Bicycles All Over

,

City living is troublesome sometimes.

Don't take me wrong, I like the city a lot. I like the hustle and bustle, the light and the traffic, the art and culture and all the possibilities coming with the territory.

But there are drawbacks!

Traffic is one of the major drawbacks. Jams, noise and pollution. Everybody knows that - and every city dweller is aware of that.

But my city presents a problem not known to every city. Parking - and not only the parking of cars. In fact I think the parking of bicycles makes more inconvenience to the city dwellers than most other things.
Bicycles tend to be everywhere - and mainly where they are not supposed to be. In front of Central Station, in narrow residential streets and in some squares they occupy almost all available space on sidewalks. The result is, that mothers with prams, wheel chair users and blind people find it very hard to make their way through town. Sometimes dangerous situations occur when ordinary pedestrians are forced to walk on the actual road in order to pass the heaps of bikes piled up on the sidewalk.

To cope with the problem, City Hall has made parking buildings for bicycles and other dedicated spaces for them. But in vain - it seems like the better the parking conditions are, the more people go by bicycle and the unauthorized parking is still the same.

The latest attempt to cope with the problem is bicycle parking in layers - as shown on the below photo.

It looks good - for the time being. I anticipate though, that in a few weeks when everybody knows about this system, the piling up of bicycles will be just as chaotic here as in so many other places in my city.

Seems like a hard case to solve. Reminds me of the problem with congested roads. The more motorways you build, the more cars will use them and make new jams just weeks after opening the new road.

It looks like some parking lots I saw in Japan.
Nice photo, though

Stardancer 12. August 2009, 20:32

I think that's the first time I've ever seen a bicycle parking lot in my life, Allan. Besides, of course, the obligatory "pipe rack" that is usually in the schoolyard. It would be so cool if parking lots such as that were needed in the U.S.

:D

Nice shot.

There is something similar in China, but i think not in layers.

Excellent picture!

San 12. August 2009, 20:47

It's similar in China, and they attendants that watch your bike too. (for a very very small fee)

I wish we could see that in Vancouver! Too many cars here.

scott cumming 12. August 2009, 21:05

i ride a bike around here but it can be a little scary. the cars are very mean. you seem to have about a thousand more bike riders than we have in los angeles.

Allan 12. August 2009, 21:21

Thank you, guys.

I think that Denmark and The Netherlands
are the two most bicycling countries in Europe. Both countries are relatively flat and have therefore developed a sort of bicycling culture.
It generally works fine because many streets and roads have dedicated bicycle lanes here.

I commute by bike daily. Lots of people do that - men in suits and girls on their way to school alike. There are also a lot of commuters combining different means of transportation, like riding the bike to the train station and take the train the rest of the way. Hence the thousand bicycles piling up just outside Central Station.

Angeliki 12. August 2009, 22:11

not many bikes in NYC, delivering pizza is mostly what you see... way too dangerous for a bike :frown:

Edward Piercy 12. August 2009, 22:56

Well I'd say the answer to that problem might be a lot more rain. So perhaps the fix for Aarhus might be a lot more Global Warming which creates more rain.

(I'm sorry, I just didn't know what to say about the whole thing. But it is a very interesting issue. Also like the BW interpretation.)

Shaunak De 13. August 2009, 04:33

Not too many bikes in Mumbai either. The roads are too crowded to ride.

Great photo.

studio41 13. August 2009, 07:16

you are back from North Korea already! that was a short visit.

this is a great picture, Allan! don't people find their bikes being stolen all of the time? I'm assuming that if they just 'pile them up' everywhere, they don't lock them up?

studio41 13. August 2009, 07:22

by the way, this was a great picture I found yesterday, I imagine you will like it as much as I did? http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=10419&_DARGS=/global/en/corp/findpotd.jhtml&pq-locale=en_US&_requestid=4853

enjoy!

Allan 13. August 2009, 08:10

All these places too crowded for bikes. Ladies and gentlemen, if you all go by bike, there will be enough space

People normally lock up their bikes, but there's really not much reason to steal a bike here; there are free bikes everywhere. You use them like a supermarket cart, put a coin in a slot to release the bike from the rack, when you're finished with it, find a bike rack some other place in town and attach the bike there and get your coin back.

Besides, Jill - your link shows me no picture!

Ana 13. August 2009, 09:46

I thought the same, Allan. Then, when you go to the site Jill sent to you and click this:
Return to the current Picture of the Day
And a nice picture will show up!

Allan 13. August 2009, 09:47

Okay, thanks

Indeed one cool photo. Plenty of action, yet simple.

PainterWoman 13. August 2009, 12:38

An Asian country I visited has a ton of bike riders too. Small motor bikes as well. In fact, there are more of those two things than cars. There, the bike riders ride in the street along with the motor bikes and cars. Several times I took a taxi ride and I can't tell you how many times I held my breath. The car drivers and motor bike riders honk constantly inches away from whoever is in front of them. It seemed very chaotic to me. Everyone honking and weaving in and out of traffic. And nevermind the pedestrian.

studio41 14. August 2009, 00:56

this has happened more than once as I've tried to post the link... if you go to the site of the link, press "PICTURE OF THE DAY" then "VIEW PICTURE OF THE MONTH" for August 2009, it is number 10 or second row, last picture... it looks so painted, artistic... worth the view

studio41 14. August 2009, 00:59

also, Allan, if I may... you ought to share the picture of yours, red bike, if memory serves... in the garage? I love that one! it is another of my fave photos: http://ricewood.zenfolio.com/p415897086/h3e26b97e#h3e26b97e

53north 15. August 2009, 18:13

I've cycled all my life. There were actually 4 bikes outside the supermarkt today.. But still 80 needless cars for the fatties.

Allan 15. August 2009, 19:43

Jill, the one in reds and yellows? And about my red bike - now you shared it for me, didn't you?

53, don't you think a car is nice for a rainy day?

53north 16. August 2009, 01:17

Well, no. I live in the Town centre and can always nip out inbetween showers.
A car is nice for touring or visiting. I'd hire a van to see Scotland, or visit relatives, or tour the UK.
The traffic is too thick to putz about commuting.

studio41 16. August 2009, 07:15

I dared to. I knew it wouldn't matter if you got after me, afterall there is an ocean to swim, by the time you got here, you'd have forgotten why you came!

studio41 16. August 2009, 07:15

It is a great picture, isn't it?

Allan 16. August 2009, 08:20

It's a fantastic picture! Very explosive, yet controlled

Full moon?

I don't understand.

But I'll look it up on Wikipedia.

Allan 18. August 2009, 06:51

I think I understand. Also the rocket backpacks.

53north 18. August 2009, 09:13

It'll be under werewolves, Edward.
=o}

Edward Piercy 18. August 2009, 13:06

Or perhaps "F***ing Werewolves."
