My message in a bottle

Afraid of Flying?

Man, that was close!

This weekend - Saturday I think - an amateur photographer and plane-spotter was standing just outside an airport in Hamburg, Germany filming incoming planes.

There was a heavy crosswind at the place and the plane therefore had to compensate by landing with a difficult angle to the runway. And it was about as close as could be to a major catastrophe - without actually becoming one.

The plane-spotter uploaded the footage for all to see - and had it not been for that, we wouldn't have heard of it.

This makes me nervous. I will definitely have this in mind next time I'm flying anywhere.

Good grief.

Watch the footage here, if you dare.

That's pretty awesome. I'm surprised the pilot elected to take off again after scraping his wing like that. I'd have thought one landing attempt was enough, and stayed on the ground!

Perhaps he ran out of runway...

I'm sure most pilots are consciencious and this incident is not likely the normal. However, I can certainly see it your way - ever since I watched a commercial pilot (through the observation window), drinking out of a paper bag while sitting in the pilot's seat.

Yikes! When it made that rapid drop towards the runway, I couldn't see how it was going to make it. A very close call. I wonder what the passengers were thinking?

Afraid of Flying?

I wasn't 'til I watched the video. Thank goodness it wasn't a crash.

I'm sure though that the incident will be investigated and hopefully it will prevent it happening again.

Unbelievable. That's the guy I want flying the plane I'm on in a crosswind.

Right!

Sometimes people on a plane applaud when the plane touches ground in the good old ordinary way.

Maybe people should applaud in situations like this instead?

Amazing!

The pilot must have had nerves of steel, that could have end really bad.

Wow! Good thing the pilot was skilled!

Yay, that was a spectacular landing. The pilot will be one of the best, I guess. up

Seems to be JUST A TAD bit of wind sheer at work there.

As the pilots say, "any landing you walk away from is a good one."

And they really do say that. Which should tell you something right there.

Latest:

According to a Danish newspaper, the plane was landed by a trainee co-pilot. The "real" pilot took over at the point where the wing of the plane touched the ground - after which he went around and landed the plane safely by himself.
