Link sad

Also, I hate it that Opera Link website doesn't let you edit the Speed Dial urls.

Rock!! But if only there was a speed-dial CSS :O

CheeseyCheeseyFighter Thursday, June 19, 2008 12:26:08 PM

I already knew it from another source, but is there a way to use the speeddial-numbers larger than 9 in the adressbar?

E.G.: you write 11 into the adressbar and opera opens Speeddial Nr. 11?

clark777 Sunday, June 22, 2008 3:38:14 PM

I'm relatively new to opera so bear with me. I'm intrigued at being able to expand the speeddial page to more than the usual 9. However, I cannot fully understand your instructions. Could you please expand on them for a newbie such as me? To be honest, I need a roadmap. I'd really appreciate it.

To quote myself:

To make use of this hidden feature, just add this to you speeddial.ini file[1]:

[Size]
Rows=4
Columns=5

[1] The file is in the directory after "Opera directory" on Help -> About Opera

If you need more help, the forums are the place to ask.

clark777 Sunday, June 22, 2008 6:02:05 PM

Thanks for the quick response. I just logged in to indicate I found out how to do it. Thanks!

Warning:

If you use Opera Link to synchronize desktop Opera 9.5 and Opera Mini 4+ on your phone, then do not share speeddials. Synchronizing extra speeddials of Opera 9.5 may cut the connection between Opera Mini 4+ and Opera Link server. I have not even reported this "bug" yet, so it may take some time before this is fixed.

Shame though that only the first 9 get synchronised.....

sorinste-ven Wednesday, October 1, 2008 8:22:12 PM

very good, thanks !

Ashrentum Thursday, October 2, 2008 8:51:54 AM

Great trick.

Easier and better in Linux. Just edit the speeddial.init of your personal .opera directory.

It renders better having 3 rows and X columns, depending on your resolution.
