Scandinavian Nights

, ,

It's so hard to go to bed early these days.

First of all, it's summer - and summer came early this year. Days are sunny and my head feels dizzy when I get home after work from all the outdoor living and the massive bombardment of light and colours my senses must endure.

Secondly, Nights of Light are here. Meaning that the sky is illuminated with sunshine all night, even though the sun has disappeared under the horizon. It's travelling for a few hours just out of sight before it rises again - and we can start all over.

Evenings in the garden with white wine and talking turn into nights - and we hardly notice it. Nights of Light deprive us from our sleep.

The above photo is taken just after midnight standing in front of my house, overlooking the street, a bit of my 'hood and the Scandinavian midnight sky.

Note to self: Tomorrow I really need to crash before midnight.

Nothing's New Under The SunCalling for a just war?

Amazing, I have never seen it before. I know about it but have never been so far north during spring and summer. Here, it gets dark in 7:45 p.m. and now is a pitch black. At least I can sleep :D

 Lovely photo, and that northern sky light is something else. Nothing that here in the Midwest of the US where we are on the same latitude as the south of Spain.

Thanks, all. By the way, should anyone wonder about the full moon, it's a photo from yesteryear.

Beautiful picture and wonderful to hear about Scandinavian Nights. Although I can understand how difficult it would be to sleep, it certainly makes for a pretty sky!

The bright evening have thrown me completly. I keep looking at the clock in disbelief because it's still light out.

i think i would like that... short nights. i sleep six hours no matter what the sky is like. i am trying to imagine what that must be like.

Well Allan,
I can realte better than you know.
Where I sit, the sun dips below the horizon around midning and leaves a firework of colour.

But you are so right, the beautiful nights easily makes up for the lack of sleep.

Love the photo:up:

Thomas, of course I can't beat your bright night light

Scott. Doesn't that come with age? I mean, when I was twenty I could sleep 13 hours in a row - easily. Now I'm happy if I can sleep 7. Regardless of season.

Mick, that's my feelings exactly. Disbelief. Every year!

Beautiful...and fascinating. Thank you.

Spokane is just about the same longitude as Paris. Even though in many ways it feels "farther North" than that.

You've apparently got more snow in winters than they have in Paris, Edward!

You're welcome, Scott. This AI thing is very promising overall I think.

But WAY fewer cafes.

What about French kisses - d'ya have plenty of those?

French fries?

By ricewood, # 10. May 2008, 20:57:26

avatar
Ah, French fries, yes. But lately they've been giving way to the more conservative curly fries.

No kisses, alas. Not that I expect any.

By edwardpiercy, # 10. May 2008, 21:01:38

Last time I visited Paris, there was no French kissing either.

Though my sweetheart has the features of a typical 'irish las' - emerald eyes, generous curves and all - she kisses like a danish woman. She also cusses and swears like a danish woman - and there's no cussing like dansih cussing. Good thing, I'm a danish man, otherwise I'd be in trouble.

I hope you survived your crash.... Kilroy...

Astounding, from dusk to dawn with night not so in between, a compelling and beautiful example.

You do not have to Allan:) I love the Danish summer nights equally much and the same goes for your way of capturing it.
