Man is forever trying to create a god to suite his own perception of what god is like or what he thinks He should be like. He constantly says things like my god would never do this or that, or my god is a god of love and would never send me or anyone else to hell. The God of the Bible makes them feel uncomfortable and reproves them for there sins and promises to punish those who transgress His commandments or Law. So man sets up an image of silver or gold, or perhaps wood or stone, maybe it is just an image in his mind of what he thinks god should be like or is like and then he calls it a god or god. The scripture puts it this way;
(Psa 115:4) Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.
(Psa 115:5) They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not:
(Psa 115:6) They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not:
(Psa 115:7) They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.
(Psa 115:8) They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them.
(Gal 4:8) Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.
1Co 10:20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hinder the truth in unrighteousness;
Rom 1:19 because that which is known of God is manifest in them; for God manifested it unto them.
Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse:
Rom 1:21 because that, knowing God, they glorified him not as God, neither gave thanks; but became vain in their reasonings, and their senseless heart was darkened.
Rom 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Rom 1:23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things.
So the first commandment is not saying that there are other gods, but that we should not create idols and worship them. There is only one God and He has created all things, He gives us our life and every good thing. He alone should be worshipped. Worshipping anything else is Idolatry and breaking God's Law which is punishable by death
