worthless Mass Media, media, information theory, Wordpress
...
In the next few months, I'm not going to have very much time online, so I'm going to try to put more time into what I consider my main area of expertise (OK, study?): media and information theory (with an emphasis on disinformation) on my noirish alter-ago Max LaCosse's blog,
Media Vulture (http://mediavulture.wordpress.com).
It's hosted on wordpress.com, but I aquired the domain mediavulture.com, and plan to migrate it over to my own host when I get the chance.

Palo Alto Online Staff
A full-grown mountain lion was sighted Thursday evening on a rooftop in south Palo Alto, in the 800 block of Rorke Way, police reported today (Friday).
Sgt. Dan Ryan said a 45-year-old man heard footsteps on the roof of a neighbor's house and saw the large cat, which jumped off the roof into the back yard.

Leo Alley, 22, spins Lyn Berry-Shiva, 58, across the dance floor at the National Single Cougars Conference at the Dinah's Garden Hotel in Palo Alto Friday. The event brought Cougars (women 40 and older) and cubs (younger men) together for a night of socializing and for some a chance to find a partner.
Cubs crash cougar conventionAugust 31, 2009, 10:27 PM By Christopher Leydig
“Oh my God! We’re leaving,” shrieked a befuddled Cheryl to her Russian compatriot. “Ira, you know where we are? Do you know what kind of party this is? I thought this was a regular convention, I had no idea!”
Apparently Cheryl, a native Russian and San Ramon resident — clad in a black spaghetti-string top, playfully striped skirt and pointy three-inch pumps — did not get the memo. She was attending America’s premiere National Single Cougars Convention, a ball where older eligible women were supposed to be seeking the company of men; men much younger than traditional family mores might deem acceptable.

missed the punch line, worthless Mass Media, chimpanzee mauling, racist drivel
...

AP - NEW YORK – A New York Post cartoon that some have interpreted as comparing President Barack Obama to a violent chimpanzee gunned down by police drew outrage Wednesday from civil rights leaders and elected officials who said it echoed racist stereotypes of blacks as monkeys.
The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows two police officers, one with a smoking gun, standing over the body of a bullet-riddled chimp. The caption reads: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."
The cartoon refers to a chimpanzee named Travis who was killed Monday by police in Stamford, Conn., after it mauled a friend of its owner.
Some critics called the cartoon racist and said it trivialized a tragedy in which a woman was disfigured and a chimpanzee killed. Others said the cartoon suggests that Obama should be assassinated. Many urged a boycott of the Post and the companies that advertise in it.
"How could the Post let this cartoon pass as satire?" said Barbara Ciara, president of the National Association of Black Journalists. "To compare the nation's first African-American commander in chief to a dead chimpanzee is nothing short of racist drivel."

The O'Reilly Factor, experts, dumbing down, worthless Mass Media
...
Now I know how they're able to get through an hour-long news-yelling show without uttering a single, collective, verifiable
fact:
Meet the make-believe strategists of TVJane Fleming Kleeb went on “The O’Reilly Factor” two weeks ago to talk about global warming, a topic on which, by her own admission, she’s hardly an expert. So who, then, is Jane Fleming Kleeb? Well, according to the Chyron that flashed across the screen after Bill O’Reilly introduced her, she is a “Democratic strategist.” But she’s hardly that, either.
“The first time they called me a strategist,” Fleming Kleeb recalls, “I literally laughed on TV.”
She kept a straight face this time, however, because she has grown accustomed to the misbegotten label. It all started in 2006, when Fleming Kleeb, the deputy director of Young Voter PAC, was asked to appear on MSNBC and Fox to talk about young voters. She did well enough in those early forays that she was soon brought back on the air to discuss a wider range of political matters.
Among the things that the proliferation of TV cable news has wrought is slackened standards for what constitutes a political strategist. Now used as a catchall tag for a whole host of people with varied — and often peripheral — backgrounds in electoral politics, the term has all but lost its meaning.
As Fleming Kleeb tells it, this group of make-believe strategists has become something of a pundits club, with participants working together to compensate for each other’s experiential or informational deficiencies.
“There is a small group of us that rely on one another to help each other with talking points,” she says. “Then I have a small group of friends who make sure it’s on message with the Democratic talking points.”
“It truly is about availability,” says the cable news executive. “Everyone is always interested in having a wide spectrum of guests, whether that’s a woman or people of color, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that’s the reason. The principal reason is the amount of hours to fill.”

Stephen Colbert, George Orwell, worthless Mass Media, War on Terror
...
Didn't anybody actually
read that book? (everybody seems to
think they did)
So, leave it to the comedians to explain it to us
once again...
Some noteworthy quotes from this video:
Al Qaeda is losing? They're our key ally in never having to explain what out government is doing.
If suddenly Al Qaeda isn't so threatening, how will we justify limitless executive power?
And then comes the video of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, declaring Hezbollah is now the "A-Team of Terror". [And] they "make Al Qaeda look like a Minor League team."
Thank God (or Allah...
oosp...I almost typed "Gog" instead of "God"... Gog? Magog? Any of you Revelations
Apocalypse junkies out there?) we have a new Bogieman to live in perpetual fear of.
Watching that clip of Chertoff reminds me of that passage in Orwell's
1984, where the Propaganda Minister is lauding East Asia's assistance in battling the Evil that is Eurasia, and is interrupted by a guy handing him a sheet of paper, whereupon the Propaganda Minister resumes railing against-- not Eurasia this time, but the Evil Empire of
East Asia, and without missing a beat commends the valient efforts of our allies in
Eurasia.

John Hagee, John McCain, anti-semitism, video
...
And people are worried about Obama's history with Reverend Wright? And, why isn't the allegedly Liberal Mass Media™ following this story, like they did with Obama & Wright?
--by Sam SteinJohn Hagee, the controversial evangelical leader and endorser of Sen. John McCain, argued in a late 1990s sermon that the Nazis had operated on God's behalf to chase the Jews from Europe and shepherd them to Palestine. According to the Reverend,
Adolph Hitler was a "hunter," sent by God, who was tasked with expediting God's will of having the Jews re-establish a state of Israel.
Going in and out of biblical verse, Hagee preached: "'And they the hunters should hunt them,' that will be the Jews. 'From every mountain and from every hill and from out of the holes of the rocks.' If that doesn't describe what Hitler did in the holocaust you can't see that."
"Then god sent a hunter. A hunter is someone with a gun and he forces you. Hitler was a hunter. And the Bible says -- Jeremiah writing -- 'They shall hunt them from every mountain and from every hill and from the holes of the rocks,' meaning there's no place to hide. And that might be offensive to some people but don't let your heart be offended. I didn't write it, Jeremiah wrote it. It was the truth and it is the truth. How did it happen? Because God allowed it to happen. Why did it happen? Because God said my top priority for the Jewish people is to get them to come back to the land of Israel."
[McCain has] admitted that seeking out Hagee's endorsement was a mistake, but still declared himself "glad to have" it.
A spokesman for Hagee confirmed the authenticity of the remark, which can be found at around the 1:08 mark of his sermon "Battle For Jerusalem."

So anyway... I'm at Lucky Supermarket, picking up a prescription at the pharmacy (a story in itself, involving the reasons why pharmacists should refrain from "snacking" on the job...)-- when I see
THIS:
on the magazine aisle. My first thought is this: obviously someone has determined that there is a significant market for this sort of publication (and not for such
fringe periodicals such as
Discover,
Smithsonian, and
National Geographic).
I figure this would be an amusing "fluff piece" for my blog, and I look for a cover shot on the internet, where
I come across this website, with the following publications available for perusal by fitness pervs of discriminating palattes:
