Fatimah az-Zahra

Name:Fatimah.
Title: az- Zahra'.
Agnomen: Ummu 'l-A'immah.
Father's name: Muhammad ibn `Abdillah.
Mother's name: khadijah bint khuwaylid.
Birth: Born in Mecca of Friday, 20th jumada ` th-thaaniyah in the fifth year after the declaration of the prophet - hood (615 AD).
Death: Died at the age of 18 in Medina on 14th Jumada ' l-ula 11 AH ( 632 AD); buried in the graveyard called Jannatul-Baqi in Medina.
HADRAT FATIMAH, was the only daughter of the Holy Prophet and Hadrat khadijah. the circumstances of her birth are described by Hadrat khadijah as follows: At the time of the birth of Hadrat Fatimah, I sent for my neighboring qurayshite women to assist me. They flatly refused, saying that I had betrayed them by supporting Muhammad. I was perturbed for a while, when , to my great surprise, I sighted four strange tall women with halos around them , approaching me. Finding me dismayed, one of them addressed me thus, " O Khadijah! I am Sarah, the mother of Ishaq, and the other three are, Mary the mother of Christ, Asiyah the daughter of Muzahim, and Umm kulthum, the sister of Moses. We have all been commanded by God to put our nursing knowledge at your disposal." saying this, all of them sat around me and rendered the services of midwifery till my daughter Fatimah was born. The motherly blessings and affection received by Hadrat Fatimah were only for five years, after which Hadrat Khadijah left for her heavenly home . Hereafter the Holy Prophet brought her up.

Marriage:
When Fatimah come of age, there come forward a number of aspirants to ask for her hand in marriage. The Holy prophet was awaiting the Divine order in this respect, till Imam ` Ali approached him and asked for her hand in marriage. The Holy Prophet come to Hadrat Fatimah and asked, " My daughter ! Do you consent to be wedded to ` Ali, as I am so commanded by Allah ? " Hadrat Fatimah thereupon bowed her head in modesty. Umm Salamah narrates: " The face of Fatimah bloomed with joy and her silence was so suggestive and conspicuous that the Holy Prophet stood up reciting ` Allahu Akbar' ( Allah is most great ) .
Fatimah's silence is her acceptance." On Friday, l st. dhi'l - hijjah 2 A H , the marriage ceremony took place. All the Muhajirun ( Emigrants) and Ansar ( Helpers) of Medina assembled in the mosque while Imam ` Ali was seated before the Holy Prophet with all the ceremonious modesty of a bridegroom. they Holy Prophet first recited an eloquent sermon and them announced: I have been commanded by Allah to get Fatimah wedded to ` Ali, and so I do hereby solemnize the matrimony between ` Ali and Fatimah on a dower of four hundred mithqal of silver. Then he asked Imam ` Ali, " Do you consent to it, O `Ali ? " Yes, I do , O Holy Prophet of Allah! " replied Imam ` Ali. Then the Holy Prophet raised his hands to pray thus O my god ! bless both of them , sanctify their progeny and grant them the keys of The beneficence, Thy treasures of wisdom and Thy genius; and let them be a source of blessing and peace to my ummah. Her children; Imam Hasan, Imam husayn, zaynab and um kultun, are well - known for their piety , goodness and generosity. Their strength of character and action changed the course of history and fortified Islam which otherwise would have been lost to mankind.

Her Ethical Attributes
Hardrat Fatimah inherited the genius and wisdom, the determination and will - power, the piety and sanctity, the generosity and benevolence, the devotion and worship of Allah, the self - sacrifice and hospitality, the forbearance and patience, and the knowledge and nobility of disposition of her illustrious father , both in words and deeds. " I often witnessed my mother, "says Imam Husayn, " absorbed in preayer from dusk to down. "Her generosity and compassion for the poor was such that no destitute or beggar ever returned from her door unattended.

The Property of Fadak
The Holy Prophet during his lifetime gave Hadrat Fatimah a gift of very extensive from land , known as Fadak , which was documented in her name as her absolute property. The death of the Holy Prophet affected her very much and she was very sad and grief - stricken and wept her heart out crying all the time . she was confronted, after the demise of her father, with the deprivement of the rightful claim of leadership of her husband Imam ` Ali , and the usurpation of her inheritance, the Fadak. Throughout her life, she never spoke to those who had oppressed her and deprived her of her rightful claims. She requested that her oppressors should be kept away even from attending her funeral. Her ill - wishers even resorted to physical violence. Once the door of her house was pushed on her , and the child she was carrying was hurt and the baby - boy was still born. Her house was set on fire. Having been molested and strichen with grief, which crossed all limits of forbearance and endurance , she expressed her sorrows in and elegy composed by herself to mourn her father the Holy Prophet. A couplet of the elegy, with particular reference to her woeful plight, she expressed thus: O my father ! after your death I was subjected to such tortures and tyranny that if they had been inflicted on the `Day' , it would have turned into ` Night'.

Death
Hadrat Fatimah did not survive more than seventy-five day after the demise of her father. she breathed her last on the 14th jumada'l - ula 11 AH. Before her demise she bequeathed the following as her will to Imam 'Ali: 1. O ` Ali, you will personally perform my funeral rites. 2. Those who have displeased my should not be allowed to attend my funeral. 3 .My corpse should be carried to the graveyard at right. Thus Imam ` compliance with her will , performed all the funeral rites and accompanied exclusively by her relatives and sons carried her at night to Jannatu l-Baqi, where she was laid to rest and her wishes fulfilled.
The Holy Prophet said:
"whoever injures (bodily or sentimentally ) Fatimah, injures me ; and whoever injures me injures Allah; and whoever injures Allah practices unbelief. O Fatimah ! If your wrath is incurred, it incurs the wrath of Allah; and if you are happy, it makes Allah happy too."

Fatimah, the only daughter of the Holy prophet of Islam, was born I Mecca on 20 Th. Jumada ' th - thaniyah 18 BH. The good and noble lady Khadijah and the apostle of Allah bestowed all their natural love, care and devotion on their lovable and only child Fatimah, who in her turn was extremely fond of her parents. The princess of the House of the Prophet, was very intelligent, accomplished and cheerful. Her sermons, poems and sayings serve, as an index to her strength of character and nobility of mind. Her virtues gained her the title " Our Lady of light. she was tall, slender and endowed with great beauty, which caused her to be called " az - Zahra' " ( the Lady of Light). she was called az - Zahra' because her light used to shine among those in Heaven. After arriving in Medina, she was married to ` Ali , in the first year hijrah, and she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Her children, Hasan, Husayn, Zaynab and umm kul-thum. are well - known for their piety , goodness and generosity Their strength of chracter and actions changed the course of history. The Holy Prophet said, " Fatimah is a peace of my heart". He would go out to receive his doughtier whenever she come from her husband's house.
Every morning on his way to the Mosque, he would pass by Fatimah's house and say: " as-salamu ` alaykum ya ahlul-Bayti`n-nubuwwah wa ma` dani ` r - risala " ( peace be on you O the Household of prophet hood and the source of Messengership) Fatimah is famous and acknowledged as the " sayyidatu 'n-nisa'i ' l-alamin " ( Leader of all the women of the world for all times ) because the Prophethood of Muhammad would not have been everlasting without her. The Prophet is the perfect example for men, but could not be so for women. For all the verses revealed in the Holy Qur'an for women, Fatimah is the perfect model, who translated every year into action. In her lifetime, she was a complete woman, being Daughter, wife and Mother at the some time.
Muhammad during his lifetime, gave Fatimah a gift of very extensive farm lands, famous as Fadak, which were documented in her name, as her absolute personal property. An heiress to the remainder of her mother`s wealth, a princess who was the only daughter of the holy prophet who was also a ruler, a lady whose husband was the conqueror of Arab tribes and second only to her father in and position, Fatimah could have led a luxurious life. But in spite of her wealth and possessions, she worked, dressed, ate and lived very simply . she was very generous; and none who come to her door, when away empty handed. Many times she gave away her all and herself went without food. As a daughter, she loved her parents so much , that she won their love and regard to such and extent that the Holy prophet used to rise, whenever she come near him As a wife, she was very devoted.
She never asked ` Ali for anything in her whole life. As a mother , she cared for and brought up wonderful children; they have lift their marks on the face of the world , which time will not be able to eraze. The death of the Apostle, affected her very much and she was very sad and grief- striken and wept her heart out crying all the time. unfortunately, after the death of the prophet, the government confiscated her famous land of Fadak and gave it to the state. Fatimah was pushed behind her him door ( when they attacked the house of ` Ali and took him to force him accept the caliphate of Abu Baker), so that the child , she was carrying was hurt and the baby boy Muhsin was still born.
Her house was set on fire by the Government. The tragedy of her father's death and the unkindness of her fathers`s followers, were too much for the good , gently and sensitive lady and she breathed her last on 14 Th. Jumada ` l - ula 11 AH, exactly seventy - five days after the death of her father, the Holy prophet of Islam. Fatimah died in the prime of her life at the age of eighteen, and was buried in jannatu 'l-Baqi ` Medina.

Within these gillyflowers, at the foot of yonder lofty oak,
On the stream's awareness, on the plant's law

I am a Muslim
The rose is my Qebleh
The spring my prayer-carpet
The light, my prayer stone
The field my prostrate place
I take ablution with the heartbeat of windows
Moon flows into my prayer, gently it flows
The rock is visible from behind my prayer
All particles of my prayer are illuminated
I pray when the wind calls for prayer
From the cypress tree’s minaret
I practice my ritual when weeds say God is Greater
When wave raises

My Ka’ba is beside the brook
My Ka’ba is beneath the acacia
My Ka’ba is lid the breeze, blowing from garden to garden from one town to another town

My Black Stone is light of the garden

I’m a native of Kashan
I’m a painter
Now and then I build a cage by paint, sell it to you to refresh your heart
With the song of anemone which is imprisoned in it

My father died before twice migrating swallows
Before twice snows,
Before twice sleeping under the moonlight
The sky was blue when my father died

When my father died, the constables were all poets

I asked him, “How much is the price of one once of contentment?”

My father used to paint
He used to make tars, played the Tar too
He was a calligrapher

Our garden stood on the shadowy side of wisdom
Our garden was the interweaving point of feeling and plants
Our garden was the point where looks Cage and Mirror met
Our garden was perhaps an arc of the green circle of happiness
On that day I was munching the unripe fruit of God in my sleep
I would drink water unphilosophically
I picked up mulberries unscientifically
As soon as the pomegranate cracked hands turned to jets of desire
As soon as the lark sung, the chest burnt from delight
now and then loneliness rubbed its face against the windowpane
desire would come and put its arms around the sense’s neck

Life then was a line of light and doll
An armful of liberty
Life then was a pond of music

Gradually the baby tiptoed away in the alleys of dragonflies
I packed my things and went to a town of light thoughts
My heart with the alienation of dragonflies

I went as to the party thrown by the world
I went to the field of sorrow
To the garden of mysticism
I went to the illuminated veranda of knowledge
I mounted the stairs of religion
To the end of the doubt’s alley,
To the cool air of independence
To the wet night of kindness
I went to visit somebody at the other side of love
I went and went up to the woman
To the lamp of pleasure
To the silence of desire
To the loud voice of loneliness

I saw many things on earth
I saw a child who sniffed the moon
I saw a gateless cage in which light was fluttering a flight of stairs that love was mounted to the roof of heaven
I saw a woman pounding light in a mortar
At noon there was bread, vegetables, distance of gillyflower in their tables, and a hot bowl of kindness

I saw a beggar who hardly begged for the song of the swallow
And a garbage man who was praying by the skin of a melon

I saw lambs that were eating balloons
I saw an ass that understood the alfalfa
In the pasturage of advice I saw a well-fed cow

I saw a poet addressing the lily as “your highness”

I saw a book whose words were all made of crystal a paper made of spring
A museum far from the grass
A mosque far distant from water
I saw the bed of a disappointed theologian, a picture full of questions

I saw a mule loaded with compositions
A camel loaded with an empty basket of advice and proverbs
I saw a scholar loaded with “tanana-ha-yahu”

I saw a train transporting light
I saw a train transporting jurisprudence and how heavy it moved?
A train was transporting policies (and how empty it was?)
I saw a train transporting the seeds of water lily and the song of canary
And an airplane whose windowpane at that elevated height
Displayed dust
The hoopoe’s crest
Spots on the butterfly’s wing
A frog’s reflection in the pond
And the passage of a fly in the alley of solitude
I saw the bright desire of a sparrow when she was descending to the ground from the plane tree
And the maturity of sun
And the beautiful copulation of the doll and down

I saw a flight of stairs leading to the hotbed of lust
To the cellar of alcohol
To the law of rose’s decay
To the understanding of the arithmetic of life
To the rooftops of revelation
To the platform of illumination

Down below
My mother was washing the cups in the memory of river

The town was visible
The geometric growth of cement, iron, stone
Rooftops of hundreds buses void of pigeons
A florist putting his flowers on sale
A poet tying a swing between two lilac trees
A boy throwing stones at the school wall
A kid spitting on an apricot on his father’s faded prayer carpet
A goat drinking from the Caspian on a map

A clothes-line was visible, an impatient bracelet

A cartwheel that pined for the horse to stop
The horse pining for the cartman to sleep
The cartman pining for death

Love was visible, wave were visible,
Snow was visible, friendship too
The word was visible
Water was visible and the reflection of objects in the water
The cool shade of cells in the heat of blood
The wet side of life
East of human inherent sorrow
The season of idling in the alley of woman
Scent of solitude in the alley of seasons

A fan was visible in the summer’s hand

The seed’s journey to flowering
The ivy’s journey from house to house
The moon’s journey into the pond
The eruption of the flower of regret from earth
The downpour of young vine from the wall
The rain of dewdrops over the sleep’s bridge
The leap of joy from the swamp of death
The passage of accident from behind word

The battle of a hole with the pleasing light
The battle of a stair against the long leg of sun
The battle of solitude with a song
The beautiful battle of pears against an empty basket
The bloody battle of pomegranate against the jaws
The battle of Nazi’s against the sensitive plant
The battle of a parrot against eloquence
The battle of a forehead against the coldness of prayer-stone

The attack of mosque tiles prostrations
The attack of wind to the ascension of soap bubbles
The attack of army of butterflies with the pest control program
The attack of dragon flies to the row of pipe installers
The attack of reed pens on lead letters
The attack of work ton the poet’s jaw

The conquest of century by a poem
The conquest of a garden by a starling
The conquest of an alley by an exchange of salutations
The conquest of a town by three or four wooden horse riders
The conquest of New Near by two dolls and a ball

A ratchet murdered on the mattress in the afternoon
A story murdered on the mouth of the alley of sleep
A sorrow murdered by the command of song
A moonshine murdered by the command of neon light
An oak murdered by the government
A melancholy poet murdered by the snowdrop (gole yakh)

The entire face of earth was visible
Order walked in the Greek Alley
The bat hooting in the hanging garden
The wind was blowing a sheaf of history’s straws on Kheibar Pass towards east
A boat carrying flowers on the calm Lake Negueen
An eternal lamp was burning at the mouth of each street in Banares

I saw people
I saw towns
I saw fields and alleys
I saw water, I saw earth
I saw light and darkness
And plants in the light and plants in the darkness
Animals in light, animals in the darkness
And man in the light and man in the darkness

I’m a native of Kashan but
My hometown is not Kashan
My hometown has been lost
Overcome with fever and with impatience
I have built another house on the other side of house

In this house I feel closer to the moist obscurity of grass
I can hear the garden breathing
And the sound of darkness when dropping from a leaf
And the sound of a light coughing from behind a tree
I can hear the sniffing of water at through the crack of each rock
I can hear swallows dripping down from the spring’s ceiling
And the clear sound of opening and closing windows of solitude
And the pure sound of love vaguely casting off its skin
And the condensation of longing to fly in the wing
And the cracking of the soul’s resistance
I can hear the sound of footsteps of longing
And the sound of footsteps of blood’s law in the vein
The pulse of dawn in the pigeon’s well
The heartbeat of Thursday evening
The flow of clove pink in thought
The pure neigh of truth from distance
I can hear the blowing of the female
And the sound of the shoe of faith in the alley of longing
And the sound of rainfall on the eyelid of the love’s body
Over the sad music of puberty
Over the song of pomegranate groves
And the sound of shattering of glass in the evening the tearing of the paper beauty
And filling and refilling of cup of nostalgia from the wind

I am close to the beginning of earth
I pick up the pulse of flowers
I am familiar with the wet fate of water and the green habit of the tree

My soul flows towards the new direction of objects my soul is young
My soul sometimes coughs from joy
My soul is idle
It counts raindrops, the holes in bricks,
My soul is sometimes true as a rock on the road

I haven’t seen two poplars to be enemies
I haven’t seen a willow selling its shade to the ground
The elm tree freely bestows its branch to the crow wherever there is a leaf my passion blossoms a poppy bush has bathed me in the flow of existence

I know the weight of the dawn like the wing of an insect
I listen to the music of growth like a flowerpot like a basketful of fruit I have high fever to ripen
I stand on the border of languor in the tavern
Like a building at the edge of the sea I am anxious about the long eternal waves

Sun as much as you want, union as much as you wish, multiplication as much as you want

I am content with an apple
And with smelling of chamomile plant
I am content with a mirror, a pure relationship
I won’t laugh if the balloon bursts
I won’t laugh if a philosophy halves the moon
I know the flapping found of quail’s wings
The color of bustard’s belly, footprints of mountain goat
I well know where rhubarbs grow
When starlings comes, when partridges sing,
When falcons die
I know well the meaning of moon in a sleeping desert
Death in the stalks of desire
And raspberries of pleasure in the mouth of copulation

Life is a pleasant custom
Life wears wings as wide as death
It leaps to the dimensions of love
Life is nothing that might from my mind and your mind in the tip of habit’s shelf
Life is the attraction of a hand that reaps
Life is the first black fig in the acrid mouth of summer
Life is the dimension of a tree in the eyes of an insect
Life is the experience of bat in the darkness
Life is a strange sense experienced by a migrating bird
Life is the whistling of a train ringing in the sleep of a bridge
Life is like looking at a garden through the closed window of an airplane
The news of a rocket flying to the space
Touching the solitude of moon
The thought of smelling the flower in other planets

Life is washing a plate

Life is finding a penny in the street gutter
Life is the square of the mirror
Life is the flower multiplied to eternity
Life is the earth multiplied in our heartbeats
Life is a simple and monotonous geometry of breaths

Where I am, let it be so
The sky is mine
The window, thought, air, love, earth is mine
What signifies?
If mushrooms of nostalgia
Sometimes grow?

I don’t know
Why some say that the horse is a noble animal, the pigeon is beautiful
And why no vulture dwells in any person’s cage
I wonder why the clover is interior to alfalfa
One must wash eyes, look differently to things words must be washed
The word must be wind itself, the word must be the rain itself

One must shut umbrellas
One must walk in the rain
One must carry the thought, the recollection in the rain
One must go walk in the rain with all the townsfolk
One must see friends in the rain
One must search love in the rain
One must sleep with a woman in the rain
One must play in the rain
One must write, talk and plant lotus flowers in the rain
Life is repeated wetting
Life is swimming in the pond of present

Let’s undress
The brook is a step away

Let’s taste light
Let’s weigh the night of a village, and the dream of a gazelle
Let’s feel the warmth of the stork’s nest
Let’s not step on the law of meadow
Let’s open the knot of taste in the vineyard
And open our mouths when the moon emerges
Let’s not say that moon is a bad thing
Let’s not say that the glowworm is ignorant of the garden’s insight

And bring a basket
Take all this red, all this green

Let’s eat bread and cheese in mornings
And plant a sapling at every pitch of a sentence
And pour the seed of silence between two syllables
Let’s not read a book in which the wind doesn’t blow
And a book in which the skin of dew is not wet
And a book in which cells are dimensionless
Let’s not wish the mosquito to fly from the fingertip of nature
Let’s not wish the leopard to exit from the gate of creation
We should understand that life would miss something if now worm existed
And the law of the tree would be damaged of no caterpillars existed
And our hands would seek after something if death didn’t exist
Let’s understand that the living logic of flight would change if there was no light
Let’s understand that there was a vacuum in the thought of seas when no corals were born

And let’s not ask where are we
Let’s smell the fresh petunias in the hospital

Let’s not ask where is the jet of fortune
Let’s not ask why the heart of truth is blue
Let’s not ask what breeze, what nights enjoyed our forefathers enjoyed
Behind us no living space exists
Behind us sings no bird
Behind us now wind blows
Behind us the green window of poplar is shut
Behind us dust has settled over every whirligig
Behind us lies the fatigue of history
Behind us the memory of wave pours cold shells of silence

Let’s walk to the beach
Let’s cast the net in the water
And catch freshness from water

Let’s pick up a pebble from the ground
Feel the weight of existence

Let’s not abuse moonshine if we suffer from fever
(Occasionally I have observed the moon descending during fever
And reaching the hand of the roof of heaven
I have noticed the goldfinch singing better
Sometimes the wound beneath my foot
Has taught the ups and downs of earth
Sometimes in my sickbed the dimension of the rose has multiplied
And the diameter of orange has increased, the radius of lantern too)
And let’s not fear death
(Death is not the end of pigeon
Death is not the cricket’s inversion
Death flows in the mind of acacia
Death dwells in the pleasant climate of mind
Death speak of morning within the nature of village night
Death comes into the mouth with the bunch of grapes
Death sings in red larynx of throat
Death is responsible for the beauty of butterfly’s wing
Death sometimes picks up basis
Death sometimes empties vodka
Death sometimes sit in the shade, watching us and we all know
The lungs of pleasures is full of oxygen of death)

Let’s not shut the door to living speech of destiny which we hear from behind the hedges of sound

Let’s remove the curtains
Let’s allow our feeling to drink fresh air
Let’s allow puberty to dwell under any bush it wishes
Let’s allow instinct to play
Let’s allow all it to take off its shoes and leap over the flowers following seasons
Let’s allow solitude to sing a song
To write something
To go to the street

Let’s be plain
Let’s be plain whether in front of the teller’s window or under a tree

It is not our business to fathom the mystery of rose
Perhaps our business is to float within the magic of the rose
Camp behind wisdom
Wash our hands in the ecstasy of a leaf and waling to the table
And be born again when the sun rises in the mornings
Let’s allow our excitement to fly
Let’s pour water upon the perception of space, color, sound and the window of flowers
Let’s set heaven between two syllables of existence
Let’s is fill and empty our lungs with eternity
Let’s lift down the burden of knowledge from the shoulders of the swallow
Let’s take back our name from the cloud
From the plane tree, mosquito, summer
Let’s mount to the height of kindness of the wet feet of rain
Let’s open the door open the door to mankind, light, plants and inspects

Khaneh Tekani - Spring Cleaning

Noruz (new year, or more literally "new day") is the most important celebration for Iranians. Perhaps the first step in preparing for Noruz or Now-Ruz, the Persian New Year, is Khaneh Tekani, the annual house cleaning or the spring-cleaning. In ancient times, Iranians believed that spirits of their deceased families and friends would come to visit their descendants and their homes. For this occasion, the hosts clean their homes. The word Khaneh or the slang Khooneh means house or home. The word Tekani means shaking. So the Iranians are literally shaking the house to clean it - much like you shake a rug to clean it. During the Khaneh Tekani, every room in the house is thoroughly cleaned. Iranian families gather to wash the rugs, carpets, and curtains. They polish silverware, pots and pans, and renew old items in the house. In addition, for Norooz, every member of the family renews their look by purchasing Norooz clothes to be worn on the day of Norooz. Families fill their homes with the sweet fragrance of flowers such as hyacinth and narcissus. The burning of wild rue, which is called esfand, is practiced to keep evil spirits away and provide a nice aroma in the house.


Chahar Shanbeh Suri - red wednesday Bonfire Festival

On the eve of the Wednesday before Norooz, the Iranians celebrate Chahar Shanbeh Suri. This is commonly known as the Wednesday Feast or the Festival of the last Wednesday as it is always celebrated on the eve of the last Wednesday of the year. The word Chahar Shanbeh means Wednesday and Suri is red.

The festivities start in the early evening. Children and fun seeking adults, wrap themselves in white sheets or costumes reenacting visits by the departed spirits. They run through the streets banging on pots and pans with spoons. This is called Gashog-Zani or spoon banging and ushers out the last unlucky Wednesday of the year. They also go to their neighbors, knock on doors and ask for treats, a tradition very similar to Halloween. The main event of Chahar-Shanbeh Suri is the setting of seven little fires consisting of dried bushes and shrubs, which are placed on the ground. Adults and children alike gather to jump over the flames to sing, and celebrate the renewal of life. While jumping the flames, the person chants “Sorkhi-e to az man. Zardi-e man az to.” The literal translation is, “Your fiery red color is mine and my sickly yellow paleness is yours.” Loosely translated, this means you want the fire to take your paleness, sickness and problems and in turn give you redness, warmth and energy. There is no religious significance attached to Chahar Shanbeh Suri and it serves as a cultural festival for all Iranian Jews, Moslems, Armenians, Turks and Zoroastrians alike.


Iranians believe that wishes will come true on this night. Wishes are made and in order to make them come true, it is customary to prepare Noodles & Bean soup called Ash-e Chahar Shanbeh Suri and share with the poor. Friends and strangers alike are also served with nuts and dried fruits, the Ajil-e Chahar Shanbeh Suri. The Ajil has a mixture of seven dried nuts and fruits, pistachios, roasted chic peas, almond, hazelnuts, figs, apricots, and raisins.

To make wishes come true, people who have made wishes will stand at the corner of an intersection, or hide behind walls to listen to conversation of those passing by. If the conversations overheard are positive then the wish will come true. This tradition is called Fal Gush meaning 'listening for one's fortune'. Finally the Chahar Shanbeh Suri evening ends with fire works and family gatherings for a festive meal.


This ancient festival has been celebrated for thousands of years ever since the birth of the Zoroastrian religion in Persia. Persians celebrated the last 10 days of the year in the annual feast of souls, Hamaspathmaedaya, Farvardigan or popularly Forodigan). They believed Foruhars, the guardian angels for humans and the spirits of deceased would come back for a visit. These spirits were entertained as honored guests, and were given a ritual farewell at the dawn of the New Year. The bon fires also served as a welcome to these guests. Small clay figurines in shape of humans and animals symbolizing all departed relatives and animals were also placed on the rooftops. Flames were burnt all night to ensure the returning spirits were protected from the forces of Ahriman. This was called Suri festival. There were gatherings in joyful assemblies, with prayers, feasts and communal consumption of ritually blessed food. Rich and poor met together and the occasion was a time of general goodwill when quarrels were resolved and friendships renewed.

On the Thursday after Chahar Shanbeh Suri, Shab-e Jome is celebrated which is a traditional big feast of polo and chicken. Follow ling this ritual assures one that there will be a similar dinner at least once a week during the coming year.


Norooz History - New Years Roots

The word Norooz meaning New Day, is the most anticipated and favorite celebration for Iranians. It occurs exactly on the Spring Equinox. This occasion has been renowned in one form or another by all the major cultures of ancient Mesopotamia. Sumerians, 3000 BC, Babylonians, the ancient kingdom of Elam in Southern Persia and Akaddians in the second millennium BC, all celebrated this festival. What we celebrate today as Norooz (Also spelled Now Ruz, Norooz or Norouz) has been around for at least 3000 years and is deeply rooted in the rituals and traditions of the Zoroastrians of the Sassanian period.

The concepts of Hell, Heaven, Resurrection, the coming of the Messiah, individual and last judgment are the foundation for the Zoroastrian belief system and still exist in Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions. In their ancient text, ‘Bundahishn’ foundation of creation, it is said that The Lord of Wisdom (Ahura Mazda) residing in the eternal light was not God. He created all that was good and became God. The Hostile Spirit, Angra Mainyu (Ahriman), residing in the eternal darkness created all that was evil and became the Hostile Spirit. Everything that produced life, protected and enriched it was regarded as good. This included all forces of nature beneficial to humans. Earth, waters, sky, animals, plants, justice, honesty, peace, health, beauty, joy and happiness were regarded as belonging to the good forces. All that threatened life and created disorder belonged to the hostile spirits.

The next creation was the material world, created at seven different stages. The first creation was the sky, and the second was the first ocean. Earth, a big flat dish sitting on the ocean, was the third. The next three creations were the first plant, the first animal a bull and the first human Gayo-maretan (Kiomarth, both male and female). The seventh creation was fire together with the sun.

To protect his creations the Lord of Wisdom created six holy immortals known as ‘Amesha Spenta’. The first three were male deities. Khashtra (Sharivar), the protector of sky; Asha-Vahishta (Ordibehesht) and Vahu Manah (Bahman) protected fire and animals. The other three were female deities: Haurvatat (Khordad) to protect water, Spenta Armaiti (Esfand) protector of mother earth and Ameratat (Amoordad) for plant life. Ahura Mazda became the protector of humans and the holy fire. The six immortals are the names of six of the months in the current Iranian calendar. To begin the cycle life, the plant produced seeds; the bull produced all animals and from the human came the first male and female. The rest of the humanity was created from their union. This was called the first No Ruz, meaning new day and the beginning of the cycle of life. It starts at the beginning of spring and the seven creations are remembered and embraced through the Iranian New Year spread called Sofreh Haft Sin. Norooz is celebrated for 13 days after the mark of spring equinox.


Sal Tahvil - New Year's Times

The Sal Tahvil or the Sa'at-e Tahvil is New Year's Eve, which is the official time for the Spring Equinox. Every year the equinox occurs at a different point in time, so the date, although accurately measured (to the date and time) is different each year, but close to March 20th.

Sa'at- tahvil is an important moment, as it is a time for forgiving each other, putting away petty differences and looking forward to building more constructive relationships. The countdown is often followed carefully on the radio or television, as the family gathers around the haft sin, in their new clothes, carefully watching the egg or preparing to take a picture of the Sal Tahvil. Legend says that there is a bullfish in the ocean of time carrying the world on one of its horns. When the Sal-e Tahvil arrives, the bullfish tosses the world over to the other horn, resulting in a tremor that will dislodge the egg and send it rolling to the side of the mirror.

As the countdown ushers in the new year, everyone rejoices, kiss each other, exchanging Norooz greetings such as “Eid-i shoma mobarak!”or “Sal-e No Mobarak!” which means Happy New Year. Gifts, usually money called Eidi, placed inside the Koran are exchanged, given by older members to the younger members of the family. Members of the family then celebrate by singing, eating, drinking and taking pictures.

It is also believed that the next visitor to the home will set the tone for luck in the new year, so generally the family will send out the youngest or most innocent member of the family to go outside with some sweets and knock on the door, come in and pretend to be a visitor. After the family has celebrated, the next 13 days are spent visiting the families.

Families gather to take pictures and share sweets and celebrate.





Haji Firuz & Amoo Norooz- The Persian Troubadour & Santa Claus


The old Haji, named Firuz or Firooz, is the troubadour who ushers in the new year with his song, dance and merriment. Haji Firooz symbolizes the rebirth of the Sumerian god of sacrifice, Domuzi, who was killed at the end of each year and reborn at the beginning of the New Year. Wearing an elaborate red costume which is a cross between a court jester, santa claus and perhaps a venician at carnival, the herald uses his tambourine and enlists a few fellow comedians to make the world laugh. Traditionally, Haji Firooz wears black make up and this is thought to have come from ancient times when the entertainment was provided by black slaves who, with their rather 'strange accents' for the Persians brought laughter to the people. Today’s modern Haji Firooz sings and dances through the streets with tambourines and trumpets spreading joy for Norooz. He often appears at gatherings and entertains by singing, dancing, telling stories and also a few good jokes. Children and adults all love Haji Firooz who, if you are lucky, will tell a few good tales like that of Amoo Norooz (Amoo Norouz) and other old Persian tales. Amoo Norooz, a distant relative of Haji Firooz is responsible for giving gifts to the children much like Santa Claus. He makes their wishes come true and ensures that they are happy and healthy for many years to come.




Sofreh Preparation - Growing Sabzeh & Egg painting

You can start growing your sabzeh which is the first S on the sofreh and consists of green sprouts, about 2 or 3 weeks before Norooz. This also depends on how tall you want your Sabzeh. You will need whole lentils (adas) or whole-wheat seeds sold at Iranian stores. We recommend you use these as grocery store seeds do not always yield the best results.

Place a good amount of seed on a nice plate or dish, about 1 cm thick, Soak the seeds in water for two days and then put them on a shallow plate and cover it with a cotton cloth or thin towel. With the cloth over the seeds, place plate in a sunny location or under a light if you do not have access to the sun. Squirt water over the shoots several times a day, and keep them covered with the cloth. Ensure that the seeds do not get too dry or over-soaked. In about 2 or 3 days, small sprouts appear. Remove the cloth and let the sabzeh grow (increased exposure to the sun will increase the speed of its growth). You can grow several dishes in case they rot or go moldy which they often do. Some ladies have a reputation for having green hands and growing great Sabzeh. They might be asked to grow some for friends and relatives. If your hands are far from "green" on your first attempts, do not worry, most Iranian stores sell pre-grown Sabzeh and many people simply buy them.

Another fun tradition for the children is the painting of the eggs for Norooz. This is much like the Easter tradition of painting eggs and can be a great way to teach children about the significance of Haft Sin. The best time to do this is the day before Norooz. That way your eggs will be ready for the sofreh and they will last for the next 13 days of the New Year.

Sofreh Haft Sin - The Seven S's of the New Year

The Sofreh Haft Sin (Haft Seen) is the spread, which the family gathers around to celebrate the New Year. It is the focal point of the celebration and ensuing visits and as such Iranians take great care and pride in putting together a lavish and elaborate spread to signify all that they want in the new year. The word Haft means seven and Sin stands for the “S” in the alphabet. Sofreh means spread, the floor of which is usually a nice rich material or embroidered fabric. The spread contains the seven specific things that start with “s”. The sofreh is prepared a day or two before Norooz and placed either on the floor or on the table for about two weeks after Norooz. In addition to the seven items, you may place additional items on the sofreh that will signify renewal, happiness, wealth, good health or any thing that you desire for the New Year. You will find additional items that start with S and other items that represent life in our list. Remember that this celebration is one of hope, promise and good fortune, so have fun with it and share the joy with all your friends and family.
Other optional items: rose water (gol ab), various spices, tray of dry beans, wheat and grain products, various fruit baskets, flowers, vegetables, sweets, nuts and snacks are all welcome. Some families also add a Jaa Namaaz (prayer mat). You can also include a termeh, which is a traditional Persian silk or gold embroidered cloth, handed down from generations to symbolize family and tradition.


Deed-o Bazdeed - New Years Visits

The Sal Tahvil, and the eve of the New Year are spent at home with immediate family. After that the tradition of Deed-o Bazdeed starts. This expression means to visit (see) and to visit back or again signifying the next 13 days of the New Year, which bring visits to and from family, friends and neighbors. On the first day of these visits, the families gather at the house of the head of the family, usually the oldest person such as a grandfather or grandmother of the family. This order is kept then from oldest to youngest and serves as a way of paying respect to the family. During these visits, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, neighbors and distant relatives gather to celebrate and enjoy the reunion, which may not otherwise occur during the busy year. Iranian sweets, shirini, ajil, tea and various fruits, or entire meals are served at these functions. Children get presents called Eidi from the older relatives, which range from toys to cash. The visits continue going from grandparents to the aunts, uncles, family friends and so on. At the end of thirteen days, the families go on the wonderful and fun family outing called Seezah Bedar.


Sizdah Bedar - The Day 13 Outing

Seezdah Bedar is the last holiday of the long Norooz break and is a day filled with relaxation and fun outdoors. Seezdah means 13 and Bedar means away or out. Iranians consider 13 to be an unlucky number and so for this reason, they spend the 13th day of the New Year outside the home. Seezdah-Bedar is in essence a national picnic that is celebrated with everyone going to parks, hills and mountainsides to spend the day with nature, wishing the evil spirits away. This way one hopes to avoid any bad incidents that may occur.

Family members rise early in the morning and prepare for the day long picnic. Iranians take their picnics very seriously and pack all the necessary items, leaving maybe the refrigerators behind. Supplies may include sandwiches, traditional polos, drinks, sweets, snacks such as ajil, carpets or rugs, the samavar, a ghalyan (water-pipe), backgammon, chess, cards, balls and other games for the children. Usually areas filled with nature, greenery and streams are chosen to commemorate this cultural holiday. More importantly, the sabzeh (sprouted wheat or lentils) is brought from the sofreh Haft-Sin to be thrown in a flowing stream or creek. It is believed that the sabzeh, which has by this time turned a little yellow, symbolizes sickness and problems. Therefore, it is thrown and carried away by the stream. The day is spent playing games, going for long walks in the fields, eating, drinking and enjoying each other’s company. In addition, Seezdah Bedar is a big day of hope, and people who wish for things follow the tradition of tying grass together. For example if a young girl wishes to find a husband in the coming year she will tie grass and chant “Seezdah Bedar Sale degar, khune-ye shuhar”. This rhyme literally means, “Next seezdah bedar, I will be at my husband’s home”. There are various chants for people who wish to get a job or be healthy or wealthy and so on. At the end of this day, the haft sin may be cleared away and families return to work.

Safety recommendations after an earthquake at home

The Operations that should not be done:

- Control injured for first-aid.

- Control firing’s dangers If you smell gas close gas at main switches.

- Control the electrical supplies and building’s wiring affairs and turn off electrical fuse.

-Control the water’s pipes, if they were broken or water leaks, close water at main switches.

-Control sewage’s pipes, if they were broken, don’t use lavatory’s water.

- Control building based on destruction, if it seems dangerous, leave there.

-Don’t use elevator If it is possible.

-Wear safe shoe and clothes after an intensive earthquake.

- Glass’s pieces may be thrown around .

-Use portable and automobile radio for receiving the latest information.

-Open the closed doors, open the cabinets cautiously and be careful of falling of the objects.

-Reply positively to request of police and fire station, the Red Crescent and also the rest of organs.

- You should have sincere cooperation with rescue workers.

-Be confident from the healthy of your family and help them in necessary time with observing safety points.

Outside the building

-Take shelter away from the building’s balcony, tress, broken walls and objects that might fall on you, also shops and windows.


-Get away from tall buildings, deck bridges and high voltage cables also near street light poles.


-In narrow streets and alleys, sit against an outside wall of a single-story building and put your hands on your head and neck.




Inside automobile:

During an earthquake in a moving vehicle pull over to the right side of the street at safe place and remain there until shaking is over. Be sure that your safe place is away from trees and under pedestrian bridges and crossover, the street light poles and high voltage cables and tall building. Stay at your authomobile and in the mood of sitting, lean your head over your knees and cover your head with your hands. The authomobile’s radio should be turned on for gaining the latest emergency information, and stay at your authomobile until the earthquake stops during an earthquake.


In the shop:

If you are in the shop, don’t rush toward exits, sit in safe place away from the objects that might fall on you and cover your head with your hands. Don’t take shelter under the shop facades or near shop windows.


In Cinema:

During an earthquake in public places, such as cinema, theater, sport saloon, crowd’s rushing toward exits is dangerous. So find a place for sheltering. Otherwise, remain on your chair, lean your head over your knees and cover it with your hands.
