A full-grown mountain lion was sighted Thursday evening on a rooftop in south Palo Alto, in the 800 block of Rorke Way, police reported today (Friday).

Sgt. Dan Ryan said a 45-year-old man heard footsteps on the roof of a neighbor's house and saw the large cat, which jumped off the roof into the back yard.

Leo Alley, 22, spins Lyn Berry-Shiva, 58, across the dance floor at the National Single Cougars Conference at the Dinah's Garden Hotel in Palo Alto Friday. The event brought Cougars (women 40 and older) and cubs (younger men) together for a night of socializing and for some a chance to find a partner.

Cubs crash cougar convention
August 31, 2009, 10:27 PM By Christopher Leydig

“Oh my God! We’re leaving,” shrieked a befuddled Cheryl to her Russian compatriot. “Ira, you know where we are? Do you know what kind of party this is? I thought this was a regular convention, I had no idea!”

Apparently Cheryl, a native Russian and San Ramon resident — clad in a black spaghetti-string top, playfully striped skirt and pointy three-inch pumps — did not get the memo. She was attending America’s premiere National Single Cougars Convention, a ball where older eligible women were supposed to be seeking the company of men; men much younger than traditional family mores might deem acceptable.

ZAP Newsletter

, , , ...

NOTE: I just updated one of the links in the message, this is actually about a year old.

I've been a very busy busy boy, getting up to speed with two versions of Drupal (5.7 & 6.2) at ZapWorld, and moving to new digs in Santa Rosa. I redid most of the front page at zapworld.com (among many other things), but I just finished the April (May?) newsletter, which allowed me to indulge my more (but not most) creative side. I did pretty much everything in a text editor (for those CSS purists, it should be noted that few, if any, email clients display divs correctly, so I had to do my layout with tables), but I also did the two prominant banners, for the header (pictured below, with a link to the full page) and the Zapino, an electric scooter modeled on the ever-stylish Vespa. For the header banner, I even used one of the photos I took last summer in Glen Ellen (as one or two of my dedicated reader will surely recall...).

Internet Access

, , ,

I don't have internet access where I live, and the city of San Francisco is well behind most third world countries when it comes to public access, so0 one is forced to make do with what's available.

I'm kind of partial to this one. Funny thing, though: I was packing my camera away after taking numerous photos, and was thinking of where I wanted to take photos next, when this Magnolia Tree snuck up on me & bit me in the rear! (I almost bumped my head on this very branch when I stood up)

(don't forget to zoom)

North Bay Ruby User's Group (MBRUG) meetup at O'Reilly Publishers Headquarters in Sebastopol, CA

, , , ...

As I mentioned in my last post, I've gotten pretty busy the last few days (alternating with bouts of huge depression).

Thursday night, I attended a meetup of the North Bay Ruby Users Group, which is a group of people working with, developing, experimenting-- or just plain learning-- Ruby on Rails, which is an up-and-coming web application development framework, using Ruby as the programming language, and Rails as the framework (Rails can apparently also be used with other programming "languages" like AJAX). I was having trouble getting my Rails Server to run on my laptop, and I received hands-on assistance in working out the bugs. Now I have to learn how to use the framework to develop web applications.

I'm just getting started in this endeavor.

Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison getting makeover

, , , ...

Bushra Juhi, Associated Press
Friday, September 5, 2008
(09-05) 04:00 PDT Baghdad --

Hosted by Tyra Banks

The notorious Abu Ghraib prison is getting a face-lift: work to reopen the facility and construct a museum documenting Saddam Hussein's crimes - but not the abuses committed there by U.S. guards.

The sprawling complex, which has not held prisoners since 2006, will be refurbished with the goal of taking new inmates in about a year, the government said Thursday.

Also, a section of the 280-acre site just west of Baghdad will be converted into the museum featuring execution chamber exhibits and other displays of torture tools used by Hussein's regime - including an iron chain used to tie prisoners together.

But Iraq's predominantly Shiite government has no plans to document the U.S. military abuse scandal that erupted in 2004 with the publication of photographs that shocked the world: grinning U.S. soldiers mistreating Iraqi prisoners, some naked, being held on leashes or in painful and sexually humiliating positions.

Iraq's deputy justice minister [and Bush Administration lackey], Busho Ibrahim, said American brutality was "nothing" compared to the violence and atrocities of Hussein and his Sunni-dominated Baath Party.

Message from Deep Purgatory

, , , ...

Although my life is currently in an excruciating place in Limbo, the surroundings are scenic (I believe this premise has been used in comedy sketches in the past).

I am currently staying in the Inner Sunset District of San Francisco, two blocks & around the corner from the offices of Craigslist

People in San Francisco are very environmentally-conscious, and insist upon placing their garbage somewhere in the vicinity of designated trash receptacles.

Today was the first Tuesday of the month, which meant it was free day at the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. Free, that is, except for the featured exhibit, in this case glasswork by some artist named Chihuly (who I've never heard of. so I'm a Philistine...). In this case, I was on the viewing platform on the top of the tower, when a woman realized she had an urgent appointment and was unable to use her ticket to the featured exhibit, so she gave it to me (pictures are on the way).

Here is a picture of the new De Young Museum:

Apparently the tower was designed to suggest a Mayan pyramid. Careful what time you head up to the tower: I understand they arbitrarily select a visiter from the crowd for Human Sacrifice. Probably just people without tickets-- I was probably safe after I got the ticket.

I also have another new album that I'm working on, which is comprised of photos from various places around San Francisco. Keep tuning in-- I'll be adding more as I go.

Wallpaper!

, , , ...

I just resized a few of my favorite photos for use as wallpaper. Feel free to pillage! There are two sizes for each photo: photos in the left column are sized 1320 x 990 pixels, for those of you with really BIG screens, and on the right, photos are sized 1200 x 900 for those of us with normal screens. p:

Just one example of the FINE ARTISTRY you'll find on this page:

I'll be adding more as I get around to resizing things. Stay tuned for more adventures!
