My message in a bottle

A Flashback?

, ,

Something astounding happened today.

I was checking out some old movies on Youtube from the hippie days in Denmark. Legendary songs and stuff - and then I found the below legendary footage. I've never seen it before, but the music became legendary later. Almost every Danish person will recognize the tune, I am sure.

But suddenly, watching this, I noticed a boy listening to the music - and it flashed through my mind: Allan, this is you!

The clip is from 1971, and I was eleven at the time. The video is shot in the town of Svendborg on Funen in Denmark, and I do remember being there with my parents around that time. We were exploring the countryside, but decided to drive into town in order to find a restaurant. As we arrived at the city center, we noticed that music were being played near a church, as far as I remember. We stood there listening for a while, and after 15 minutes or so, we went on, found a restaurant and had dinner.

I am almost sure it's my humble self standing at 5:33. The glasses, the hair, the shape of the nose, the ears - everything fits.

I don't remember what exact music was played, though.

If this is true, I have been witnessing the birth of a legendary song. Adds a new dimension to my life for sure.

this is also my kind of music...but I have recently come to know it...though orla has known it many years....the last year or so we have listened a lot, rather very much to skousen & Ingeman and talked about going to a concert if someone ariives nearby.....very strange and funny for you to see yourself there....

I remember this kind of music and I used to listen to a lot of it during my 'rebel-with-a-cause-days' back even before this specific year. It's a vicarious "thrill" when the sort of thing that you describe happens and you find yourself wittingly, or accidentally, part of something 'famous' happening and I can see from what you say the thrill is still there. How wonderful!

Oh I like this music very much. What a thrill to see yourself there!

At the time I didn't think much about it. I wasn't all that interested in that sort of music - and my parents didn't either, I can guarantee you that. My dad had an expression for it: "More or less organized noise" he'd call it.

I don't remember anything about a camera either. And judging from my expression I was really thinking about something else.

But it's a thrill now. This discovery saved my day.

Thanks, guys, for commenting.

Not my kind of music but this one goes into ears easily. And finding yourself there... priceless

lokutus_prime 15. June 2009, 17:23

That's for sure

Wow. To find yourself in the middle of something like this....

That is so cool! What a find, Allan!

I was thrilled indeed. In fact, I still am.

That's great Allan. Love the shades!

Great song and video! Music from the 70' and 80' is my cup of tea :D

PainterWoman 15. June 2009, 21:45

Allan, for a second or two at the very beginning, I think that is you as well. You're at the bottom of the screen. I see just the top part of your head and glasses.

Lois 16. June 2009, 01:42

Wow!! What an amazing discovery Allan!! I would be thrilled too!

How amazing. I don't recognize it (not Danish p: ) but I do like the music. I might be a hippie at heart.

The angle of shot showing you in front of the wall and the drummer to the side and back is interesting to look at. I could be wrong not knowing the words but the impression I get from that shot is that it fits with the mood of the instrumental music. A little bit separate from things but still a part of that greater whole of all the different musicians and the collaborative effort of the song. I don't know, maybe I'm too poetic by nature and see things that way.

anywho, what a supercool find for you to make.

Allan 18. June 2009, 06:50

Thanks Muse, for stopping by.

You aren't that far away from the meaning of the song. I'd even say close.

The song is kind of a generational song. A hippie song. A song saying, that from where we stand, we can see the whole thing in each and all directions. That everything moves around, floats, and we can choose and participate - it's about choice. The direction can be chosen; it's not fixed.

Sure, I find it "supercool" too.
