What I liked about the iPod classic

, , ,

With the recent announcements of the latest iPod models this year, the iPod classic may not be the hottest gadget around and people might consider it as nearly obsolete product, but there are still reasons to give the classic some love:

1. Battery life - back when I was using other audio players as my sole music source, I was constantly concerned whether the battery would last with me through the day. The iPod classic, on the other hand, could last nearly a whole week with me on normal use. I could watch Futurama for hours without worrying about battery life, or take it on a two-day outing without plugging it to the charger.

2. Obscenely huge storage - This one's a no-brainer -- everyone loves more storage. And while I don't have a 120GB library of music and videos, the extra storage is makes the iPod classic double as a external drive. No more excuses not to backup files!

3. It's not touchscreen - iPhones and iPod touches may be all the rage these days, but touchscreen devices such as these require you to look at the screen to control the user interface. The old-fashioned click wheel allows me to control the music without taking it out of my pocket.

4. The gigabyte-per-dollar ratio - In terms of capacity, the iPod classic has the best value of all iPods, with more than double the capacity of the iPod touch at about half the price. Granted, flash memory prices are steadily falling and their capacities already catching up with hard drives, but for now hard drives are still the storage king.

5. It's (nearly) perfect - iPod classic marks the end of the first iPod era, which started when the first iPod was introducted back in 2001. Several more versions were introduced throughout the years, adding new features and constantly improving the product, and the iPod classic is the total sum of all those improvements.

6. It never gets old - Why, you ask? Because it's already old! Just kidding. Seriously, while the latest and greatest iPod models are racing to have newest features and gimmicks every year, the iPod classic prefers to stay low-profile and instead improve upon what it already has. Truly a classic.
